Cukes in an Earth Box

Toledo, OH(Zone 6a)

My first cuke, only 30 days after planting! It is a beaut! The variety is "Bush Whopper". The tag said this variety would take 55 days to mature.

Congratulations! Did you plant from seed and then add the cover? Or did you set out plants? They will be good eating. Enjoy!

Toledo, OH(Zone 6a)

I set out plants. It's all I can do to not eat it now!!!!!

Toledo, OH(Zone 6a)

I also wanted to mention the tag says, and I quote, "Remove over-mature fruits."

Like they even have a chance to become "over-mature"!!!

What are you waiting for? It looks ready to me. And you will have plenty more. :-)

Toledo, OH(Zone 6a)

A few more days...

:)

Post a picture when you harvest it.

Carmel, NY(Zone 6b)

And when you are eating it with that BIG grin on your face!!!

Looks awesome!

Toledo, OH(Zone 6a)

Will comply! Can't take a pic of me, maybe I can use a mirror!!!

Just wanted to share my "staking system" for the earth boxes!

And here's the part just waiting! I did a similar thing last year and no cuke touched the ground! Once, years ago, in a tiny back yard, I used the clothes line!

I posted the tomatoes "staking system" in the tomatoes forum if anyone is curious:

Very clever. I haven't yet figured out how I will stake mine if they actually start to grow.

Sunnyvale, CA(Zone 9b)

Very nice cuke!

Mine aren't even flowering yet - maybe I should bring them your photo and give them a pep talk?

Toledo, OH(Zone 6a)

Definitely, talk to them!

Here's an updated photo of the cuke. This was just taken, only 3 days after the first photo.

Soon, soon!

Oops! Lost a day somewhere! This is 4 days since the first photo!

Toledo, OH(Zone 6a)

Wrong! Don't know why I thought it was the 20th! It is only 3 days.

Southern Mountains, GA(Zone 6b)

I'm tired of waiting, eat that beautiful thing! :-)

Toledo, OH(Zone 6a)

Just give me 2 more days, I promise I'll eat it in two days!!!

Carmel, NY(Zone 6b)

Time negotiate - do I hear one???

Southern Mountains, GA(Zone 6b)

I'm with Sequee, today is the day. The seeds will be too big by tomorrow!

Toledo, OH(Zone 6a)

Nope, I stand steadfast! Tomorrow!!!!

Southern Mountains, GA(Zone 6b)

we're still waiting.....

Toledo, OH(Zone 6a)

Tomorrow, tomorrow!

Carmel, NY(Zone 6b)

Ok, so it's tomorrow and it's lunchtime - what's the hold up here???

Toledo, OH(Zone 6a)

Here it is, a little over 8" long. It was tasty, but still immature, the seeds were tiny. Coulda gone another few days. Too late now!

Burp! Lookin' good!

Southern Mountains, GA(Zone 6b)

Congrats! we're right behind you!

Toledo, OH(Zone 6a)

That was the only cuke of size in the bunch. I'll have to wait a while before I get another I can eat.

Victoria, BC(Zone 8a)

Was that a cucumber that you can eat the skin of?

Funny thing. I just harvested my very first one that's a "burpless" and took it to work - where 3 of us devoured it instantly.

A good cucumber is fabulous!

Toledo, OH(Zone 6a)

You can eat the skin of any cucumber. I always do if it is from a home garden!

Victoria, BC(Zone 8a)

Yes, but these particular ones are known for the tasty and edible skin. Some skins are tougher.

Toledo, OH(Zone 6a)

Here's the next one. It's about 3" long. There are others, but this is the biggest at the moment.

Looking good, again!

Toledo, OH(Zone 6a)

I'm gonna do this one cuke at a time!!! LOL!

Carmel, NY(Zone 6b)

Isn't that the best way? Salivate, enjoy; salivate, enjoy; salivate...

Auburn, AL(Zone 8a)

Sugar Crunch is very good with the skin, skin is tender and the cukes are harvested small, yum yum

Just found another one! It's one of the pickling cukes so about 4" long. I thought about taking it in and taking photos, but said, Nah, and ate it!!! More flavorful than the other!

YUMMY!!!!!

Here's two sisters getting ready...
