Thanks for the sympathy, but yes we have a great fall, winter, and spring. :-)

I agree about subtlety, especially when a plant has a great flower, last thing it need is some sort of variegation, never cared for the look of the variegated cup of gold vine.

Dogs not subtle, not subtle at all.

Ah- I think you are right about some overpowering variegation for semi-demure flowers. Other times, it is a supreme accent, contrast, or harmony. Bright, bubbly showy flowers tend to look better with white and gold splashes (than pastels or small flowers), in my shortsighted opinion.
Another vine:
Hedera h. 'Yellow Ripple' I love this thing.

Yes, Kenton - the leaves on my Aristolochia (a birthday gift from Rylaff) are mottled yellow and red. As usual, your pictures are lovely!!!

Mesa, AZ(Zone 9b)

Yellow and red? Where's your pic, Kay? Would love to see that one!

James your pictures are very interesting, thank you

Thanks.
I'd like to see that, Kay. You mean your A. gigantea?

Ibicella lutea which is semi-carnivorous and can be invasive. Luckily, I didn't plant this in my garden.

Good tastes, Shirley. Even the deviant carnovore. How wide are the Hoshi Asago flowers? Do you know if 'Fujino Momo' is part of Park's 'Mt Fuji' mix? If, so I've got it all over a fence.
Is the picotee recuved back and thus hidden?
Great representation of color for Carnaby, too. Thanks for the pictures!

So Shirley let me ask about Morning Glories - Do they reseed heavily (these hybrids, 'etc') if you don't collect pods as they ripen. I've never grown any. Picking seeded pods however is not a problem, it's just a question I have. Also, those Japanese hybrids, it appears they have feathery foliage or at least that "Fujino Momo" does. And lastly, do the Japanese ones also set seed (pretty heavily). Now I'm just assuming these plants, 'any morning glory', does. Set the record straight for me will ya? Or maybe someone else can answer my questions.

I appreciate it,

Dax
(Kenton was typing while I was about to send) - Thanks again.

Denver, CO

Heya D-man; I've not had the Japanese guy's seed survive the winter. I. purpurea and I. tricolor cvrs, yes. I've collected seed, stored it, and planted for the next year. But this is just my short experience...
If you like that pink thing (I like pale pink as long as it isn't within a mile of my garden) I will have seeds for you.

Dax, I was just gonna ask Shirley the same thing about her Morning Glories. I planted 5 seeds when I moved in my house 11 years ago. I loved em, the hummers loved em. Then the next year they grew all by them self! Yippie!!! OMG, they were every where. The five original were behind my roses on a chain link fence. So I tried pullin em out except for 3 or 4 vines. Do this day, 11 years later, I can't get rid of the %$@$# MG. Maybe these hybrids aren't has bad, but I'd be afraid to try it again when I'm still fighting these.

My mother always told me to never plant Morning Glories! Thanks Debbie for the info.

James, I was in the middle of responding - so here's what I was going to say -

Thanks for the offer James, but I'll decline. And the information too.

I like every color, but I think I'm going to do a little homework first.

Park Seed is also a place I do a little business.

I'd post photos - but my plants are dying! I haven't been doing my mulching duty!

Dummy me.

Take care,

Dax

The MG's are great, I love MG's. but Im having some serious clematis envy here :-(

Hey Kenton, love that Sao paulo, what are you gonna do with that in the fall? Would love to swing a few cuttings if you're cutting it back to try to overwinter. LMK what you you'd like in trade, maybe I have it.

I am with you on the Clematis envy Lynn. I have not given up hope on them here yet.
Kenton absolutely georgeous!!!

Mesa, AZ(Zone 9b)

Marie, you mean you haven't bought one? I thought for sure you'd have several by now LOL. I have a small one inside from Eva when she moved, it's coming along, if it survives I'll plant it in a cool spot in october. I also have our native clematis....drummondii, got it at desert survivors in the late spring when me, sheryl, and Mary did the roadtrip, it's growing very well, no blooms, yet, but growing very well. Don't know how gopher proof it would be.

Tolleson, AZ(Zone 9a)

Ooops I did not mean to sound like I have not tried. I have about 6 different ones trying to grow. The gophers got a few. None seem to be growing much though The puppies chewed a few up and those are trying to come back but I think it is still too hot though for them. I did not see clematis drummondii when I was at desert survivors. I will have to check when I go back.

Mesa, AZ(Zone 9b)

Ahhh, of course you have them lol. It was at the far side under the shade cloth structure where the native passies and asarina were.

Tolleson, AZ(Zone 9a)

Thanks it is now on my list. I must have just over looked it. Imagine that me overlooking a vine.

Rock Island, IL(Zone 5b)

Looks like I better get the camera.

Be right back.

This is all pretty much Passionflower incarnata and 'Sweet Autumn' Clematis (sorry I'm not good with species within this group) - but here's what I got for ya:

We'll start with the best one:

Clematis crispica for it's unique brown leaves -

A passionflower on my back door entry and the hints of a 'Sweet Autumn' above going to the top of the trellising poles I made on my Pergola:
