Don't anyone plan any road trips without me! Moby, I'm coming over Saturday to look at your garden. I know where you live, so consider yourself warned!

llilyfan, I'm coming to look at your gardens too. Just have to figure out a time. The Salmon Classic lilies I got from you at the RU bloomed and I put a picture in PF. I'm so proud. The Casablancas I didn't think were ever going to come up finally did around Memorial Day, and they look like they'll bloom any day now.

Speaking of hibiscus, my Cranberry Punch is doing well. I bought a little 3" tall one last year for $2.50, because I'm cheap and must have a thing for delayed gratification. Anyway, it's a little over a foot tall now and I've had six blooms already and still plenty of buds.

No pictures from me, as the oldest bed I have is in its second year and the only things blooming in it right now are the gaillardia and the hibiscus. I'm so envious of everyone's established yardens! (I like that word.) And some of you even have trees! Unfathomable! Sigh.

Ripon, WI(Zone 4a)

Ticker, they overwinter just fine - I don't do anything to them. Sometimes leaves blow over some of them in the fall and I just leave them there. But have to get them off right away in the Spring or the semps will rot. And yes, they spread fast.

Thanks Goldfinch! I just might have an area that they would work well in. :)

Moby, are you going to be collecting seeds from your hardy Hibiscus? If so, could I receive some?
You guys talk about weeding, this old lady just can't seem to keep up this yr. with pulling around sprinklers and attacking the weeds that seem to grow without water.

This is a picture of our yard. Hope you enjoy it!

Very nice Maxine! :)

You guys make me feel like taking a road trip.....

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

Do it! All you have to do is slide south and on west ~ we're practically in a row!

Thanks for the warning McGlory ~ won't be too exciting here but you can come and pull weeds anytime you like. >:)

Maxine, if there are seeds, you bet I'll save some. Don't know if they will come true or not, but who cares? :)

Great gardens, everyone.

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

Ticker ~ hibiscuses? Wouldn't that be Hibisci? ;) just kidding....

As for the Jap beetles, I've never seen one here. (pounding on wood)

Lisbon, IA(Zone 5a)

Thppppppppppppppppppt. :) Consider yourself very lucky you don't have a problem witht hem yet...

Southeast, NE(Zone 5a)

Excuse me, but Moby, aren't you the one who told me that when you're visiting someone else's garden you never weed or deadhead or anything like that?

Or maybe that only applies to invited guests. ;-)

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

There you have it! If you'd like an engraved invitaion to come weed, I'll be happy to send you one. :D

Southeast, NE(Zone 5a)

I'd prefer one of your hypertufa invitations. :=)

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

Bring your rubber gloves on Saturday!

Hey Maxine, that is a beautiful yarden. How do you even start to keep up with the weeds? I have more weeds this year than I've had in several years and have weeded more diligently which makes matters worse.

I too have a great need for a road trip, but most of the beauty is now behind us for this year at least if we are talking lilies. I really do intend to do some traveling next year. This year has been a real bummer with my boss fighting cancer and having employees quit or vacationing. Maybe by next year things will settle down or I'll have some seniority and can take some time off myself.

I found a poor pic of the west side of our property. This pretty much what people see first when they drive by from the west.

That's really nice Lilyfan! :) I love looking at the garden shots everyone posts. They are all so neat!

I just love all of your gardens! I think what I like best and they all have in common is the green grass. Do you all water or do you get enough summer rain to keep things green? Here is a view over a Mak-Leek lily field and across the beautiful brown Willamette valley....

Lots of supplemental watering here, while others are practically up to their ears with rain.

My friends who live out in the country on wells all have nice green lawns (I'm jealous!) I live in a town with close to the most expensive water supply in Oregon, due to a new treatment plant. Last year I renovated my lawn in the spring and set out to water regularly then the heat wave hit in June and lasted all summer. It didn't take me long to see the futility! I quit watering as did many others (probably most). I keep thinking that sometime in the future I will switch to xeric gardening (or move farther north!).

This is what I call my patio garden. Those irises in front are supposed to be there temporarily but it has been 2 years now....

I think birds in the garden are as important as flowers. This is Heckle (yes, there is another named Jeckle), my resident scrub jay, going after a peanut near the patio. The cheeky little guy also comes into the kitchen for peanuts. Trots in, gets it, and trots back out to bury it in a planter.

Laugh, he sounds wonderful!! We just have sparrows- huge quarrelsome flocks of them that live in our pine tree and spiraea bush.
I don't have a garden, but just bits and pieces of a yard :) Thought I'd put them on though, since I enjoyed looking at everyone else's. This is a work in progress. Mainly the progression is wrestling the yard away from spouse and dogs, and trying to squeeze the budget here and there for more plants.

edited to add, nope, I don't weed- green is green, unless I need that spot for something new, then I yank out the weeds

veggie bed opposite left corner (there is one daylily bed inbetween the two and I am putting in a new one this weekend, but they are pretty rough looking yet)
Lower class suburbia at it's finest ;> what can I say- I do love it despite the lack of space

Oh Lillyfan, your yard looks great, as Tony the tiger would say!!!

Another one of our yard. With 10 acres where we live there is lots of room to expand, but have it on good authority THAT I AM NOT TO PUT IN ANY MORE FLOWER BEDS!!
Wonder why??
One of 4 lily beds.

Such beautiful places you all have! Maxine, I especially like those pots on the edges. Maybe if I did that it would save some from the weedwacker.

Lisbon, IA(Zone 5a)

Hyblaean, you got a good start going there! Now, just expand a foot each year and before long you'll have most of the yard. :) You're husband will never notice! LOL Is there more we can see? :)

Pard, What I can see is beautiful, but, I want to see more. :) Please. :)

Max, as per usual your gardens are Grrrrrrrrrreat!! (As Tony the Tiger says) More please. :)

I really enjoy all the pictures too - keep em coming. Great gardens everyone!

Ticker, the expanding a foot a year sounds like what I've been doing - it works!

Ripon, WI(Zone 4a)

Pard - we live outside the city limits and have our own well, but I never water the lawn when it's dry - only the gardens. When it's extremely dry it's always a concern that our well could go dry too so I don't get too crazy with the watering.

(Sue) South Central, IA(Zone 5a)

hyblaean, I love what you are doing. we all have to start somewhere and it looks like you have added color to an otherwise green neighborhood. Just do as ticker said and before long hubby will wonder what happened to the grass! Wandasflowers is the queen of covert widening, she also has a husband and dog.

It took me 10 years to finally decide what to do in my backyard, what a lot of growing years wasted!

Maxine, wonderful, MORE please! I have an acre just south of my gardens, I am going to be able to have about 20 more feetof it and then I have to stop or the horses won't have any room at all.

Pard, looking forward to seeing more. I love grass and never want to be without it. It is a much needed place to rest your eyes so you can appreciate the next riot of color. I don't water I just don't mow short like all my neighbors used to. I've actually converted one of them to mowing longer and the grass handles the stress of our hot dry summers pretty well.I did want to share one of my less appealing areas, but can't find the photo, will go look on the other computer and post it later. I need to get my head out of the sky from all the compliments :-)

Lisbon, IA(Zone 5a)

Oh Lilyfan, we all have those less appealing areas. LOL We're great picture editors, aren't we! :)

Necedah, WI(Zone 4b)

Thank you!! How nice you all are. I'm working on it! Probably won't get much better looking any time soon, but wanted to lower the bar :D I love to see other people's gardens, maybe a peek at my chaos will bring others out who have less than stunning yardens. More pics, please!!

Titusville, FL(Zone 9b)

All the lilies are beautiful!

I had ONE growing... was so thrilled... and during a high wind/rain storm, a garbage can got tossed around and landed on it... snapping it off at the base. It didn't grow back :-(

Keep up the good work!

Western, WI(Zone 4a)

Thanks for all the compliments!!

In my opinion the greatest inventions of the 20th century are the home computer, digital cameras, AND photo editing. That said you won't be seeing much of my old rusty shed and dead lawn...

Thumbnail by pardalinum

Pard, doesn't matter if the lawn is brown or the shed is rusty, what you ARE showing us is very nice. :) More please. :)

(Sue) South Central, IA(Zone 5a)

pard, love your garden, one of the things lacking in my beds is garden art. I love it in others' gardens, but am unsure of how to proceed when it comes to my own. Maybe it is just that I spend all my money on plants.............

This is my garage bed that just doesn't seem to want to do anything but sit there, the other side is growing wonderfully......big lush healthy plants, unfortunately they are weeds, anyone need some ragweed?

I Ihaven't been back here in a few days, Y'all Yankees have some lovely lily gardens.I just got back from a family reunion in Bellevue , Mich. Beautiful lilies everywhere. We have had the worst drought here in 118 years , and mine have done very little. I water endlessly, just to keep things alive.

Willamette Valley, OR(Zone 8a)

llilyfan, you don't have to spend a fortune on "garden art" to come up with stuff that works. I consider it secondary to the plantings, so I look around for areas where things are growing pretty well and tuck it in. Here is an example where I took one of those cheap little miniature "picket" sections from a discount store and used it to form a division of sorts in a very wide bed (about 9 ft wide). It really helps to break it up, rather than just a mass planting. The final touch is some nice Oregon green algae that forms over the winter and a pruning from my pine tree layed across the top for a woodsy look. OK, Martha would probably come up with something better, but not by much! I have some tall lilies on the other side and shorter lilies and other plants and low ground cover in front.

Thumbnail by pardalinum
Willamette Valley, OR(Zone 8a)

Here is another similar example where the bed is 8 ft wide so I want to break that width up. This is a cheap trellis that I layed on it's side and intertwined my neighbor's apple tree prunings on and through it. More woodsy look. The ornamental birdhouse was free, made by a friend.
