The beardless show has begun part 3

Iris hookeri x ensata from seed. Well that's how the seed was labelled. Thanks to more educated DG members than myself, its seems far more likely to be Iris versicolor.

That is a really interesting cross.

Sand Springs, OK(Zone 7a)

cool cross and nice looking flower

Saint Bonifacius, MN(Zone 4a)

Forgot to say it wasn't my own cross. I received seed through SIGNA, the Species Iris Group.

St. John's, NL(Zone 5b)

Hmmm...I have the same cross but it is barely budding yet. The flower looks decidedly like a versicolor. I don't see much ensata. I get the impression the seed may have been mislabelled.

Shelburne Falls, MA(Zone 5a)

Nice one!! Can't remember if I posted bullyana. I got the seeds from Todd Boland.

Kathy, the bulleyana looks like siberica species I have...speaking of mislabelled, seems I sent YOU mislabelled seeds! I'll collect and re-send the real McCoy. Sorry about that.

Shelburne Falls, MA(Zone 5a)

Oh! Fun!

Hannibal, NY(Zone 6a)

Those seeds are fun. I got quite a few from SIGNA this year, and they have germinated. I can't wait to see them bloom.

Shelburne Falls, MA(Zone 5a)

Todd, I think the first pic is prismatica and the second is the one you sent. Is it still siberica?

Deer River, MN(Zone 3b)

I tend to agree with Todd that the first pic on this thread looks like versicolor to me.

kathy, here's a pic of bullyana from last summer. NONE of yours are a match. I will endevour to do better with this years seed.

I have a bunch of SIGNA widecrosses just starting to bud from seeds sown last year...biversata, reensata, pseudata....should be great fun to see what variations I get!...might all end up being versicolors!

Rick, after doing some searching, your hookeri X ensata looks like versicolor 'Mint Fresh'.

Saint Bonifacius, MN(Zone 4a)

Thanks Todd. I'll edit my first entry to some effect. The flower form is fantastic, but the color is rather washed out, IMO.

Shelburne Falls, MA(Zone 5a)

Oh wow, Todd. No wonder I wanted it!

Hannibal, NY(Zone 6a)

Ricks picture does look like versicolor Mint Fresh. And the seeds for Mint Fresh were available from the SIGNA sale. I don't see any ensata in it.

St. John's, NL(Zone 5b)

I got Mint Fresh seed as well...maybe when they flower they will be hookeri X ensata!

Hannibal, NY(Zone 6a)

I'd really like to see that cross, and I'd love to see the pseudatas. Do you know what the cross for the pseudatas was, which pseud and which ensata? I hope to be able to do some pseudatas next year, I have the pod parent Shimizu uses for the Eye Shadow irises, and lots of ensatas to cross it with.

South Hamilton, MA

Mint Fresh is straight versicolor. When Bee Warburton introduced it people were not crossing the different species as no awards to push that type were available. MF might even be collected, I know Cat Mousum was--she found it while driving to Maine.

That Prarie Glory is gorgeous, Pirl! I do love the tall ones.

Willamette Valley, OR(Zone 8a)

Oh, I like that Prairie glory. How tall is it?

Shelburne Falls, MA(Zone 5a)

Mine is 3.5-4'. I love it. Not blooming yet here.
My yellow spuria finally bloomed after 3 years!!

Amazing to have ensata open the same time as chrysographes...my chrysographes bloom a good month before the ensata. In fact, my ensata bloom after all the rest of the beardless have passed.

Beradless season is just starting here...this is ruthenica nana

Oh that's lovely, Todd!!
I have tried to grow chrystographes twice but it always dies. I want to grow Suavenens rubifloria but I don't know much about what conditions they want.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

I just measured it at 52".

Well this has been a very strange year in Oregon, we still have TB in full bloom and some are just now getting ready to bloom, destalking many that I would never do in a live time, like Kitty Kay...

This year we are about 3-4 behind our normal season and in digging the seedling, see that the roots are just now starting to set new...ahh the thrill of it.

We're right on target here. I depend on the JI show to start on 6/21 and it was just a few days early this year.

Lebanon, OR

NOt here, in 07 SDB started blooming 3-22 and this year they started 4-21 and never have I had as sDB blooming with TB...TB and Sibs were totally together and the Spuria started before and during JI, daylilies just now starting with 5 blooms out of 300+
Go figure.

Shelburne Falls, MA(Zone 5a)

Wow, pirl. Nice! My Prairie Twilight is my tallest.

Hannibal, NY(Zone 6a)

That is tall, Pirl. I need to get that one for sure. And such a nice setting with those alliums.

Shelburne Falls, MA(Zone 5a)

Well, I will not be disappointed with my brevicaulis or my fav JI (no name). There will be lots of blooms on those. I'm madly working on cutting the sib bloomstalks down so the JIs next to them look fabulous. I think I am a bit crazy. Now if I didn't take those revealing pics, I might be able to not care. This is the big excitement for me today even if it is way off track-a pure white cypripedium reginae!! First plant, first bloom. Can't help but share.

Lovely, Boojum. Is it a hardy orchid? Almost looks like a face with a big gaping smile.

Shelburne Falls, MA(Zone 5a)

It is hardy! I hope!! (My regular pink and white reginae has come back for years even after I moved it this year.)
