Wandasflowers & llilyfan go to Chicago!

(Sue) South Central, IA(Zone 5a)

The Chicago Botanic Garden is absolutely wonderful, and was a great place to hold a Lily Show!

We arrived around 8:45am and were greeted, Wanda got busy staging her stems for showing and I was put to work helping a first time shower groom her lilies for the show tables. Interesting!

Here we are with the Head Judge, Woody Imberman.

This show had quite a number of Artistic Design entries. The theme of the artistic division was "Our Natural Wonders" and each class was represented by a state park.

This is one area of the artistic design

One last picture before I head to work. Simply beautiful.

This is the 'Island of the Gods' supposedly you can not enter this garden of no paths until you have passed from this life. A strong wind will blow you away if you try or the turtle on who's back the garden grows will swim away from you. Wonder how they keep it mowed.......................

If I'd known about this show, I would have ditched my family for a couple hours and come to sneak a peek. Sorry to have missed it. Did you check out the bulb garden there? It's one of my favorite spots.

Lisbon, IA(Zone 5a)

Why do I want to read the header of this as "Wanda and Sue's Excellent Adventure!"
I bet you guys had a riot!! :) Please post more pictures later!

Western, WI(Zone 4a)

Looks like you had lots of eye candy. Imagine you enjoyed your selves tremendously.

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

No doubt they did. :) Tell us more!

(Sue) South Central, IA(Zone 5a)

Yep, we took in the bulb garden, it was amazing to see all those plants from bulbs and rhizomes growing in a great setting.

This group of pots featured 'Red Hot' and was great in the entryway.

Of course there is always the art and statues that are displayed... I actually could make sense of most of the works I saw!

I figured this one out all by myself! A copper crane.

No questions on this one either

Still not sure what this one is supposed to be...

I don't think this Robin liked having his bath interrupted ^_^

LOL That's a mad birdie!

(Sue) South Central, IA(Zone 5a)

DH just walked by and said 'Robin with attitude!'

Met several very nice people at the show, here is Sue with Wanda. Sue clerked for us and was a joyful and enthusiastic helper.

Here is the table of horticulture stems. It was a very small show. Wanda and I had expected a larger show since the asiatics were in full bloom in the area. Oh well, small was ok since we had to judge a fair portion of the show!

This is the little merchild I fell in love with in the lobby

looked like it was a nice start for some 'smart new judges"

Saint Bonifacius, MN(Zone 4a)

Wonder where they got all those wine bottles . . .

We don't have wine bottles. Ours are akevitt bottles. Never touch the stuff myself. No, mine would be šlivovic.

(Kidding, all of it.)

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

Awww.... I want the merbaby!

Divernon, IL(Zone 5b)

Hail the Judges!
Nice tour, thanks.

Western, WI(Zone 4a)

Sue, you have good taste as I like the mermaid too.

Maxine

(Sue) South Central, IA(Zone 5a)

Lefty, that's funny! The wine bottles were the first thing I noticed, my second thought was...well they won't leak like our stem holders do!

Maxine, I really made a fool of myself photographing the merbaby! I was sprawled out on the ledge of the reflecting pool trying to get the right angle.

We did go and visit Mr. Imberman's garden, it was quite .....ummmm....... interesting, yes interesting. Is it possible to have a very young garden in a very old garden? Anyway here is a picture of one small area of his garden.

Good taste indeed; I like the merchild also.

Saint Bonifacius, MN(Zone 4a)

it was quite ...ummmm... interesting, yes interesting.

I think that's what most would say about my place. LOL. But I am proud of it!

(Sue) South Central, IA(Zone 5a)

:-) ah lefty, I'll bet your garden isn't such a study of contrasts and then even i it is there is a lot to be said for interesting!

This was the awards table, it really does reflect the growing year we have all had.

Sue, what a nice picture. You captured every thing so perfect.
Lilies are spectacular as usual in a show.

Maxine

Maxine, thank you.

It was a great time and I learned alot. I'm thinking about heading that direction again next year. This society is in dire need of judges as two of the three have now retired because of age.

This is one of the few full sun areas I could find in the bulb garden, they have lilies tucked in everywhere.....

beautiful ,
love that red foliage plant , wonder what it is ?

Cedar Rapids, IA(Zone 5a)

Goodness, always late to the party these days. Sue has an incredible eye for the lilies. I'm working on mine...

My pics are at home--I'll try to get a few posted tonight. A little crazy here as I prepare for an "Open Lily & Daylily Garden" on Sunday. Why did I tell all those May Iris visitors that I would call them about this July Open Garden????

Sand Springs, OK(Zone 7a)

LOL.
you will enjoy it after its over

Cedar Rapids, IA(Zone 5a)

Well, I enjoyed the trip, but my head is still buzzing. I need to boil it all down & get my article written for our IRLS (Iowa Regional Lily Society )newsletter. Sue is the hard-working editor.

Soo...after agonizing over classifications, lily forms, & blooms for over 2 hours, Sue & I helped choose these winners for the head table. As student judges, that was not one of our duties, but almost all the entries belonged to the head judge & he couldn't comment on his own stems! I brought 4 stems with me that earned 3 blue ribbons, but no "Best of Class" awards.

We ducked out in the middle of the afternoon to tour the beautiful Chicago Botanic Garden wrapped around our building. Sue and I were fascinated by the layout of the paths & bridges to the garden islands.

Huge flows of flowers everywhere you went... Daylilies of course!

I liked the "garden cottages" they added for atmosphere...

Plants were well labeled for us to see and not a weed in sight due to 1200 hard-working volunteers!

I noticed THIS handsome statue--
