First Lilies of the Season

Lisbon, IA(Zone 5a)

Oh no, don't stop posting!! We get to live vicariously through you, Steve and all our friends in warmer states till out stuff starts blooming.. :)

(Sue) South Central, IA(Zone 5a)

Yes, shorts!
I did buy a rider to mow my pasture too! I keep stealing from the horses and that has to stop! I am going to put the permanent fence back up if it ever dries up a bit.

Post away.........my earliest lily is still a very long way away from blooming

Lufkin, TX(Zone 8b)

here is another new one for me, Lollipop.

i have a newbie question. the lily above, Lollipop, doesnt have many buds, about 8 or 9 total. some of the others have many more than that. is that typical to have so few or will it have more as the bulb gets larger?

Willamette Valley, OR(Zone 8a)

As I recall Lollipop doesn't put on many buds, nor does it get huge bulbs, at least in my garden. What it does do is multiply real fast, so that seems to be how it focuses its energy. Expect to have many Lollipops after a couple of years.

Greenwood, IN(Zone 5b)

I don't have any new varieties....but lots getting ready to pop~! LOL

I was so excited.....I planted a few lily bulbs in 2006, fall in this spot. We had drainage issues here we didn't get corrected till last summer with a french drain. I was worried that there were no more bulbs here as I dug down and only found a few stem bulblets near the surface, I must have planted everything pretty deeply as look what's come up!!

This is where my tulips were - now you can hardly see them. These will be bright pink. I planted these 2006 also. I read you shouldn't plant lilies and tulips together, something about tulips passing viruses to lilies? Oh well - nothing seems affected yet and they've shared the bed for two seasons now.

BTW aggie & pard, I have also found Lollipops don't have high bud counts for me.....contrary to the catalogue description when I bought them......

Some are getting tall...

Wow Steve, looks like your lilies are related to rabbits!! They are multiplying all over the place. :) LOL

Greenwood, IN(Zone 5b)

Thanks Diann! :-) Yeah I am pleased - want to see how the ones I planted last fall come back next year as well! I was a little worried as we dropped to around 40 last night and even into high 30's near here and I was worried we might get a freeze - and EVERYTHING is up so that could be disasterous! LOL. I saw you guys were in 20's - did your stuff fare OK? Supposed to be cold again tonight...

(Judith) Denver, CO(Zone 5b)

I'd like to ask a newbie question. When lilies multiply how long does it take till the new ones bloom? I have a bunch of White Stargazers that are multipying like crazy.

Lisbon, IA(Zone 5a)

Steve, Thanks for asking, we had a nice cloud cover last night and so it didn't get below 32 here. This should cause no problems to any lilies or hostas. :) Now, let's just hope this same scenario doesn't happen mid May.

Bring your woollies, it's not going to be very warm here on Saturday. Maybe 55, let's hope the weather people are fibbing to us again and it will be warmer.

Mt Duckling. i have been amazed at the number of buds on this lily. there are 3 bulbs planted fairly close together.

Very nice, keep them coming! :)

Greenwood, IN(Zone 5b)

Nice lilies, aggie. I hve a few "London" Asiatics from fall planting, but few aside from that in bloom. Lots are budding up, though.

Greenwood, IN(Zone 5b)

This is "Algarve" - one of my favorite Asiatics - actually it is an LA hybrid.

These are almost ready to pop...

I have lots of liliums almost ready but just some Asiatics blooming at this point. The beds will look better when I the daffodil and other spring bulb foliage yellows enough to pull.

Here is the other side....

I think I counted around 22 buds on this one!!

OK, really just one more! My OT's and trumpets are getting tall. The tall one in the picture is already 59" tall.

Give them another week or so and they should be beautiful!

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

Your house is in such a pretty setting, Steve. Can't wait to see the full effect of your efforts. :)

Lisbon, IA(Zone 5a)

Oh Wow!!! Steve it's going to be so beautiful!!!! Keep the pictures coming, ok? :)

Was it warm there today? It got to a whole 59 degrees here. I'm so tired of cold weather. At least the sun was shining most all afternoon.

Thank you, revclaus.

Thanks Moby...that is very nice of you to say. I am looking forward to it. Spent all day weeding and then we mowed the lawn and didn't get inside to eat until 6 pm. We had so much grass and weeds in the bed and I had to get it cleaned up after seeing all of the immaculate Iowa gardens ^_^ Send pictures your your house as well when your things bloom! I like the landscape at your new place.

Thanks Diann - I will! I sent you a picture of my new hosta bed. It was 74 here today for a high....48 this morning. 93 yesterday. 70-something Friday. 70's to low 80's next week. Nice and non-humid today. Up and down like a yo-yo though. 59 sounds very comfortable, somehow ;-) 59 beats 93 ANY day!!!!

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

Steve, you put me to shame. Your gardens look absolutely perfect and oh so organized. Please keep sharing your gardens as they explode with color. I just love watching everybody's gardens come in to life again.

Those OTs look nice and tall. I really like the tall OTs height that comes to them after they are undisturbed for a couple years.

Lisbon, IA(Zone 5a)

Yeah, 59 wouldn't be bad except there was a 35 mph North wind that just cut right though a person. Even the cats weren't too impressed with spending a lot of time outside and they come equiped with little fur coats. ;) LOL

Chicago, IL(Zone 5b)

I'm in fur-coat land, too, and have been checking this thread every day for new pictures and signs of hope. What a pretty garden, and happy looking lilies. Can't wait for more pix.

Zolfo Springs, FL(Zone 9b)

Steve & Aggie love the lilies .

Lufkin, TX(Zone 8b)
