OOOo the War Chief is beautiful. I love the reds, especially when the sun shines thru them.

Mainer, I appreciate the info. It looks the same. Now, if I can just remember where this one was blooming. Did you mean to say if it has a purple base at the fans that it is not Amethyst Flame?

My sweet friend Rainy-Jane sent me a bunch of older beauties from her historic gardens a couple of years back and they are some of the most beautiful ones I have. We both are working deligently to find names for some of them that were grown by her grandmother and her mother before Jane.
This is another she gifted me from her gardens. A beautiful blue

Yes, check the leave fans for purple and if there is not any it is a good bet it is Amethyst Flame. Mine is in the shade so is darker but I do see the flame in the falls in your picture. That would place that iris in the 1950's.

Will check out my blues next to see if any resemble that beauty you are showing.

Would be interested in some Black Game Cock and instructions on how to plant a LA iris. Are they close to siberians and ensata in what they like for being fed?

Love the red velvety glow in War Chief.

Texas/Okla central b, United States(Zone 7b)

I can send you Black Gamecock this summer, as far as instruction, I know nothing
I just stuck them in the ground and neglected them and they have prospered.....some in sun, some in semi-shade..some dry, some wet......

Los Alamos, NM(Zone 5a)

On Black Gamecock, I, too, planted them and gave them lots of water -- but considering this is New Mexico, that wasn't all that much. I understand they like acid soil which I don't have so I dump coffee grounds on them every so often.
I took a course in LA Iris Judging from Hooker Nichols at the AIS Convention. He hybridizes them. He said they like to be fed a Miracid or Miracle Grow every two weeks, but I have never done that. I did plant them in compost with bonemeal and some slow release balanced fertilizer but that was months ago. They are growing just fine, but I am not sure it is time for them to bloom here. So far I have had only one Tall Bearded bloom this year.
I believe they are pretty easy to grow, but don't know about blooms.

Durham, ME(Zone 3a)

Okay, Jackieshar, looked up my Victoria Falls pics and mine are going to be darker being in a colder climate but this was taken first opened and later it faded to the shade of yours.

I think you might have Victoria Falls another Dykes Medal winner. Mine came from Argyle Acres a source for HIPS members and others to obtain the correct iris to grow against the noid to be sure. Mine is only 1 rhizome right now or I would offer to share with you.

Should be about 40" tall, EL & Re TB Ruffled, uniform to med blue with a white signal patch on center of falls, white beard. HM 1978, AM 1980, DM 1984.

I thought that might be....thanks a bunch for the conformation

Braselton, GA(Zone 7b)

I have one that looks very similar...also no name..will see if I can find a marker somewhere tomorrow for this one....but it may not have one still.

Jackie, your copper classic is it mostly a pinkish color on the falls? If it is I think one of my supprise ones is like it, will have to wait for the rain to end and it to bloom again on the other buds to be sure, but may be I can name another one, the first one was Autum Circus, so it now has a tag yea. Susan

Durham, ME(Zone 3a)

JanetS, That does look like Victoria Falls and being a Dykes Medal winner would be all over the US doing well. The only way to tell for sure is to grow one you know is Victoria Falls next to it or find the tag.

Sand Springs, OK(Zone 7a)

the la iris grow with out feeding heavy but they don't bloom proper with regular feeding lots water you can grow them chest high
i am 5'5".to get your soil acid use sulpher, manure , some use water and vinegar 1 part vinegar for Jap . and La.
no lime , lime sweetens soil
the miracle grow for azaleas is great for La.
there are a lot of soil additives sold to help store water in dry areas . la are at there best in pond like situations .
i have fiber Glass pond i sink big tubs filled with clay or untreated cat litter in pond and plant La in these pots . then just pour miracle grow in to water. hydro and weed free , but alas still have to keep leaves out and circulate water with small pump or big bubbler to keep smell away
mosquito's wont hatch in running water if no pump there are little donut thing you throw in pond to keep bug away.

I guess I am just lucky, don't know if mine are LAs or what I call them just bog iris, this pic taken yesterday..... my soil is alkaline sands with no additives in this area.....no fertilizer, just 10 years of growth. Hubby is digging out this stand this summer, he likes some of this area clear...so I am finding a no-mow zone to move them into...I have about 8 stands such as this...many for trades if one is intrested...

Thanks Tazzy and eveyone. LA's are very new to me for they do not usually grow in my zone. Treat them like Japanese iris is basically what you are saying. What beauties.

Here is a better picture today of my blue walking iris, Neomarica caerulea
I am glad with dale_a_gardener's post to be reminded that it is called Brazilian walking iris and that it shows up in different shades of blue and lavender-blue. A book says it is native to southern Brazil. It is lightly fragrant. Seems to me the scent of apples.

You're kidding! Tell your DH he knows NOTHING about gardening, lol! Of course, if you would like to get rid of one of them....I could surely adopt it! (ok, I feel a first sign of addiction hitting me, hehehe)

your redish iris might be( Stop the Music ), it is in the plant files

Roswell, NM(Zone 6a)

Jackie, mine is the pinkish color yours shows up in the picture, with a hint of gold color on the upper fall. I'll keep looking for a name, have some not named that are doing good, and my bog iris by the house and porch are all yellow solid and yellow and white this year not one dark purple like last year, do they just bloom every other year? These haven't been moved or messed with in over 3 years. Oh well cant wait till next year to see what color they come up with, lol Susan

Texas/Okla central b, United States(Zone 7b)

are you sure they are bog type iris? sound like an iris called butter and sugar....can't remember the species..tazzy probably will know, she's our iris enclopedia....and what a blessing

most of mine bloom every year..soon as my back gets better I will be sending the blues/purple..probably any day

Here is a picture of the bog iris that are by the house, they are shaped just like the purple ones in Jackies picture. Not a real good one, I'll try and get a better one when the rain stops but don't want to rush it for that. Susan

jackieshar>>>>> Your pretty blue iris in the bogs look and sound like Louisiana iris to me.

They were later to be paid attention to and hybridized than bearded iris and Siberians.
Just minding their own business in the bayous. When I was first buying Louisiana iris in the 1970's there was a man still in the daylily and Louisiana iris business who had been one of the earlier to go out in a boat to get plants to start seeing how they would turn out with planned crosses.

On of my first, that I still have, is named for Mr. McMillan, "Mac's Blue Heaven."

karmafarm,
I **love** Figurehead.

Roswell, NM(Zone 6a)

Ok Whats the difference? The ladies here said they should be in a bog, Do they both grow in bog areas? The only iris like mine I've seen bloom are at other places and they had theirs at the edge of the ponds, and I really have just started trying to learn a little about the bog ones, I have some also that are suppose to be blue that came out of a pond in the water but their leaves are grass like right now but they are just stating to come out again, would they possible be LA's? Sorry about the questions, but I don't want to move any if they won't grow. Susan

Sand Springs, OK(Zone 7a)

No only the La.need the extra water
This is the size of La iris leaves, spuria and TB leaves are all about the same .
the thin ones or grass like leaves are Siberiian they like moist soil but take dry to
