Are pinks a little scarce? Show us some pinks?

Jamaica Plain, MA(Zone 6a)

Here's Pink Kitten - an IB - and I have plenty to trade for IB's or dwarfs if anyone's interested.

APPLE BLOSSOM PINK from Hanks Iris Garden

Hallelujah! A grower (not hybridizer) sent me 9 of these little noIDs - her tags had gotten gone over winter and she could not remember what they were, but they were short, I wanted medians, and she said they were really cute. Your photo of Pink Kitten, Per, is a dead ringer - exactly! Pink Kitten was on her sales list the year before. I had it pegged as a shorter IB or a tall SDB, but more likely an IB because of form and bloomtime.

South Hamilton, MA

Pink Kitten is officially an IB.

Jamaica Plain, MA(Zone 6a)

Yes- Pink Kitten is definitely not a dwarf. Mine started out on the shorter end of IBs (maybe 5 or years ago), but lately it seems some have gotten a bit taller. I could be mistaken.

Raleigh, NC

this was Pink Kitten first year and potted. I thought it was a bit tall for SDB, but it was a bit short for IB too. i don't have any photos that are not fuzzy, but that is a dead ringer. right down to the soft pinkish orange and white beards and lavepink haft marks! I'm so pleased! It was just too cute not to have its name!

Jamaica Plain, MA(Zone 6a)

bonjon, glad I could help!

Interesting while IBs are supposed to have limited fertility (not always true) as a pod parent crossed with a tet pink MTB it has produced a seedling which is behind a great many MTBs produced by Ken Fisher, a very active MTB hybridizer. Also it is cute.

Jamaica Plain, MA(Zone 6a)

I'd call it elegant. Are you saying that Fisher used Pink Kitten as a parent in many of his hybrids? (sorry - not quite sure if that's what you were saying). If so, I can see why. I really don't care for a lot of the very large- flowered irises that seem shapeless and sloppy. I call them the dog-eared ones. I think the shape of the flower has at least as much or more to do with my appreciation of them as the colors/patterns do.

South Hamilton, MA

A Pink Kitten X Puppy Love seedling is in many of his plants--he has used what is called m/c mixed chromosome breedin g of tets & diploid, not easily done. Real hybridizers like Ken are experimenters, and he is working with medians which are smaller plants. They usually bloom before TBs or with the earlier TB season.

Magical Encounter is a nice, heavily saturated "juicy" pink to me...I show it here next to Gypsy Woman so you can see the contrast.

Edit....the color in this photo looks a bit too intense, must have been my camera setting...however, it is a nice rich rich pink.

that's magical encounter? I remember it lighter pink with a deeper pink center and red b

Hi bonjon,

Yes, it is. I looked at it in plant files here too and I think the last two pics by Doss and Tntigger are the most like what it looks like for me. Take a look. It's a fairly solid deep shrimp pink (not having a deeper center) with a darker beard but I woudn't consider it a red beard myself.

Here is Tntigger's photo:

Thanks Cheesy- I was remembering it from seeing it at Schreiner's display garden - it doesn't look but pale pink to me. not much like tntigger's photo.

South Hamilton, MA

Magical Encounter is a schreiner & in their catalog in case you can't find somewhere else. I must say that the Plant Files picture is a better pic.

West Bend, WI

I so agree!!! :-) Normally catalog photos are nice but I remember when Magical Encounter was first introduced. I looked at the photo and went "ugh!". Somehow I acquired it, I believe as a gift with another order, and fortunately it is much nicer than in the catalog. Notice on Doss's photo and also on Tntigger's that at the very edge of the falls it seems to "flatten out" (for lack of a better term or description) and get pale. I have noticed that trait myself. In fact it's even evident in Schreiner's catalog pic! ;-)

My favorite pinks are SDBs. That includes apricot colors, but I really want crayola crayon pink. Working on it.

West Bend, WI

This is another nice pink I grow, RASPBERRY JEWELRY (TB, Cadd 2001). It grows like there's no tomorrow, which is great for a pink which are not known necessarily for vigor. Good bud count and a large flower size. As you can see it's a mid pink with a darker fall wash. Quite nice.

ooo, now you've got me thinking about some of my pinkest dwarfs...hmmm. Mini Song, Classy Babe, Piggy Bank are my deepest pinks. Have you seen Pussycat Pink that Paul Black introduced last year? Looks like it may be your shade. :-)

I got Magical Encounter from Schreiner's last year but it hasn't bloomed yet.

South Hamilton, MA

I have seen photos & worried a bit about the very open standards--not my thing. We do have 'Piggy Bank' but it is being shaded out so we will have to move it.

Can anyone ID this one? I thought it was VANITY but it is not because down in the throat there is a little lavender coloring.

I should say purple at the tip of the beard.

West Bend, WI

TwinLakes Chef,

It appears LIKELY (no guarantee!) to me that the pink you have there is GODSEND. It is technically a horned tall bearded. The lavender tips should be lifting up into raised points a bit. Here's a photo of mine you can compare:

And here is a side view of GODSEND so you can see better what I mean. Hope this helps.

Cheesy, not to belabor the point, but Magical Encounter, in Schreiners display GARDEN, is pinker prettier than that horrible photo in their catalogue. Remember I had to go back, did a triple take, triple check, that that flower had the right tag. Think I even asked someone, then took my own photo of it for "recording" the color. The Schreiner catalog shows it much paler than what I saw, but tntigger's photo was much darker pink than what I saw "live". Maybe it's one of those irises that's heavily effected by soil for the color.

Los Alamos, NM(Zone 5a)

I was not familiar with Godsend but love the little purple horns. Not sure where I would put another one, but I would love to have that one!

Schreiner's catalog is loaded with wonderful pictures, but I guess they mess up or run out of time every now and then. tntigger is one of the photographers on DG whose photos are, to me, outstanding. I have watched her work at conventions and am always impressed. But cameras are tricky and it is hard to accurately photograph colors. Sometimes things happen between the camera and the computer than change color just enough to be maddening. And, of course, the soil can change the color a bit as well.

Tntigger's photos are outstanding. was hoping someday to get some pointers from her!

Have noticed some irises just won't photograph well. First three photos of Lady Friend I ever saw were truly ugly. When Cooleys sent it as a bonus, I planted it aroundside the house where I wouldn't ever see it. Was amazedt that it became my favorite.

OC, CA & Twin Lakes , IA(Zone 4b)

Oh, thank-you for the ID; and now I remember getting it at round-up and who gave it to me. You guys are great! Got Magical Encounter from Schreiner's last year but it did not bloom this year. Hopefully it will in 2009. Most everything else from them bloomed.

WOW everyone!! Just because I don't have pink doesn't mean they aren't out there. Lovelies indeed!! Where do I start? How many do I limit myself too? DH of 50 years says I can't remove anymore sod. What does one do?

Anyway, seeing all the nice pinks is refreshing and joyous. Thanks for sharing yours. Are there others some of you have to share?

Raleigh, NC

I once had a DH like that - well, more of a......- found it was easier to live without him than to fight it.

But whenever I find someone tells me I can't do something, I generally find a way to go over, around or under.... What would DH say if the sod was, say, dying in that area? Better yet, is there a patch that needs repair somewhere? Could the sod you need moved be added there to everyone's benefit? I have to dig up Zoysia to add irises ..... much to the horror of my lawn loving neighbors! [I'm allergic to all grass!]

Los Alamos, NM(Zone 5a)

If DH won't do it, you could always do it yourself. I learned to do that in a previous marriage. Now I still do it myself because its good for my back -- cured my back problems and I don't have to wait for him to be in the mood.

Delhi, IA

Hey, I started out with an old pump with a circle of tulips around it. That got larger and larger until it is now over 55 feet___the length of the cement driveway. Then the grass out front just kept dying out about 18" wide(aided by a bottle of roundup) each year until I was 30 foot in the other direction. And at 71 with another bed of 150 daylilies, a bed connecting 3 blue spruce and a vegie garden it is all I can really handle. DH is right.

But if anyone will be dividing pinks and have some that will need a home___I'll send postage. Somewhere I'll make room.

Thanks iris lovers.

Maybe you can help me, about 30 + years ago, I had an iris called Pink Champagne. I believe it was a tall bearded. It was med. to pale pink with orange beards and had fragrance. I can't seem to find it anywhere. Anyone ever hear of it? Anyone have it?
