GREAT pictures!!! Thanks for posting them :)
I really need to add some coneflowers & zinnias to my garden. I use to have them in my garden when I lived in NY and I remember all the butterflies would be drawn to them.

WOW Melsalz !!! That's a Triple !!! ha.
(sigh) I've been wating a couple of years to see some Tiger ST around my Zinnia garden, but apparently they just don't come around my place that often. (I suspect that they are there when I'm away at work) Thanks for the great picture. They're beautiful.

Siouxsie40 - thanks for the comment. Yes, yes, yes - Zinnia and Coneflower were VERY popular for my BF's this year.
Both plants are very easy and relatively carefree - and attract lots of BS's. I'm sure you can find some free seeds by looking through the trade lists:

Echinacea purpurea
http://davesgarden.com/community/trading/search.php?search_text=PFPID:26

Zinnia elegans
http://davesgarden.com/community/trading/search.php?search_text=PFPID:143

So get out and get some planted - you won't regret it. :^)

Everybody - post us some more great double pictures...Even if they've been posted elsewhere already.

Happy gardening.

I have been planting zinnias for several years now. I just save the seed each fall then plant a whole row in my garden. This year has been especially bountiful with the butterflies. My thought is because of the drought, the wildflowers aren't blooming so they come to where the flowers are blooming. Here's a better triple.

Woah -- that's a great picture. I sure do love those Tiger's. I didn't see one all summer. :^(

As the flowers dry up, I break the seed heads all apart, and toss them back into the garden.
I had tons of volunteer plants early this spring, and I dug them up and moved them around to an empty spot. I even had some new colors of Zinnias, I'm supposing that they had become cross pollenated. but they sure were a pretty color.

Like this one. It's Pink in the middle, and Orange on the outside.

jmorth, THANKS SO MUCH for adding your pics to this post.
I know you got a good post going elsewhere with the New England Asters - and I've enjoyed that greatly.

I have definitely found me some sources for THAT plant. Wow!!!!
So many different species of bugs.

KEEP THEM COMING FOLKS. :^)

Mooresville, NC(Zone 7b)

Wow jmorth, you've been busy with the camera. I'm going to have to plant asters next year.

Spring Hill, FL(Zone 9b)

Thanks pford1854 for posting the trade list links!! I forgot all about them :(
I will have to add some kind of Asters to my list as well as must have plants for bf's! I just have to find a variety that will work in my zone.

Thanks to everyone else for posting their wonderful butterfly filled pics!!

FUN THREAD! love the pics, everyone!

I dream of a whole swath of coneflowers across my side yard for the bfs next year!

And I have to trade in my New England Aster 'Purple Dome' for one like Jmorth's!

And Zinnias are a 'must', too!

Somerset, KY(Zone 6b)

That's the TRUTH tabasco -- I'm going to get some of those Asters started, and I'm going to fertilize them all I can so that they'll grow big - with tons of blooms.
Them I'm going to sit back with camera in hand and see what comes of it. ha.

thanks for posting everyone.

Let's see some more DOUBLES pics. :^)
(triples and more are most welcomed too)

Somerset, KY(Zone 6b)

Here's another quick double that I got today.
There were acutally about four Gulf Frits around today, but couldn't wait for them all to get on the same flower. ha.

Please share more double pics. It's a whole lotta fun.

Have a great day.

Close to butterflies, couple of Hummingbird moths:

AWESOME.
Yes yes - hummingbird moths are also welcomed too.

funny - look how they are at the same angle... their heads are up and their tails are pointing down at the same angle.
cool.

thanks jmorth for the pic.

Mooresville, NC(Zone 7b)

Wonderful Jmorth!! I have a few hummer moths here too. But they are very hard to photograph. Much less two at a time. I agree with Pford, "Awesome!"

Sorry, neither double nor butterfly...but a rather unique perspective of the Hummingbird moth -
(check out it's proboscis - 2 or 3 times longer than the moth's length)

Holy Smokes - that looks like a freaky Ghost -- or even an owl.
Then, I saw its proboscis - that's like a foot long. ha.
Where in da heck do they keep that stored? ha.

Thanks for sharing.

Here's one of mine with a pretty long proboscis.
It's a Snowberry Clearwing (Hemaris diffinis)

And a couple more GF.
Zinnia's are running out -- see how ragged they look.
Also notice how bad the BF wings are looking too.

Here's a good indication on how bad the wings are looking on a few of the older GF.
They look completely dried out.

LindaTX8 - Thanks for sharing those long-wings.
Thery are really pretty.
Haven't seen any up in my area, but it could be possible I guess.
