On the Spaceshipp PRODOFFPARD...
Bump bump bumpity bump....I say Chumbucket could you check the altitude meter? It sure seems bumpy here. Probably just space junk....... WHAT!!!! WE'RE ENTERING THE ASTEROID BELT???? Well get Cap'n Slappy to turn this bucket of bolts around for crying out loud..... By the way, Chum. Where did you put Watson?... Well, that's a good place, on the bilge deck with the glorywhatsit. Strange what you can pick up in a wormhole isn't it. Stranger yet a Watson look-a-like android was left behind. Being an android it won't have any memories....
The Dawning of... Part 2...
Oh, I must have just woken up!
What HAS happened in the last few days???
I seem to have no memory............let me just gather my thoughts...............
llilyfan, you SHOULD be afraid to post on this thread! There is no telling where you will end up (and not remember where you were).
OT: are these TCs? Am I supposed to put my TC parvum hallidayi in the fridge-- I just potted it up from the test tube....
Are you asking ME??????????? I was told to pot up and let grow anything that was showing top growth (green), and to put anything that wasn't showing color in the refridgerator for 6 to 8 weeks.
My L.parvuum hallidayi (1 tube) were growing like crazy in the test tubes and so they have been potted up and growing since July (on a shady porch) and is dying back naturally. Both L. brownii (1 tube) and L. gloriosoides (2 tubes) showed no sign of green so went in the refridgerator.
Gloriowhatzit had a really bad case of contamination in the tubes and I was told to wash them as best i could and to pot them and then stick them in the fridge. Looks like one tube didn't fair well.
Now where was I going??????????????????
Are you sure you don't want to cover - read zip up in baggie - pots going into frdge? They will dry out so quickly.
Be very careful that they don't dry out and then you might over water. Be sure to keep apples etc. (ethlene) out of your fridge. inanda who needs warmer room for baggies of scales. Just hate turning on the heat. To me it means winter is here, not even winter is coming. Wearing longjohns today and unpacked the electric blanket.
inanda
Indeed, you are hardy soul, inanda. I just turned on my heat two days ago. I thought I was the last one! At least I am sure I am for us wimps around here. The lightest of snow flurries yesterday was enough to almost make a driver in front of me spin out last night.
Well, Wallaby, I guess I have some unencouraging news: your gloriosoides (drip) pollen didn't take on my rubrum. I must say that contributing factors may have been that only flower left when I received the pollen may not have been very receptive anymore, and it was crappy weather. Rainy for a week after, and predictions of no change in the weather pattern. So on the non-gloomiest day I could find, I did the deed. Silver lining? Some of your pollen is frozen for next year.
I forgot to say they were in baggies in the fridge. I even kept parvuum loosely tented while it was outside. The pots are so small and do dry out so quickly so covering is really important. I am so new to this part of the lily venture it is a new learning experience almost every day!
lilyfan, you do look to have 2 very nice little babies there!
My Gloriowhatsits (caught that drip!) is dying back now, in a couple of weeks I MIGHT look at the bulb and see if I can do surgery!
Leftwood, worry not, it's a heart warming thought to have pollen spread across the globe! I might try it on my rubrum next year too, nothing to loose!
I'll be moving them under lights pretty soon. In the window it is a feast or famine situation with the sunshine. We won't even mention the drying and baking that can take place if one is forgetful...
I say lilyfan, do we need to bring in 'Operation Goriowhatsits Rescue Plan'??
And out of the Great Pumpkin Patch arose.......the foursome bandits , here to rescue the Fearsome Fighters Guard. They make look small, but they pack with a punch. The size is all a ploy to distract the opposition & it has worked out very well. They travel quickly in their flying saucer basket and ...... grab the Fearsome Fighters Guard, and back to patrol they go. No mighty catnip (not even Maxnip) can stray these from their job.
They are simply adorable! And it is quite clear that two of them have exception powers.
Oh, kitties!!!! Look at that little tongue!
Aaaaaack!!!!! Capt'n Slappy!!!!!! Back to tthe asteroid belt!!!! I am sooooo scared! We're doomed forever now!
(They really are soooo cute!)
They have the powers of the good..........
I WANT them in my Fearsome Fighters Guard!
They have the powers to melt you..........
The PRODOFFPARD has been saved!!! The Fearsome Fighters Guard has been thwarted by the Mighty Evildoing PRODOFFPUSS who smites her enemies with her wicked eyes and bad breath.. Slap! Back to Earth! Hard right and another hard right... That should get us turned around... who needs a compass he he... Chumbucket you idiot.... keep ray, er Watson down in the bilge you dumbo... we may need to ransom him...
Well here are my first seedlings sprouting. I am wondering what the best temp. for growing is? Also if all of the seeds don't germinate can the seedlings be removed and the rest put in the fridge, or would moving the seedlings damage them? Is 2 weeks the most I should wait for a seed to germinate (asiatic) before I consider it compost? I have about 7 germinating out of 80 after 12 days. I have 52 watts of 6500K compact fluorescent on the seedlings at the moment. Without the lights the basement is about 60-65F when they are under the lights it is about 79F. This is fun but I have a lot of questions :*).
Good day,
Andrew
I would just leave them under the lights. Most germinate within 3 weeks. It really varies depending on the genetics. I just had a yellow henry seed come up after 6 months. Since I didn't want to disrupt the 4 seedlings that had already come up, they were all left in the baggie.
Can you lift the lights a little? Most seeds of any kind like warmth to germinate then just a little cooler to grow on. I just love seeing those little green "loops" appear.
The fastest lily seeds that I have germinated were L. pumilum var. "Yellow Bunting". Three days!!
I would leave them as they are and wait for more to germinate and grow on. My seeds sprinkled in pots tend to look like grass. When I plant them out I usually plant the entire clump and only space them properly the following fall.
They def. germinate better in the warmth. 79F or so is almost perfect for many seeds.
inanda
In fact that is what Ruth and Hugh Cocker do too: when they have a pot of Asiatic seedlings ready to go into the garden, they plant the whole pot (without the actual pot, of course). Hugh says the little seedlings are too fragile and you'll get better survival without any drastic disturbance of the roots. Disturbance that would have to happen if you tried to pull the seedlings apart. Interesting, by the end of the season, the tiny bulbs have pulled themselves apart. The initial spears that come up the following spring will be much farther apart than the original pot.
So Pard, if I got those yellow henry seeds from Buggy, should I start them now? Or wait?
I started mine this early so I could grow them under lights over winter and come March or so put them in the fridge. I will have them out in time for another season by May, I think :*I What can I expect for a growing season under 16-20 hours/day of light?
Good day
McRae says Lilium henryi is best sown fresh. But germination is categorized as immediate, which means you would have to grow them under lights like Intercessor because they will send up leaves the same season. If you don't want to do that, then wait and plant them in the spring, and put the seeds in the frig or freezer for now.
I have grow lights that I use for my orchids. I haven't had good luck directly sowing outdoors. I just don't want to wreck these. I can wreck stuff without even trying :0)
I start all of my immediate lily seeds in late January/ early February. I start orientals and martagons now from old seed in the freezer since I haven't harvested the current crop of seed yet. I'll start the pardies when the temperature here cools a bit more, then I'll store their baggie out in my shop. I guess I'm just not interested in keeping leafed out lilies growing over the winter. Winter will be a time to kick back with a good book and sip a bit of Oregon pinot before the insanity starts over again...
Intercessor-- keep us informed on how your babies are doing and when they first bloom. Watch out you may get addicted to growing lilies from seeds!
Indeed I may become addicted. It is exciting to pollinate and then grow to see what happens, although the waiting part is kind of frustrating :*) Hmmm 3 years maybe? Since I have been laid off I need something to keep myself busy, how about watching lily grass grow? The bright lights will help me cope with the short Wisconsin sunlight...
Here is my new setup in the upstairs bathroom, the basement gets down to 45F in the winter so my DW allowed me to use this space. Bless her.
Intercessor, you are so lucky to have a DW that allows you to do that! And such a posh set-up too! I see you use the plastic fruit/tomato tubs that I use too! They are perfect for growing in!
pard, I have some lily seed I got from lilyseeds (I couldn't stand the tension of not being able to grow them!), crosses mostly, I have had 3 germinate. 2 were L. monadelphum, they have had green grass for a while and look like they will be dying back soon, but they do have tiny bulbs sat on the surface. The others are Western American crosses, so I think I will be OK to leave them in my garage under a south facing window. I just get worried when I read of people growing them under lights, something I haven't heard of here, but perhaps our winters are not so bad. And they were so generous, I bought 4 packets and got 8!
PRODOFFPUSS is Sooooooooooo wicked! But we have a whole lot of wicked Loyal Guardian Army converts! I'll bet a tickle on that tummy will convert him too!
Just look at my L. philipinnense/poilanei/gloriosoides-pollen-smeared seed pod! It's 4.75" long (tape not at top), and getting fatter, pray to the lily gods for mild weather!
Intecessor:
And such a posh set-up too!
A little Bach should round it off.
Seriously, I hope that will be enough light without burning them up. I need to remember to ask you later on how it is going.
wallaby: PRODOFFPUSS says "tickle me once shame on you, tickle me twice and I'll BITE" CHOMP! (I'm not kidding, either)
There is a lady here in my area who converted her upstairs bathroom to a tissue culture/embryo rescue lab. Just goes to show how useful an upstairs bathroom can be!
Mighty Evildoing PRODOFFPUSS against the Loyal Guardian Forces? Ya don't stand a chance! Especially since the flying basket came out of the pumpkin patch. Maxnip and your guy is outta there.
Hehehehehe
Hmm, I only have an upstairs bathroom! The spare bedroom is overloaded in winter though!
Oh Pard, you have no idea just what luring powers I have over Pussy Pies. I was a cat in my previous life, and am now the Mother of all cats, (that's what I tell people anyway!). There has been more than one occasion where the owners of a cat have insisted that their pussy will NOT go to anyone else! They ALWAYS come to me, I just will them to and they can't resist! No kidding!
Yes I am lucky. :*) She wants me to have a hobby to keep me busy in the winter. Though once they are planted there is not much to do but wait.
The lights are compact fluorescent @ 26 watts so the heat is not much, but they do give off 1700 lumens. As they get bigger I am thinking of increasing to 42-65 watt compacts. Here is an interesting link on lighting http://muextension.missouri.edu/xplor/agguides/hort/g06515.htm#table.
Good day
WoooHoooo 18 seedlings and counting! :*O> Some are runtish, but they are green. Goes to show ya plant seeds even if the embryo doesn't look very big.
Later
Hey how long does it take for a true leaf to grow after an Asiatic germination?
Aggghhhh I have fungus gnats in my lily seedling box what do I do ? HELP!
This message was edited Oct 17, 2006 12:32 PM
Unless you are growing something that needs lots of constant moisture, like a fern, fungus gnats are present because you're keeping the soil more wet than it needs to be. Can you let it dry out more between waterings? Are the holes large enough in the bottom of your container for good drainage.? It is the larval stage that requires high moisture. Your stuck with the flying adults until they die naturally, 1-2 weeks? Usually chemical control is not needed.
Anyone else have some good tips?
see how sprinkled cinnamon works? Also, some yellow paper squares smeared with vaseline. I always have tiny gravel on the tops of my indoor pots for the winter
inanda
pard~
What are these? I forgot to ask, but there was a gloriowhatzis on the loose at the time.
