Lilies: Ok , Who has Lilies spring out of the ground -PART 2
I was out cleaning off one of my gardens the other night and I found the same lily phenomum that Pard did with the new growth lilies coming up through the old dead hollow stem. Actually, there were quite a few of them doing that and I think they were all Asiatics... Interesting..
Gymgirl, nice lilies. :)
Diann
That one was henryi .
Yep, that's what mine looked like too... I have no idea who mine is.... Anyway, not right now... it's a NOID and so am I (annoyed) cause I lost the tag.
Diann
I have one do that too.
One Marco Polo oriental did that too - noticed it yest.
thank you for the warm welcome moby!! i have been at dave's for a few mths now but yep i'm new to posting to the lily forum although i have been lurking here a bit, lol.
i just got in 22 new lilies in a trade today i'm so excited!! i got in-lilium pink tigers, lilium asiatic hybrid lollypop and gran cru, cancun, unknowns and centerfold. i'm takeing them and the ones i have and makeing a special fairy garden for my 3 year old daughter. out of all my plants they are her favorites and so is tinkerbell, lol so i'm doing it with fairy solar lights, statues and such for her. i love lilies they are tied in 1st place with my amaryllis for my favorite flower. i can't decide which i like better, lol. she is my garden budy every day even in winter sewing so i wanted to do something special for her love and dedication to gardening. what better gift than the gift of gardening and love. i can't wait to get my project done and share pics with ya all! :)

Obviously, I have a bit to learn about Lilium bulb growth. We've all dug up bulbs before, and have seen how the hole that housed the past season's stalk is not in the center of the bulb, but off to the side of the bulb nose. The nose where the new stalk will emerge. So what exactly is happening?
I'd say you all were playing a joke on me, but you have picture proof!
One of these days, it will happen to a lily we don't care too much about, and we'll dig it up to unravel the mystery. Maybe it will be me, although, for the most part I pull my stalks in the fall when the soil is fairly dry.
---- a puzzled Sherleft
Anyone care to expound on the virtues of pulling or cutting dead stalks? I never gave it much though, except making sure the soil is relatively dry. That's what the ol' Cajun did that first taught me about lilies when I was a young lad, so that's what I do.
It would be interesting to see, but not interesting enough to dig up my Marco Polo. They were my first lilies, I think 8 years ago and it took them 5 years to multiply so no digging in that area is allowed. :)
edit: we posted the same time. I cut them off in the fall, then pull the last few inches of stalk off in the spring when it's just about falling off by itself. No idea if one way is better than the other.

The reason for removing the stalks is because they may harbor disease, esp. botrytis. Normally, I cut mine off short in the fall, then remove them in the spring when I start to see new growth. I find that many are not easy to pull out until well into winter anyway.
I'll volunteer to dig mine out for a look-see. Looking at my pics from last year I think they are plain ol' white trumpets anyway...
OK, mystery solved! As you can see, the new growth dived into the old stalk which, being underground at this point, is much softer than the exposed remnant. The exposed remnant is firmer than the part rotting away under the soil line, thus the new growth is guided up through the exposed stalk! I suspect that the new growth entered the old stalk within the bulb, very early on. Sooo.... there you have it!
So you pull the entire old stalk out of the ground? I was looking at an oriental today and found bulblets growing from the old stem. It seems that pulling the whole thing out would hamper multiplication, well if you miss the babies. I thought orientals didn't multiply with bulblets, I found 3-4?
Some lilies multiply faster than others. My very first lily was an unregistered Dutch hybrid (oriental) that had a mess of bulblets the second year. It was called Antonia and now I can't find a source for it:-(
As you can see, this bulb did not produce bulblets; however it does have 2 stems, each came up through the old stem. I didn't pull it all the way out; just enough to locate the bulb and push the clay goo out of the way... All in the name of science!
I am happy to report that I have lilies coming up FINALLY! Spring has been just terrible! Snow, cold, nor'ester! We have had it all. But today is gorgeous out! I am finally getting to cleaning the leaves out of the beds (I use it to winter mulch). The finally chopped stuff stays in the bed, but the twigs and big stuff comes out! this is late for me to do this but the weather hasn't allowed me to get it done. Well, I have lots of lily noses coming up. In particular the martagons are coming up! It is so nice to see old friends poking their way up! YEAH! It is spring in Maine!
Yea! for you!
Out here we're having instant summer. 78° already today. >:(
Instant summer here too, I'm happy as long as we don't hit 18 degrees again. Then I'll be in big trouble.
i had to use the a/c today lol. last time i used it 3 days hit down to 20's that's what got my stuff i'll be in trouble to if it does.
It's cold and raining here..... but that didn't stop me from plant shopping today!
From my previous post #3391701
Given the normal growth of a bulb, I don't see how a sprout inside an old stalk could be possible - unless the sprout decided to enter the stalk above the bulb itself. Very curious, and certainly one for the annals of weirdness.
Score one for Sherleft.
And Pard's right: with the old stalk being soft and rotting, it would be the path of least resistance. Although, I still don't see how a new sprout could find its way through the bulb to the old stalk while still inside the bulb.
(Just wanted to gloat. Shameful, aren't I!)
And thanks must got to the Amazing Pard, for digging up the anomaly, er . . uh, I guess it isn't so unusual after all!
Just checked and a fair portion of the lilies that I planted in the first part April are coming up!
That's good news!
Thank you, kooger of IA. and those that answered my question on Easter lily. Ok, ok, I admit. I'm a gardener and not a carpenter. LOL, don't take me wrong, love the carpenter, especially the master carpenters since they can build such wonderful arbors for us gardeners. :-)
Now that the weather is warming up, whose lilies are blooming, I've a couple of the mix asiatic lilies are unfurling, the rest are still in buds (some haven't even formed buds). Let's see some pics. Shall we?
Kim
If only it was time for my lilies. It will be a while yet.
Here is mine; 1st blooms of the season among others. This one was unintentionally "forced" into bloom early. They were left over bulbs from last year. They survived the harsh treatments. I potted them and left in unheated garage, they sprouted before any of the Tulips even poke their noses off the ground. And voila! They're in full bloom at present.
Kim
Lovely, lilylove.
Lilylove, do you know it's name?? It's very nice. :)
Diann
I don't know its specific cultivar, but perhaps someone here could help us i.d.?
Don't know which one that is but I hope mine are as pretty when they finally do bloom.
Some of my early Orienpet lilies were hit hard by April icy weather--I don't know if they will reappear. On the other hand, most of my lilies have broken ground except the Cockers I planted last fall (Minnesota hybridizers) and the bulbs I popped in this spring from the Lily Society Bulb sale, B&D, etc.
I sprayed them with Plantskydd before we took off on our motorcycle trip last week and prayed: http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/716511/
I came back to unmolested, healthy lilies. WIll the bunnies leave me alone this year??? And the dogs hadn't broken any off while I was gone--miracle of miracles....
Don't get too comfortable.... ;) It's a long time till bloom... LOL
Question for all you pro's......
I have a oriental lily coming up right beside the foundation, so close in fact that it won't be able to clear the sideing on the house. It's up about 4-6"...can I move it now?? if I do move it will it still bloom?
It'll be OK. Just dig very carefully around it (go wider than youthink), take a big scoop of soil so you don't disturb the roots and it won't miss a beat.
awesome!! Thank you sooo much!!!!!!!
And be really careful that you find the bulb without hitting it. It's surprising how far from the stalk it can be sometimes.
Just a guess but that looks like "Triumphator" look here and see what you think.
