Blooms starting!

Phoenix, AZ(Zone 9a)

I had to bring this one inside yesterday before the rain beat it up --- the bud had been fat but unopened for about 4 days....its not warm here yet, but this plant and 2 others have sent up multiple bloom stalks.....

Very nice, mrsj. Who is it ?
I also like the one on your member page. I'm so hungry for iris blooms....

Phoenix, AZ(Zone 9a)

Thank you!

Unfortunately I can't identify - my neighbors cat dug and tossed all the first iris I planted last year....and I had only charted them....tags don't last in our heat......it is in the area where I planted one called "Sign of Leo", but the color does not look right....could be because it set bloom in such cold weather, I'm not sure if that would affect it.....I wish I knew!

I got smarter with the second round I planted and created a data file with photos of all the iris I ordered so if it happened again.....and it did....I can still keep track!

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

mrsj - the weather just might cause a change in color. I have a very dark June blooming daylily but when it blooms in November it's yellow and orange.

Hannibal, NY(Zone 6a)

Very pretty, lucky you.

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

I'm having definite zone envy here! I like the dark colors.

Phoenix, AZ(Zone 9a)

This is "Zurich".....

I love this one, it is so white, the beard has a tint of blue in it too! This is the 3rd time it has bloomed since planted in Fall 2006 - it bloomed the Spring '07, then again in September '07 and now!

Sorry Mrsj, can't help with id'ing the first one. Heck, I have trouble keeping track of my own (lol). I've got some blooming now also but some have look like they have been affected by the weather. We've had more rain here than normal and if it's not raining it windy. I've got a few with very purple buds..don't know what's up with that or if they'll even open...weird.
The last one is nice, I like the blue beards.

Winston Salem, NC(Zone 7b)

Love that beard and the almost pure white - so nice!! Can't wait till late summer so I can order some Iris and get busy digging! Very nice pics!

Blythe, CA(Zone 10b)

Don, I told you so...you're not going to have any grass left by the time we get done with you (lol)

Winston Salem, NC(Zone 7b)

So true BB! I haven't told you about the 20 Canna's I have already ordered! Its all your fault! LOL

Blythe, CA(Zone 10b)

Is that all ? Wait until everything starts blooming...then you need one in every color. I ran out of room and starting putting all my plants in 3 gallon tubs...and still ordering more . You only have to leave room to park !

Cedar Rapids, IA(Zone 5a)

Remind me to have a spring garden in Arizona in my next life....Sigh
Tow foot of snow/ice and -5 degrees this morning.

Have you tried Brother's P-Touch industrial strength labels on metal garden stakes? Iowa 100 degree summers & -24 degree winters + snow, hail & rain cannot fade or delaminate the darn things.

South Hamilton, MA

We use P-touch on metal labels, don't know if industrial strength. Have lasted 5-6 yrs. so far.

Phoenix, AZ(Zone 9a)

I use one at the office.....I should bring it home for the weekend....

Los Alamos, NM(Zone 5a)

I just bought one -- on recommendations from this forum. Will start label printing soon.

Thanks for the photo and info on Zürich. I had been wondering if that wouldn't be a good one for my garden. Sounds like it would be. Your pictures are gorgeous.

Georgetown, SC(Zone 8a)

MrsJ: I love Zurich!

I have exactly one Iris blooming. I think it's Eleanor Roosevelt.
Here the long view.

Beautiful Debin, I love purple ones !

Phoenix, AZ(Zone 9a)

That is beautiful Debin!

Zurich is blooming AGAIN!! It is non-stop!!!

Blythe, CA(Zone 10b)

Wow MrsJ ! How many buds does it have ? I've read where some can have any many as 15.

Winston Salem, NC(Zone 7b)

Beautiful Deb - Note to self - get Eleanor Roosevelt!

Phoenix, AZ(Zone 9a)

Right now it has 9 buds on 3 flower stalks.....last month I had 7 blooms on 2 stalks.....

Winston Salem, NC(Zone 7b)

Hi Audrey - Are you still talking about Zurich if so I am making a mental note to self about rebloomers here in the valley..... Beautiful white!

Winston Salem, NC(Zone 7b)

I just had an epifany! The Eleanor Roosevelt and the Zurich's would look stunning together!

Blythe, CA(Zone 10b)

Mrsj, I'm going to keep my eye out for Zurich since I've been wanting to add a couple of white ones to my collection.

Phoenix, AZ(Zone 9a)

I am talking about Zurich.....and I agree, it would look stunning with Eleanor!!!

Santa Ynez, CA

I think in my garden it is going to be "Golden Immortal" to bloom first, a very pretty yellow, although the Crimson king is always a sure bet, I can see one starting. Been cleaning iris beds for about a week now, feeling every year 43 in my body.

Do send us a picture when it blooms. What is the lovely in this picture? I will clean my iris beds when the snow melts from them. But that won't be until after the storm predicted until after Thursday and Friday. Sigh. Winter is so long here.

Santa Ynez, CA

that iris is Breakers, i am not a huge blue fan but this one is very pretty. our weather here is like summer right now, next week who knows, we had a lot of rain so i am glad to have the iris have a little break, i don't want any rot:( this picture is golden immortal

Glad Breakers did well in CA. We used to have it in MA and it grew very well. Certainly I would reommend it.

Santa Ynez, CA

one I just can't seem to have any luck with is Beverly Sills, I just pulled out another rotted one today, I have two left in different places, we will see.

South Hamilton, MA

For years the favorite pink TB in our region has been Vanity. That is very strange as it is borer prone. It just grows so well, it grows faster than the bores can eat. the foliage is quite poor. Now the pink we are searching for is one with good foliage, not attractive to borers and grows like Vanity. I have seen Beverly Sills in the area (haven't grown it ourselves) but not impressive. We do need a tougher pink.

Los Alamos, NM(Zone 5a)

Glad to hear this discussion of what grows and what doesn't. I don't have a Beverly Sills because I heard that it was hard to get it to bloom. Maybe I will try Vanity next. I too have great luck with Breakers, and I love the photo of Golden Immortal. I gather it grows well for you too.

Phoenix, AZ(Zone 9a)

Those are beautiful iris makj!

I only have one pink --- "Cherubs Smile" --- pink with white falls.... I just can't seem to make up my mind which pinks I want to add!!!

(fingers crossed) no borers in this part of the country.

South Hamilton, MA

I think in NM you might have a better choice of pink TBs than Vanity--its foliage needs work. For our climate I see that Mid-America carries Maker's Mark. I am thinking of thrying it since it comes from Michigan. No bloom here yet, we are too far north. I can offer freezing rain at the moment.

Los Alamos, NM(Zone 5a)

Here is a beautiful pink from my garden, but I have no clue what it is. It came with the house and the previous owner was gone before we bought the house. It is large and ruffly and beautiful but I don't have a clue what it is. I try to know the names of all my iris cultivars.
There is no picture of Maker's Mark on Mid-America -- at least that I can find, but they do have a lovely pink called Austar Pink. I wonder if anyone has tried growing that one -- or Maker's Mark, for that matter.
The growing strength of each cultivar is also important.

Hal Stahly sent my daughter Maker's Mark about almost 2 years ago.Unfortunately the freeze last Easter kept it from blooming. If it blooms this year for her i will post it on Daves.
