Just A Croc
SDBs
Wow thanks! I got a bunch of SDB's last summer, just planted a big bed of iris to get them established and see what's what. I like Laurie's suggestion of a rock garden...I can do that!
Hoodlum is very cool.
I have a very rocky front yard -- a nature created rock garden. As I add soil to the crevices naturally there, I will certainly look at Hoodlum and Plum Wine. I am only limited by the speed of the earthworms working on my compost pile.
If you like the purples, you should add Little Episode to one of those crevices. It's extremely prolific and floriferous. It puts on a grand show for me every year without fail.
I had no idea there were so many SDB's...OK...now for the dumb question: Those aren't all blooming NOW for you are they? If so, when were these great pictures taken? I have a few older un -named varieties in bloom now...mainly just dk. purples and whites...
Can you suggest a good source for the ones you have?...or did I miss that, too? I was too captivated by your great pictures!
The beautiful photos in this thread are just a tiny glimpse into the world of SDBs. In fact, SDBs are the second most widely hybridized of all the iris types, second only to TBs. In 2005, 728 new TB were registered (57.4% of all 2005 registrations), followed by 206 SDB (16.25%), followed by 74 Sib, 68 IB, 38 LA, 28 BB, 23 JI, 21 SPU, 17 MTB, 17 SPEC, 17 SPEC-X, 14 PCN, 11 MDB, and 6 AR/AB.
It always helps if I hear how well a plant grows. I will look for Little Episode when the catalogs come out. I do need good performers because my situation is very attractive, but needs sturdy plants.
No these are not blooming now just showing all different types of iris besides TB

This could very easily lead to another form of addiction !!!
JasperDale, I don't know what sort of winter climate you have out there in Long Beach, but many of the SDBs require a pretty good winter chill in order to bloom well. Your best luck would probably be in choosing SDBs hybridized in a climate similar to yours.
Laurie
Laurie is right about SDB's needing a long good winter chill in order to bloom well. Here is Arizona where I live - - they won't bloom at all (except for the first year AFTER coming from a Very Cold Climate.......... so that first year bloom is really related to and due to the cold factor it formally was growing in). They will increase well here, but not bloom.
Anita, .................... I can't get over all the lovely SDB photos you have. Mesmerizing, and enchanting irises!!

Thanks Margie
Have you ever thought of Ice blocks
might not be practical but might be worth it
:)
Anita
This could BE why I don't see too many of them around here!
Well, I have plenty of cold in the winter. I will definitely purchase some SDB's for my front terraced beds, as I add soil to them. These SDB's sound like just what the doctor ordered for my front yard.
While in southern CA I used to have tons of medians...they bloomed well but every time there was ice from drinks we dumped that on the little ones. Since I have loved these guys forever it was not a job, but a pleasure, also they were planted in part sun...not full sun.
