Bamboo in N.CA

Concord, CA(Zone 9a)

Hi,
I don't know anything about Bamboo, that said my son is looking for bamboo to use as a screen across the back of his lot, something not invasive as we have heard it can be. We live in CA zone 9. We have hot dry summers. Any suggestion would really be appreciated.

The easiest to find clumping (non-invasive) bamboos are Oldhamii (Bambusa oldhamii) and Alphonse Karr (Bambusa multiplex). I've seen both at Lowes and Home Depot, but they are only for sale seasonally. Oldhamii eventually gets 40+ ft tall with 3-4" diameter canes and is coldhardy to 20 degrees. Al Karr get's 20+ ft with 2" canes and is coldhardy to 15 degrees. Prices vary from $35-50 for a 5 gallon and $75-100 for a 15 gallon. Stay away from "Golden Bamboo". It's the most common and most invasive.

Linda ~ "Hot dry summers" is certainly an understatement. I used to visit there in the summer. For the rest of us, Concord is in the valley of Mt. Diablo, diablo means "devil", if that gives you any indication. Cheers.
