(Am I in the right forum for this?) Has everyone heard about the Sauvie Island Garden tour this weekend? It sounds wonderful. You can go to the Hardy Plant Society web page for more details.
Has anyone heard about any plant sales coming up in the Portland area?
PNW 2008 Planned Events Calendar
I know this thread is not for chatting, but it seems to have petered out anyway. who knows about the photo of the "garden bed" of impatiens at the beginning? How is that profusion possible? Does it involve pots?
That's from Rachel's garden in Olympia (rachierabbit). I'm in contact with her on Facebook; I'll ask. I think it's a "mattress" box full of dirt with impatiens planted in it. I do know that she does bulbs in it in the spring.
katie59, maybe we could arainge a tour of Rachels next summer? Jim
I don't think that is actually at Rachel's. She doesn't have an arbor or gravel path like that-or, at least, she didn't last year. I think she took the photo somewhere else.
I mentioned this to Rachel on Facebook; hopefully she'll find some time to respond here . . . I know she does have a bed like this at her place. I think a tour would be cool -- we'll see what she says.
This is in response to my email to Rachel:
"It's an actual metal bed frame that I purchased at a garage sale and then I built a wooden box in it, filled it with dirt and planted it full of bulbs and wildflowers."
Kathy
Hi Susy, long time, Jim
Huh, Kathy, whaddya know, I know there are pictures of her bedframe thing somewhere on this forum, but I'd thought she said she took this one somewhere else. Oh well.
Hi Jim!
Susybell, I went to the Rock Garden Society meeting yesterday. the guest speaker was Riz Reyes who gave a slide show on his plant expedition to Shechuan, China with Dan Hinckly and others, his presentation was great I see him as a new generation plantsman. he is 26 and has a nursery at Shoreline in Seattle,I don't have his website handy but if you or anyone want it I'll post it. also Diana of Collectors Nursery will speak at the next meet of the RGS in Oct. I really liked visiting her nursery when I visited you in Vancouver, so I'll try to keep that date open. Jim
Hi Jim -
That sounds interesting. I had seen some of his garden pictures and blog early on (2006?) on the Web, but haven't heard/seen anything about him lately. I didn't realize he had opened up a nursery in Shoreline. Would love to know where it is.
Kathy
Jim, sounds great. Please do post the website! Hope you do make it to Diana's talk. How's your garden look at the end of Sept? I still want to see everything you've done this year.
Katie, Susy, here's the sites www.rizreyes.com/horticulture and http//nextgenerationgardener.blogspot.com he has a lot to check out. Jim PS has anyone been to Citus Nursery?
Thanks Jim! Do you mean Cistus? Yes, but not this year. It's worth a visit, though.
That's great. It's so great to see a budding horticulturist in action - I'll keep tabs on him. Thanks, Jim!
Susy, yes Cistus, I'll have to put them on my must see list. did I say that this summer is flying bye. I'm almost done with this years hybridizing, I bought a few plants from Naylor Creek at their fall sale, and 2 have some blooms ready to open. can't miss an opportunity, one is Red Alert, thanks, Jim
In August every year there is a great event in Gold Bar, Wa called the "Fronderosa Frolic" hosted by Judith at Fancy Fronds. It is a great event where a lot of micro nurseries set up shop...........it is a drive but well worth it. Cistus is a vender there but thier nursery on Sauvie Island is definatly a must see! Is this appropriate or did I mess up? Sorry I'm not too good with rules sometimes.

No, I think this is good. We just have to find out who has access to the calendar to post the event. Is there an actual date for next year yet?
I just checked out the website and it looks she hasn't set a date for next year. http://www.fancyfronds.com/ But I will keep an eye to see when she has it posted.
Okay. Cool!
Hey gang sorry about the confusion with the bedframe. Susy and Kathy are both correct. The picture at the top of this thread was taken at the Rose Garden at Pt Defiance in Tacoma. I also have a bedframe flowerbed at my house. It's a metal head and footboard with a steel frame. I build a planter box inside the frame that I filled with topsoil and planted.
gang, this looks like a great sale, keep me posted. one local nursery in Port Orchard, Gig Harbor area Glenwood Nursery has a combined nursery weekend. last year it was packed. I'll post the dates when I find out. Jim
Hey this evening on PBS is "The Botany of Desire"!
Thanks for the heads up!

Yes!! I'd like to go to that this year . .
For some reason I can't see anything on the calendar link. It opens up to a lovely calendar, which I assume from reading this thread is full of fun events, but the one I am looking at is completely blank. I've poked around at some of the options, but can't seem to get anything to show up. What am I doing wrong?
You're not doing anything wrong. :-)
The idea was that people would add stuff to this thread and then someone would go update the calendar. The gal who was maintaining the calendar doesn't get on much anymore. I doubt that there's anything on the calendar for this month. Until someone wants to take on the maintenance, the updates will just be on the thread.
I would be happy to help out adding events to the calender if someone could walk me through the steps. Looks like first thing is to have the magic password to "add events," and personally I think that should just be posted so everyone can add directly. But, however I can help out - just let me know.
Mother's Day weekend - Camano Island Studio Tour. Self-guided to numerous artists' homes/studios on the island. While not a 'garden' event per se, almost all of the artists in fact have gorgeous gardens - so it's a bit of a double-dip event. Well worth the drive. Free unless you buy some art (which I inevitably do).

I updated the calendar as best I could.
Thanks, BH!
I went to Fronderosa Frolic 2 years ago and it was excellent. I'd love to go back again.
Reminder of the Great Sunflower Project - not a date specific event, but a fun project, especially with children.
