Mother-in-law tounge plant (or snake plant)

Des Moines, IA(Zone 5a)

Mother-in-law tounge plant (or snake plant) ... I've heard it called both and I dont know the correct plant name BUT it appears to be blooming?? It has sent up a couple of skinny stalks with tiny little white flowers on it, I wish I could take a pic but my camera batteries need re-charged. I've had this plant for years but I've never seen it send up flower stalks, I'll try to post a pic after work tonight. Maybe these stalks are from another plant life from when it was on our deck over the summer? I dont know. Its indoors now because of winter.

Sansevieria is the latin name. They do bloom given the right conditions. They also have some fragrance.

Aren't the blooms fun. When you least expect it! It is as hcmcdole stated as Sansevieria, but which one? http://davesgarden.com/pf/adv_search.php?searcher%5Bcommon%5D=sanseveria&searcher%5Bfamily%5D=&searcher%5Bgenus%5D=&searcher%5Bspecies%5D=&searcher%5Bcultivar%5D=&searcher%5Bhybridizer%5D=&search_prefs%5Bsort_by%5D=rating&images_prefs=both&Search=Search&searcher[common]=Sansevieria
Would love to see your photo.

My small one has a bloom stalk on it. They bloom but not with regularity.

SW, WI(Zone 4b)

Yeah! Would love to see the photo, too.

Both my S. parva and S. species L&B bloomed recently.
I've had Sansevierias for years and this is the first year any of mine have had blooms. The S. parva was outdoors over the summer and the Sp. L&B is always in my south window.
The parva's blooms were *very* fragrant!

I have a thread on this forum somewhere with a photo (though not a very good photo, sorry!)

Yes, sansevierias will bloom if happy. The flowers are like tiny lilies. You can search in the plant files for Sansevieria (the most common is S trifasciata laurentii), there are bound to be some photos of flowers there.

These are among my most favorite plants :)

Nan I saw your thread... How exciting and then two days ago, I looked at my S. parva to find a bud! Thought of you... This photo is a close up so doesn't show the small size of the plant. Don't know if it is so but mine blooms better when root bound. pod

Wow, ok - judging by Podster's flower I'm not sure if mine is from my plant or a volunteer from the "out on the deck" days .... I had to get hubby to do the camera batteries (I could'nt open the battery cage) but if they're charged by the time I leave for work I'll post a pic. The bloom stalks on mine are quite 'skinny' & flowers are like tiny little lillies, but Podsters bloom is 'huge' compared to my plant.

Ok, edited to say - the flowers look like a pic from this DG person's (kniphofia) posting from the link that podster
sent. But we have just 2 skinny stalks. Amazing.

The blooms on the flower stalk haven't opened yet. It is a small sans and I got close up and personal with the camera. This link is to this plant in my journal. http://davesgarden.com/journal/j/viewentry/110020/

The sans will all bloom differently. BTW which sans did you have? Looking forward to a photo... pod

And here is a pic of the plant, can you tell me which Sansevieria I have? I have no idea, I've had this plant I think for about 15 years.

here's another pic of another flower stalk - still blurry (sorry) seems like the little flowers are drying up already - so I'm guessing I should cut the stalk down? Thanks, Jill

You will know better, but I think this is the one you have... http://davesgarden.com/pf/go/431/index.html
and your bloom is normal, check out this link... http://davesgarden.com/pf/showimage/2911/
I don't think I would cut it back unless it is too messy, smelly or ugly. Although I don't save seed, I would let it die and dry on its' own.

Very pretty plant you have and after 15 years, I am sure it is one of the family... : )) pod

Cool, yes those links look like what I have, so - its a "Sansevieria trifasciata" , Thanks for the links.

If you're not hooked yet, I am sure others can show you more photos and we'll tempt you. : )) pod

I would need to get a bigger house to get 'hooked' , LOL, I dont have alot of room for plants indoors dring the winter months. They're all pretty cool. Looks like you have quiet a few. Thanks for the show!

Deep East Texas, TX(Zone 8a)

Now where near enough... : )). The great thing about Sans is they don't require much care, little water or light necessary. Especially in winter.

Anyone know this variety? It was in Thailand.

That is a 'great' one. I love the pattern of it and the size is magnificent. How tall are your plants?
