Help with a Dracaena Marginata (Dragon tree) Please

Wauneta, NE

I have a Dracaena Marginata that I bought here not to long ago. When I went to repot it I noticed that one of the stems was bent over look to me like it is almost broke. If I cut it off where it is broke at is there a way to get it to root? Thank you for your help. I really appreciate it.

Hi. I can't claim to be an expert, but I do have several Dracaenas - one that is over 20 years old! I recently got one that has red leaves.

Anyway, to answer your question, in the Plant Files, this is what it says:

Propagation Methods:
By dividing the rootball
From herbaceous stem cuttings
From seed; sow indoors before last frost
By air layering

Seed Collecting:
Remove fleshy coating on seeds before storing
Allow unblemished fruit to ripen; clean and dry seeds
Properly cleaned, seed can be successfully stored

I checked my propagation handbook, and it mentioned air layering, stem tip cuttings (upright), and stem sections (3 inches long with two or more nodes, placed horizontally in the soil), and seeds for draceanas.

So, it sounds like you could just cut the tip off and put it in a pot, then cut the sections below it into short lenghts that you plant horizontally with one or more good nodes facing upward.

Hope this helped.

Yeah, I can tell you that putting it in a glass of water does *not * work!

LOL! Sorry, pagancat, but that cracked me up! :)

I've got a really tall leany D. marginata that I sometimes think about trying to trim & root, but I'm too attached to the tree at this point to risk messing it up.

No apology necessary, you can laugh at my mistakes any time.... *sniff*
