Just for kicks ~ this is the first time I've grown Hibiscus. What a brute!

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

Hardy Hibiscus is one of my favorite flowers. The huge flowers are something, aren't they? Which cultivar is that, Moby? It looks like Fireball, maybe. But then mine are nowhere near ready to bloom, so I may have forgotten who was who ;)

(Sue) South Central, IA(Zone 5a)

Looks like I NEED Red Dutch! What an impressive lily.

Wichita, KS(Zone 6a)

Red Dutch is very pretty! note to self - add to want list!

Make sure you give your hibiscus enough room - after the second or third year they fill out very quickly. Also next spring they will be slow to appear. Mine usually came up mid may, last year didnt see them until mid june. We were at the nursery looking to replace it, because it had not shown up. Went the lady at the nursery commented that her had not started either.

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

Yup, they are the last thing to come up. I tell people to wait until June to buy a new one, if they think they lost it, when I am volunteering at the greenhouse.

Braselton, GA(Zone 7b)

RED DUTCH!!! Me tooo...gotta have that one...it is breathtaking!

The one you thought was virus maybe....well it looks like some of the ones we have been talking about on my thread too....most seem to think no....so I am leaving mine till next year, this was their first year, and we have had so many other variables to deal with I think maybe they just are not quite up to parr. So I am not taking mine out....just yet.lol
I am going to spray everything with messenger as soon as I get to go out again...the heat is awful isn't it!

Lisbon, IA(Zone 5a)

Wow, Moby, that Red Dutch is fantastic!!! Where did you get it?

Coral Sunset, I think that it really is Coral Sunset, I almost didn't post that picture cause I thought it was a lousy take on the bloom. It's like the color washed out on the picture, but it's there on the bloom. Probably too bright of sunlight when I took the picture.

What is supposed to be Coral Reef, does indeed look like Tropical Dream and Coral Sunrise. I'm not sure, but it probably came from Gilbert Wild last year. Yeah, I know the lily mantra, "Only buy lilies from people that live and breath lilies." But the garden porn catalogs sucked me in. I'm learning, slowly, but I'm learning. Some of those that look like Coral Reef/Sunset/Tropical Dream, are supposed to be Freedom's Glow. They aren't. I also got some white ones that were supposed to be "Dancing Eyes. They aren't. Again repeat the mantra: "Only buy lilies from people that live and breath lilies."

I sure wish my Leslie Woodriff would have appeared. I'm trying not to stress over it or any other Orientals and such that didn't appear this year...

So, any thoughts on Dolly Madison (if she really is Dolly Madison)? Virus or just lousy weather?

I have several lilies this year, mostly pinks, that look splotchy. My first thought is a vius. However, on the same plant, there can be another bloom that looks perfect. I'm not sure what to do either. I'm hoping it is weather related.

Lisbon, IA(Zone 5a)

Beaker, yeah, I thought I'd watch to see what the next bloom looks like. This is a first year plant, but it came from Gilbert Wild, so.. If the next bloom looks splotchy it's toast, don't need to take the chance. And I can use the spot for a differernt lily. :)

Go Go Godzilla!!! It's so cool! I'm waiting for mine to bloom!! Did you get yours from Buggy?

Ripon, WI(Zone 4a)

Wow! Both Red Dutch and Godzilla are beauties! ...and so is the hibiscus!

Cordele, GA(Zone 8a)

Yes, mine came for Buggy. It sure is a tall one!

Braselton, GA(Zone 7b)

Beauty! Here is my first bloom on Dolly Madison...

Cordele, GA(Zone 8a)

Beautiful color! Wow!

Braselton, GA(Zone 7b)

Thanks Deb, funny thing is I think this was one I ordered to help make the cut in the co-op, it doesn't look that much different to me than the Opening NIght did...

Thumbnail by JanetS
Lisbon, IA(Zone 5a)

Janet, the color is roughly the same, but the petals aren't anywhere close to being alike. So, maybe what I have as Dolly Madison is really Opening Night? Also Janet, I noticed that your Opening Night shows the same blotch marks that mind do.... So, maybe that is normal?

Saint Bonifacius, MN(Zone 4a)

After all these years, I still prefer one of the first strains of hardy hibiscus:
Southern Belle

Consistently growing the largest flowers, and I have pushed seedlings to bloom in the first season, even here in Minnesota.

Braselton, GA(Zone 7b)

Yes, I did notice the petals were different, I certainly like open nights form better...lol You may be right about them being the same as yours as well. I think mine were about half and half as far as the splotching and noone seemed to think it was virus after looking at them on the lily thread..so I am keeping my fingers crossed! LOL

Los Alamos, NM(Zone 5a)

Crimson Pixie, I believe. It has been open for 2 or 3 days now, but more buds to come.

Pajaritomt, ooooh, isn't that pretty!!! :) Keep the pictures coming!

New to me today is

Orienpet Red Hot..

And tada!!!

Dot Com, altho it's a bit mis-shapen. Maybe the next bud will be better formed. :) I have speckles!! :)

My Dot Com looks just like that and the other blooms are somewhat mis-shapen. Many of my lilies have malformations this year, mainly missing anthers or styles. It was a weird spring weatherwise and I lost many seedling buds due to late frosts.

Moby-- That hibiscus is to die for! That is one plant I haven't tried yet.

A few lily pictures to post. This was sold to me as Harlequin strain. Last year it opened splotchy but so far looks normal this year. I am not sure that means it is not virused or maybe the virus just wasn't located in concentration at the point where this year's stem formed within the bulb. Something to keep in mind, assuming that that is a possibility....

The Chris North seedling with one of it's fuzzy buds in the foreground. This one is quite fragrant, showing it's lankongense background.

Finally my first specie pardy from seed. It only took something like 4 or 5 years! But I think I like my redder ones better.

Pastel yellow asiatic seedling-- I think these are all the same as the bulb has divided several times.

Connie, where is Buggycrazy selling now? The only place I have seen her is the Blooming Auction and the only thing she was selling was seeds. Is she still selling lily bulbs?

Western, WI(Zone 4a)

This is what I recd. for Red Dutch from a reputable seller.
Sure doesn't look like Moby's.
any idea what it might be?
Forgot to say that it stands around 4 1/2' tall
