That Chance Beauty is stunning! Isn't it a pseudata? (pseudacorus X laevigata). If so, I am growing it from seed and it is just starting to bud. Don't know if it will come true however.
The beardless show has begun part 3
I think I had it wrong and it is a pseudo x ensata. So that would be a pseudata.
ahhh..well I may be lucky to have a similar one from the seeds I sowed...I hope so! I'll post when it blooms...in late July at this rate.
Well, now I am waiting with you!! Can't wait to see all your hybridizing efforts in bloom!!
That's a spuria, right? My graminea is sick-all the foliage is turning yellow and brown but I almost lost it once before and it came back. It was wonderful last year.
Chance Beauty is a pseudata, (pseudacorus X ensata), and like almost all those wide diploid crosses is supposed to be sterile.
Lovely picture of it, Boojum!
wow
bloom this late is like christmas in july even jap . are all over by last of May In my end of the planet
Normally they bloom in early June but we are about 3-4 WEEKS behind with iris both bearded and beardless
D
And we're ahead on the East coast.
Are you sure? I'm still waiting!
I was in Maryland and Anita had bloom BEFORE Lebanon, OR and she is usually about 2-3 weeks behind us...strange year.

Mine are just on time here.
I was way ahead on the sibs, and about a week ahead so far on the JIs.
i tectotiun (sp sucks )
that is glorious
it need to be introduced
yes i am spelling challenged today
Love that pseudata! I need to groe more JI...I have mostly Sibs and only a couple of JI....they are not easy to find in Canada compared to Sibs.
My Prarie Twilight opened today also, but your picture is better, Boojum (of course).
I love that seedling.
These Eye Shadow irises are so exciting. They are actually a new strain of irises developed in 'our time'. The first one was intro'd in 2004.
The strain was developed by Mr. Hiroshi Shimizu of Japan, who began working on them in 1993. The flowers all have a dark halo around the signal, which bleeds into the falls, making them look like eyelashes.
Shimizu first grew Iris pseudacorus from seed obtained from the British Iris Society, and SIGNA. He mixed the pollen from several Japanese iris cultivars and placed it on 100 different pseudacorus clones. From all the seedlings he selected one, and named it Gubijin. (Named after a Chinese princess who tragically died in B.C.202, the Chinese tale tells how a yellow flower bloomed on her grave). Gubijin proved to be a very fertile pod parent, readily setting seed when crossed with Japanese iris.
Shimizu has made over 1000 successfull crosses so far, with 1000 different JIs. He has only introduced less than 10 so far, but will be introducing many more.
The Eye Shadow strain of iris is exciting as it gets it's vigorous traits from the pseudacorus parent. The irises are tall, and grow extremely quickly. They are very easy to grow. They are not invasive as pseudacorus are. They are getting the colors and many of the traits from the JI parents, and soon to come will be doubles and deeper JI colors.
Currently there are only a few for sale. They began selling in the US in 2005, and Ensata Gardens sold the first one Kinshikou for 75.00. It is now for sale for 40.00.

Jill Copeland from MI hybridizes them as well. She will introduce through Ensata.
Draycott Iris has some as well 40.00 to 20.00.

Spuria Adriatic Blue is fantastic! I've never seen Spuria for sale in Canada....we seem to have a decided lack of iris diversity available here, except for bearded types which I don't bother with.
