Summer Lilies 2008 #2

(Sue) South Central, IA(Zone 5a)

I think as we 'mature' in our lilium addiction we are drawn to the specie type more and more. In my mind I can see the entire north bed with waves and waves of sweet downfacing recurved lilies blooming throughout the season.

Love both Eurydice and Karen North.

In the meantime here is Jolie. This is the first bloom I've seen on mine in 2 years because the deer got to the buds before they ever opened.

The species type lilies work really well in a small space like mine, because they're vibrant but they don't overpower, and I love the way they seem to float and bob over the garden. I know a lot of people are into lilies for scent and rule out asiatics for lacking any, but both Eurydice and K. North have a delightful sweet scent. They don't perfume the whole garden, but definitely worth bending over for. Just realized I've got Angela North out there too, but I can't tell her apart from Eurydice.

By the way, Jolie is very jolie! Love the soft coloring.

Ripon, WI(Zone 4a)

wickerp, those Eurydice are lovely. How tall do they get? Do you have lots because they multiply fast or did you start with a lot? I wasn't aware they had a scent. Great bonus!

Thanks, Mag, I'm on my way to the website to check em out!

Chicago, IL(Zone 5b)

the Lily Garden says they're 4-5 ft. This is only my second year with them and they're still inconsistent height-wise. Just checking TLG website, I see that in a customer poll Eurydice was voted most fragrant early season bloomer. I have lots because I bought what for me is lots but for some here would be just a small drop in a big bucket. Had a few new little shoots this year and certainly hope they'll multiply. We'll see.

wp. May I add to the list of fragrant Asiatic, 'Arabian Red' is out of these world as far as fragrant!!!

Chicago, IL(Zone 5b)

Is Arabian Red an asiatic? It's a beauty, whatever.

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

Oooos, sorry it's an Oriental. BTW, what's the difference b/w the two? Please help me out so I will be able to communicate more comprehensive when come to liliums. Thanks.

Question for you, Moby,
Are OT's and Orienpets the same thing?

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

Yep. OT is the more accurate name, as 'orienpet' is slang by running the 2 words together.

Oh ~ and sometimes you'll see reference to OP which is short for orienpet. Is it right to abbreviate slang?? ;)

"OP" can mean "open pollinated" too, but you'll know by the context of the sentence.

Wonderful pics, everyone!

Maxine, are you entering in the lily show this weekend? There will be slim pickin's, Dianne says. You could be a shoe-in(sp?) Not a lot of flowers opening for members this year yet, including me. I have to work anyway.

Lilyfan, those are a particularly interesting form L. cernuum. Are they genetically identical, or do you get seed? I wouldn't mind some seed . . . . I am sure I could find something you'd like to trade for.

Greenwood, IN(Zone 5b)

Wow, great lilies everyone. I have a few more to go but most of mine are on their last legs. Love that "Eurydice" and "Karen North", Wickerparker, as well as your "Cernum", Ililyfan. The pendant lilies are really growing on me and until Magnolia gave me a "Eurydice" (thanks Tracey!) at the Roundup, I'd never really considered the pendant-looking lilies.

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

Hey, wait wait, my Casa Blancar hasn't open up yet. So us zone 7b aren't on our "last legs" yet with Lilies. lol. Hi Steve. Thank you, Moby, those info. provided are excellent!
Kim

Greenwood, IN(Zone 5b)

OK, Kim you are right we still have a FEW left - and I noticed some unopened buds, so not sure what they'll turn out to be. I do have several Conca d'Or lilies blooming that look surprisingly good, my Rococos are still going strong, and I have some white unnamed Orientals in bloom that I am not sure of the variety but they look like small Casablancas and have a very strong fragrance. But my Crape Myrtles are finally starting to bloom! Oh and I still have some daylilies....I am looking forward to your Casablanca! It was wonderful laet year, I remember you posting about it.....

Oh I still have a few Silk Roads - and my phlox are still blooming! Going into that dreaded July though...not much will be blooming then except Roses of Sharon, Crape Myrtles, and maybe a few daylilies.

Greenwood, IN(Zone 5b)

Thanks you guys :-) I am afraid you're all putting me to shame now though! What an awesome selection Ticker and Ililyfan, you have. YOu have gotten me salivating aafter some new varieties I have not experienced. And magnolia, and Moby, and Twin Lakes, and jmorth, and lincolnitess - LOL. Giving me inspiration on my orders. I must have several of them! Buggy here I come - well when she re-opens anyway!

Kim, wonderful to have a fellow southern lily gardener here. I am looking forward to your summer-long blooms and maybe you can give me some ideas and gardening inspiration for our zone in a similar climate!

Steve, the picture you posted of one of your flower beds is out standing!
You have very good taste in putting together what looks good.
Hope I made my self clear on that last statement.

Is that Conca D Ora in the background?

Maxine

OC, CA & Twin Lakes , IA(Zone 4b)

Beautiful garden layout, Steve.

Western, WI(Zone 4a)

Lefty, nope! Too much going on here. Wondering why I retired as I am busier now than when we farmed.

Maxine

Greenwood, IN(Zone 5b)

Why thanks Arlene and Maxine! Yes Maxine, they are - on both sides of the drive area - good eye! There's some Phlox in there too but kind of hard to see in the picture in the lighting.

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

Yiles, looks like we could use a new thread already, so come on over and bring your lilies.

hello lily fanatics. I cannot even pick which one I like best from all the wonderful postings. All I can say is you've expanded my wish list something fierce.
