I have pond action!

Near Lake Erie, NW, PA(Zone 5a)

Yesterday evening I was sitting out by the pond, taking some pictures. In the far corner I have a pot of waterlilies and the bluegills are making it their breeding spot. Here are some water action shots. (hope these show up good)

Just getting started

Lady, that is just too cool. Bet you can spend hours watching them.

I actually have a waterlily blooming. It's early this year. I think I have a photo I took a few weeks ago of the fish. Yep, here they are.

LadyG, That is so cute. LOL The tree frogs have been busy at my house there are tadpoles in the box pond and frog eggs, too. You wouldn't believe all the noise at night. You would think we had the only water for miles there are so many frogs here serenading. LOL

With the rains this year I even have pond action...and I don't have a pond! Frogs are croaking up a storm out back and I surprised one in front of the backdoor - scared the begeebe's out of me!

Bec, i had one hop on in the house with me one day while I was carrying groceries. I never caught him and never saw him again. Wish I could say the same about the mouse who did the same!

Thor would be more than happy to hunt & kill anything that comes in the house - I hardly see spiders anymore!

I haven't seen any frog eggs yet. I don't have the noisy tree frogs here very much, but I know there are some around. Also have not seen a toad around even with all my planting and weeding. Maybe the all headed south-east LOL

Ric saw a wood toad the other day wish we would have gotten a pic of it, they are really beautiful.

Actually it was a wood frog, not real common. The first time I found one I was cleaning up an old wood pile late in the fall. Needless to say , that got put off till the next spring so as to not disturb any of the little fellas that were already going to bed for the winter. Any excuse will do, to put off a dirty job. :-) LOL Ric

My frogs are all AWOL. Wish they would come back.

I haven't seen any of our frogs yet but they're out there because I'm hearing them singing for lady friends at night.

Holly, what's a wood frog?

Got this picture this morning, he sat there for the longest time with that piece of covering from a pine tree bud. Maybe he thought it was his crown.

Presenting prince charming !

Another little frog jumped away when I was taking these, but this guy wasn't bothered by me at all.

I'm ready for my closeup, Mrs. Demille!

Having no real pond, I had to make my own pond action. Kid and I went to a huge tropicals store in search of cheap goldfish. They also sell tadpoles!!!!!!!! Came home with four massive (for a tadpole LOL) tads. Bulfrogs, so they say. Compare the size to the six for a dollar goldfish.

So cute and squishy! Tiny tiny eyes. One slightly smaller, and spottier skin, hoping for two kinds of frog.
We installed them in an old galvanized wash pan which of course began to leak that night. So I moved to a large plastic tub. Then added a bubbler and filter. Two fish died, but the remainder seemed happier with the bubbler and alls been well for several weeks.
Back legs starting on a couple, and then this week one guy popped out in front! The eyes are getting much bigger.

Very good fun for the kids Sally. Nice biology lesson.

That is so neat. The kids will have a great time with them. When my kids were small we had a very old 15 gallon long shallow aquarium just right to set up a tadpole tank. I put aquarium rocks and some local stones in one end. I it was a bit like the edge of a pond with some deeper water at one end and solid ground at the other. We got ours from the creek and kept them till they could hop around. They were great fun even if I did have to keep them in the kitchen. LOL

Sally, They are good looking frog-lets. Question is who is having the most fun, you or the kids?
Froggie says Hi! He is but one of 4 big frogs, and then there are about 4 to 5 small frogs. PS they love the big juicy slugs I find underneath the flower pots.

LadyG, that is so cute. LOL
All my big frogs from last year are gone. They were here earlier this spring and then disappeared. I had tons of tadpoles and then I couldn't find any of those but some must have made it as I have several small frogs. Haven't gotten a good look at them yet, they are pretty quick when they hear me comming.

Holly, My frogs seem to be real hams for the camera.
I am surprised they have hung around this year with all the rain, I have had a lot of coming and going over the years.
I also don't know if the small ones were tadpoles in the pond or migrated here I have some creeks nearby so they travel a lot.

Seems funny with the recent dry weather but we found two small frogs (tree frog or peeper size) in the grass over the weekend, one at mom's and the other here, neither place has a pond in sight. I'm thinking they were getting desperate and went roaming to find water. Glad we're having this good soaking rain. I haven't seen a toad for ages.
Yes I am the main frog fan LOL but the 12 yr old boy is into them too.

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Talk about toads, I had to chase this big guy out of the house the other day. He was sitting on the patio steps and when I opened the door he hopped in and under a piece of furniture. LOL

Shenandoah Valley, VA

I was watering my roses a couple of weeks ago and there was a toad peeking out from a "cave" he'd made in the mulch. It was so cute.

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

More good soaking last night; maybe they'll be out and about. My son worked at a pizza place which had a big pond behind it in the woods.I was so glad it was no roach haven--the worst pest he had to deal with was frogs that would get in the back door.

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

I was going to start the pool filter this AM but I noticed quite a few egg masses floating about, I may have to get wet so I can transfer them to the ponds where some will survive and some will be live food. We have been running the pool so as to be eco friendly for a number of years. Very little chlorine and low copper levels have been very effective, it does require a little more filtration but the tree frogs thrive and the pets and deer drink it. Jr does notice if he swims on a chlorine day (stings his eyes) but otherwise I'm happy with it. If I find a reasonable source for a hydrous nickle compound I probably reduce the chlorine even further. Ric
