Just thought I would share some of what I will be planting this summer. I think Atom is one of my all time faves. In case the picture comes up with the names not readable, the one on the left is Far West, then Shu, and Atom. Can't wait till summer!

I've ordered a few specials from Great Western Gladiolus, I asked them if they would have the ones I wanted but they can only guarantee two of them, Violetta and Chartreuse Ruffles. The others I will get if the suppliers come up with them, Hint O'Mint and Moonshadow.
I named some substitutes just in case, Nori, Bluebird and Flevo Bambino which are cheaper but still nice.
Now I am pulling at the leash for Atom, and some others! I have been sent a catalogue for the last 3 years at least and never bought from it, a bulb company not far from me. There are Dutch growers settled on the Norfolk fens. They offer vouchers and gifts, I have resisted because I really didn't want anything they had enough. I received two catalogues running, the first offering a cordless phone, the second offering a £5 voucher and a fleece jacket for spending £10! Postage is low, so I really don't think I can hold off any longer!
Their bulb size for Atom is 10-12cm, which I think is good as they are a primulinus variety which I think are smaller. What size are yours?
They also have other mixes, 200 mixed smaller 8-10cm for £9.99, there might be some gems in those! At £0.05 each , less than 10 cents, a bargain! They are offering 50 size 14cm for £7.95, I need help!

I love growing glads but haven't ordered any for this new place. Love the pics posted above.
Last summer a few bloomed in a yucca I plan to take out, so yesterday I dug around in there a bit. Came up with about 2 dozen neglected bulbs just in one small area. I'm guessing maybe twice that many more remaining. Now I need to find a spot for them but not a showy spot. I cut my glads at the first sign of color and bring them into the house. My beloved grandfather always did that and it gives me warm fuzzies to see cut glads in a vase.

I agree glads in a vase are beautiful, but never cut the ones I grow, I don`t think I could LOL
Yes, 90% of them look fine, just a couple of mushy bulbs... to my surprise as most glads aren't hardy here.
do you know the name? it would be nice to know, there is so much work when it gets colder.
If a few could stay in the ground would help very much.
I have no idea of names, seems like there were just 2-3 colors. I'll post pics when they bloom this year and maybe someone will know.

I happened to stop by Cornelius nursery on the way home from work yesterday. I seldom buy plants there, but I always stock up on Espoma (soil sulfur, holly tone, plant-tone, bulb-tone, flower-tone organic products and bat guano) for the year before they run out. They had glads the same brand you have pictured. I must admit, I picked up a bag of 'Summer Nights' 35/$5.99 good price and the quality of the bulbs was good too. We shall see how they do--no great loss if they don't do that well.
I think I just got them planted on the last date we can plant them down here. I put them out front, I like real ordinary, not very valuable plants out there to basically hide my business in my backyard. I think they will be pretty.

Hi Debbie-- I agree with putting the cheap ones out front. They still put on a nice show. Last year someone invited themselves to my hyacinths out front, a nice clean cut through all of them!
I think I will pay another visit to the nursery where I bought these glads today and see if they have any more in. It's also time to get out and do my caladium shopping, they are on sale here now!
I bought a pack of 10 Black Jack 12-14cm at the garden centre, then at the supermarket they had packs of 25 huge corms, mixed colours, the corms were different colours too. Some are a wine colour, they were a good price at £1.99, less than $4, and I would say over the 14cm size for many, the size wasn't listed on the pack.
It's spring here today, more to do outside! I'll se if I can get a pic later.

I'm going to have to go mail order for glads next year or catch a good co-op:LOL: I never seem to find any of the cool, not your everyday color ones:) I've not purchase any in a few years for that reason.
I do have a white (prosperity) and a red that have overwintered amongst the bearded iris rhizomes for the past 10 years. I tried removing them once and didn't manage to get them all so I just left them. I was cleaning up the bed a bit last summer and found one mama corm that was almost disintigrated but had about 50 little babies all around the base of the corm. I went out to clean the bed out today and there are tiny blades of glad leaves popping up everywhere throughout the iris bed:)
Giant flowering mix, I stripped the skins off. Some shoots are going sideways, I hope they straighten!
They need planting, the warmth has made them sweat a little, sat in boxes in the supermarket but they are firm.
The skins around the shoots shine like silk, aren't they pretty!

What a shame eith the hyacinths, but better them than the more dear ones in the back yard. Some people have to much nerve.

Was just in my basement and saw that my nova lux is sprouting!
They are about 1.20 to 2.30 inches, now ….what do I do?
It is getting warmer here, should I just plant them and hope April (can be very temperamental) will show mercy this year?
Monica, I would plant the Nova Lux, we are going to have around 12C for the next 10 days, so they say, if they are growing already they will establish quickly. You should have similar weather!
If the weather turns bad in April, and we always get some snow in early April, it usually doesn't last for long. The bulbs will suffer if left trying to grow without soil anyway.
I hope Black Jack is true to colour, I tried some smaller bulbs once before but they didn't flower, these I intend to put half or all in pots.

The yellow and white one is called Laurita. Can you all tell I am partial to the bicolor glads?

I will try & answer all I read. Glads are probably hardy in SE part of the country. They will freeze, but if deep enough in the ground you would be OK.
Any of the glads in your pictures marked Low Growing would be border glads, which only means short.
They will grow up straight after planting. The ones going sideways were laying on edge. You don;'t need to take the skin off.
I know there is a big grower & bulb supplier in NC. I spent 10 minutes looking for web site, but couldn't come up with it. Does anyone know the name ?
Our big box lumber store, Menards, has mixed glads for $4.79 a pack of 50. Nice size too. They will have them on sale soon. Also other bulbs at same price. Package size vary by type of bulb. All very reasonable.

Yes Bernie, I imagine the sideways ones will grow up straight, but there was only a loose damp skin on most of them so I decided to have fun. I wanted to see the colours! Now if I had 25,000 to plant, that would be different!

I came across that logo on another search. It said the company was out of business. could be.
We order once from a company that added the shipping to the price of the bulbs. Shipping was just about the same as the bulb price. Bulbs were $60 per 1000, shipping was $55 to $60 a box.
Bernie, DJ's is the company where I bought the glads for the glad co-op I hosted several years ago. They were in Horseshoe, NC not far from Asheville. They went out of business the next year.
I guess 1,000 bulbs were heavy!

Hi Janet, yes I think you are right, the bulbs would probably suffer if they are not planted.
Will do it tomorrow hopefully, I am coming down with a influenza it seems, like half of the country at the moment :o(((

They are very pretty colours, never seen those combination here.
DH bought some glads yesterday, no name on them though, it just says "white".
They have a bit of purple stripes in the middle, will have to post a photo when it blooms.

The "nova lux" will plant them later today. Amazing how much they have grown when they were in the cellar.

I haven't seen the white/purple striped one, I looked through the saved sites with pics to be sure, it must be a special one. It certainly looks special, the purple is so vivid, can't wait to see how it turns out! Your DH has good taste.

DH does not know much about plants, but said that this one looked like the other ones I had bought, and that he could se I did not have this one. Almost feel down my chair, I think I have underestimated him, seems that he listen to all my plant babble afterall.

I have some glads I want to plant. I got this out of a Jerry Baker Flower Book. Have any of you done this? If so has it worked?
Beauty Bath for Bulbs
An hour or two before you plant your bulbs, soak 'em in this mixture to get 'em clean and ready to grow. Just don't peel off the papery skins, The bulbs use them as a defense against pests.
2 tsp baby shampoo
1 tsp antiseptic mouthwash
1/4 tsp instant tea granuals
Mix all of these ingredients together in 2 gallons of warm water. After your bulbs are planted dribble any leftover beauty bath on the soil around your evergreen tress and shrubs.
Let me know if any of you have done this. Is it worth going and getting these things?
