I'm helping a friend with her back yard (Z5) she would like to plant some tall grasses. I have very little knowledge of grasses, since my thought is they need sun. The only grass I could think of is Hakonechloa and that's a short one. Are there others that are tolerant of shade?

Suggestions for grasses that would do well in shady setting.
Chasmanthium latifolium is about the tallest grass which will grow in shade in zone 5. It'll hit 4'+ to the seedheads as long as it has moist soil. It's sometimes called Northern Sea Oats, or Wild Oats. It'a a very nice bamboo-looking plant.
If it's less than full shade, like light shade or part shade, there are lots of other choices. Take a look at the comparative chart at Bluestem.

Donn, Thanks that is an excellent chart.
I would say the area she is looking at is part shade.
Some how I posted a duplicate thread, which I had the administrations of DG remove, I am sorry for the confusion and to those who posted to the other thread. If I remember correctly they were in agreement about the suggested grass.
