Since I am always so excited to see people doing what they love to do, especially when it comes to gardening. There is a new business out there, by one of our own, that I want to share with you, if you don't already know about it. Some really unusual varieties of lilies that I, for one, am pretty excited about. This is what wish lists are made for....
I wish our 'lily friend ' the best of luck in her new business venture. Doing what you love can be so rewarding. I'm thrilled for her.
Faraway Flowers
Check it out...

A wonderful lily adventure
How wonderful!
Hmmm who is the mystery store owner? Mainiac d-mailed me about it but didn't say any more.
If you poke around the website, you'll see. Seems to me you have the right idea.....
The Canadian end to the url threw me off :*)
O, ok it is the same service as Buggycrazy. I thought it looked familiar.

I love how you can keep track of what you've previously ordered. It's one of the best features the site has. So, the choice of web hosts was a good one, in my opinion.
What did you think of the selection?? Wow.
Other than the oriental doubles, I didn't see too much that was interesting and I thought the pricing was overly expensive. I did note that many of the bulbs were large sized, but after planting out many of the Buggy Crazy bulbs this fall, I'm not too keen on those huge honkers. There is something to be said about letting smaller bulbs settle in and mature.
I also wonder about how many of these are actually registered. I have a henryi hybrid called Madam Butterfly and it doesn't look like the one listed at Faraway Places. I certainly wouldn't pay 22.00 for it. I also noted that the ones I had the most interest in didn't have information on height and bloom size. Parentage would also be nice to know.
I think I'll sit this one out for awhile and see how it evolves, but everyone else have a good time. I'm sure I'll be envious when I see pics of your gardens next summer.
I guess we are all different in what makes us tick. Buggy Crazy's bulbs are some of the most amazing bulbs I have ever seen. Planting was a bit more involved.
I agree the prices are a bit high, but some of the items are pretty unique. Those double orientals are gorgeous.
What can I say, but I'm a sucker when it comes to lilies. ( Beak, your checkbook will thank you :0).
More than likely some of my money will end up going to Faraway Flowers. I've got to settle back and see what all I have coming and then, well, the addiction will rule. :)
Diann
I thought the prices were right in line with the going new kinds. I plan to order but I have lilies everywhere and am not sure where I can safely dig another hole until they start coming up again in spring. LOL!
Suzy
Yes, there are some expensive ones such as 3 Nymph for $35 but B&D is selling them 3 for $37.85, so it's not so bad. Besides, where else can you get them?? As with any other plant, the unique are usually more expensive until they become more common.
I love that Madame Butterfly! ~ so much more than the henryi type.
I too loved that Madame Butterfly...the colors are gorgeous. I enjoy the unique looks to a lot of what she has. The more unique your varieties, the more you can charge, it seems. For example, look at the Lily Garden's new ones, $30 for one new variety. Faraway Flowers has some really nice lilies there and you can't find most of them elsewhere....yet.
Most of all, how fun for her to do this. A lily lover doing what she loves. I hope it (the business) works out. Fun.
Just took another peek at the Faraway Flowers website and noticed some new lower prices on varieties in the OT category. Some of the multiple buy items seem to be a pretty good buy.
Spring is just around the corner (at least that's what I keep telling myself.......) Longer days ahead, very soon....

I logged onto faraway flowers (or so I thought...) and checked my cart and it was EMPTY!! I had been playing around with it (put something in, take something out) since the site went up. Weird... So I logged off (or so I thought...) figuring I would have to start over when I had time (meaning after I sorted out beaker's lily seed request). Then I tried again... enter email address, enter password, click on Cart Contents.... EMPTY!!! So I log off (or so I thought..) and started over one more time. Hmmm.... it says I have entered wrong password or wrong email address. So I very carefully entered my password, surely I entered it right.... click on cart contents...EMPTY! OK after thinking real hard on this and slapping myself up the side of the head, I finally figured it out! I was entering my password for BUGGYCRAZY!! I'm sure there is a moral to this story; probably having something to do with lily addiction and too many sources and passwords!
By the way, all of the lilies listed under Japanese Hybrids are orienpets, not trumpet lilies. I find the pink ones unusual and of course I am wondering about their fertility. I think I will try one or two out.
Pard, you are too funny. Since the sites are by the same company, who could blame you? Right? I have a cart saved myself on Faraway Flowers, that way I can remember what peaked my interest when I go to order later.
I do agree with you on both counts, the pink ones (OTs) are interesting and there are WAY too many passwords in this life. Good thing you figured it all out.
To begin the New Year I went to my favorite lily sites and noted a couple things. B&D Lilies has their new listings up and ready to go , along with the list they are bring to the Seattle Home & Garden Show, any of you lucky enough to get to that.

Also worthy of mention is Faraway Flowers has lowered their prices. I hadn't been to the site for a few weeks and was pleasantly surprised that I will be ordering some more from them. The double orientals went down about $6 per one, which is great for me, wanting to try a named variety of them.

Cruising the classified ads today only to notice a nice surprise! Faraway Flowers has a new incentive for ordering. There are now, not only lower prices, but free bulbs if you order before Valentine's Day for amounts $30 and up. The freebies are unique varieties too. I know what I am getting myself for Valentine's Day, oh, I mean DH is getting me that. Lol! The classified ad is here
http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/688078/
and I think it links to the website.
Oops, don't order before Feb. 1st or you won't get the freebies! Ugh, I've been bit by the lily bug....not again! Lol!
I'm going to try to behave myself until after our Lily Society sale in March. I always find a bunch there I want to buy. I'm trying to add more species bulbs now too.
I too look forward to the PNWLS sale in February, but many of these at Faraway Flowers I know they won't have in the sale. My favories are the double orientals and The Japanese Hybrids. Oh how I do look forward to summer blooming 2007.
If only I could get my hands on some more North Hybrids, strange they are so hard to find, with only the Lily Garden carrying them.
Remember the McRae seedling bulbs I had that actually turned out to be North seedlings that McRae was propagating? Well I interpollinated them and collected a whopping 7 seeds. So far 3 of them have germinated and of course I am hoping for more. Will keep y'all posted on the progress!
Oh yes, I do remember that, Pard. Please keep us posted. What an exciting turn of events for you. How were you able to figure that out? I have forgotten that part of it.
Wanda, Don't forget if your regional sale doesn't do it for you, the last date to order from Faraway is March 15th. I think the goal is to ship everything to everybody all at the same time. I'm hoping they get enough orders to keep this going for a Fall 2007 shipment as well as into the future. You guys know me, the enabler, I just had to "help" by placing an order for my favorites, Geisha Girl, Madame Butterfly, Maywood, oh and think of my future scaling activities! I still think this is a wonderful adventure, one I hope they find successful. It's kind of cool, don't you think?
Don't forget the Faraway Flowers Valentine's Day special.. :)
I already remembered with a sizeable order. Those Japanese Hybrids were too much to pass up. Thanks for the reminder...only 1 week left ;0)
Ticker, tell me , what's on your wish list?
I got:
Belladonna
Mambo
Exotic Dancer
Cecil
Ebony
The Japanese hybrids were nice, but a bit steep for me right now... ;) Maybe later, tho. Good lord, I wasn't going to buy anything until I had re-arranged my hosta beds. However, I blew through that before Christmas. Now I need to slow myself down a bit..
Diann
Your list is great! Good for you. It will be fun comparing these "exotics" this summer and these dark orientals are some of my favorites too, so of course, Mambo was first on my list!
Yep, I ordered all of those too and had a devil of a time deciding between the 'Exotic's. Had to have that Japanese 'Madame Butterfly'.
OK, I succumbed, but I was very restrained seeing as I already have huge orders in with TLN and B&D. I haven't even gotten to the Lily Garden yet. I ordered three each of Angelique, Tiger Woods, Giaconda and Salmon Star. I plan to scale out completely the bonus bulb for Love Story and partially for Pink Heaven. Angelique will go into cold storage for house pot planting in the fall.
We should all think about doing some scale trading this year. I'm picking up some more Asiapets, LOs and some of the more interesting bulbs that I'm drawn to and plan to do more scaling than last year. It's so easy to do.
I love scaling! It has ben so fun learning all of this since joining Daves. Most of what I got from Faraway Flowers will be scaled a bit before planting. Beak & Moby, your lists are great too! It's neat to see the difference in tastes here. Then , of course, there's me thinking, after my order, and now looking at you all's, hmmmmmmmmmmmm maybe I should add this or that.
Two of my favorites from Moby and Beak's picks are Madame Butterfly & Giaciondo (the shading in those are lovely!)
Scale trading sounds fun! I think I'm a scalaholic! Lol!
Bloody bunnies! Arrrghhh,
The Dutch rarely care about the names and the Lily Registry. There are several out there with the same name. Mona Lisa comes to mind. One is an Asiatic and one is an Oriental.
Does Faraway sell Madame Butterfly? I really like that one! -- They don't have a "search feature" and have no Aurelians listed, so it's not easy to ascertain.
Suzy
Faraway Flowers sells a "Madame Butterfly" , but it is not the same one that many of us are familiar with. Here it is. It's beautiful. I don't mind having two "Madame Butterfly" Lilies in my garden. :)
http://farawayflowers.vstore.ca/product_info.php/pName/madame-butterfly-2
Oh yeah, I might mention, 3 days left for the sale.
Yes Wanda, yours is the registered Madame Butterfly. I suppose the easiest way to differentiate is to refer to the unregistered as " 'The Japanese' Madame Butterfly".
: ) Well, registered or not...I've ordered that beauty! ; ) Beve
The colors in that are stunning, not that the registered one isn't lovely, but the "Japanese Madame Butterfly" looks not only to have gorgeous coloring, but huge flowers. Unique in its own right.
Faraway does have a search feature. It's called "Quick find" on the left of every page.
