That slug looks like a nightmare!

I hope that size is not the norm!

Coast range of, OR(Zone 8b)

That is the biggest I've found so far. Most of mine are about the same length as bluelytes but mine are bigger around.....maybe I'm feeding them too well.....

seeing you are up in oregon, do you suppose that's a banana slug? i saw a couple up that way many years ago and can't really remember what they look like, but the size looks right.

Olympia, WA(Zone 8b)

TRAC,
Those slugs are YELLOW, hence the name, BANANA, lol. I dont know the name, but it looks very similar to my slug caught in the circle of death, (laughs maniacally), Muahahahahha!!

I looked up banana slug in an attempt to ID the disgusting little thing and I found out that banana slugs come in a range of colors, but that they don't have a narrow orange stripe on them just above there "feet". Regular garden slugs do. He wasn't around anymore so I couldn't get a good look.

Here is a link:

Either way, they are gross!

You know, one of my fantasies has always been to live in the Pacific Northwest...visited once years ago, thought it was the most beautiful region in the country. I even like rain. But that slug has pretty much put an end to that fantasy. I'm not even sure I'll even be able to drink coke again after this.

Coast range of, OR(Zone 8b)

OOOps.....Sorry to ruin Coke for you.....

(blushing sheepishly)

Willamette Valley, OR(Zone 8a)

"Have a Coke and a..........SLUG!!!" ROTFLOL!

Aurora, CO(Zone 5a)

Now I'm wondering what Coke does to slugs.

St. Louis, MO(Zone 5b)

ROTFL mgh!

MGH,

Sounds like a science experiment in the making....

Griffin, GA(Zone 8a)

My male kitty would have a ball with that slug of yours, Got. I don't have the garden variety slugs (or at least I've never had slime on any of my garden plants). They seem to like my rotting logs and leaves in the woods instead. But on humid nights when they come out and crawl on the cement wall, my cat can amuse himself for a long time by reaching up and poking the slugs and watching them shrink up, then waiting for them to pop out to regular size again. Bonus fun if they have antennae. We have both antennaed kinds and flat, black ones without antennae.

Tilt head to the side, Reach out paw and poke *shrink* *expand* tilt head to the side, Reach out paw and poke *shrink*.... repeat for about 15 minutes or more. My cat is easily amused.

But if you want to talk Uuuugly, even worse than the slugs, in my opinoin anyway, are these guys...

They eat earthworms (that's a nightcrawler it's got), and I'm glad there was a warning on this thread, because talk about grapic violence - I've even got blood here. Poor earthworm. I was too late to save him, so of course I got my camera and took pictures - mwhahaha.

And they're on the east coast, Noreaster - though I'm not sure how far up the coast they go so far - so you might be safer over on the west coast after all.

WHAT IS THAT???? That's disgusting!!! It's a good thing I'm going back to bed instead of trying to eat breakfast! You can KEEP those things over there....I DON'T want them over here!!! ;o)

Maine, United States(Zone 5b)

OMG, that is beyond disgusting, whatever it is. Suddenly my Maine slugs (and mosquitos and black flies) aren't looking too bad. I know down there in the south you guys have a lot of creepy crawlies that are waaaaay too supersized for me!

Coast range of, OR(Zone 8b)

What is that thing picking on that poor earth worm!!!

Worms are friends not food!!!

You tell 'em, Bruce!

Issaquah, WA(Zone 7a)

Nightbloom! That looks exactly like it arrived back on Earth with Sigourney Weaver and I want you to delete that photo immediately! What IS IT? A snail? I'm thinking our little and even big NW slugs are a walk in the park compared to that menace!

Griffin, GA(Zone 8a)

Sorry guys! I can remove the picure if you like - but I made you all feel better about the slugs, now didn't I?

That is a land planaria (species Bipalium kewnese) which is one of the flatworms (Platyhelminthes). I get them into my office for identification sometimes (though this one was in my yard), because they scare the heck out of people who think they have a giant leech or something. They really do get quite large even if not very wide. This species can supposedly reach about a foot in length, though about 6 inches is more common.

For anyone brave enough or curious enough, you can read more than you may want to know here... http://creatures.ifas.ufl.edu/misc/land_planarians.htm

Fortunately I don't have a lot of these things, so my earthworm population isn't in any danger.

NIGHT,

I never thought ANYTHING could make me feel better about slugs, but you managed to do it Night_Bloom!

Normally I'm pretty strong in the stomach....I watch all the surgery stuff and animals eating each other, shows about parasites, diseases, etc, no problem while eating dinner, but that guy actually made my stomach turn....glad you posted it though! Please don't remove it :-)

Maureen

BTW, does salt work on those things?

Maureen, I'm right there with you girl. Love those graphic medical shows and such, but that photo almost had me running for a bucket! Gaaaaaaa-rooooooowwwwwwssssssss!

Debra

St. Louis, MO(Zone 5b)

LOL....Yeah, I clicked the picture thinking, "how bad can it be?" Well I found out! Yuck-O!

Oh my Night_Bloom, you've outdone yourself.

Ahem, you are all sick! I like that quality in people.

Hey guys, thanks for the good time in this sequel thread to the first. I haven't laughed so hard in a long time. Whatcha all got planned for #3?

Griffin, GA(Zone 8a)

mlm01 - I would assume that salt would do the trick, but after reading again the information in that link I put up there, I found out something I'd forgotten... In addition to eating earthworms, guess what else the land planaria eat?

If you guessed slugs, you would be correct. Now THAT would really be a gruesome sight to see a land planaria eating a slug. Even I don't think I'd take a picture of that. Okay, I probably would. I really need help - hee.

St. Louis, MO(Zone 5b)

ROFLOLOL Night_Bloom.....
And I'd probably look at that picture a few times too! LOL

I am sick it's true. Two of my favorite programs I've seen are "Eaten alive" about various parisites people can get and "101 things removed from the human body."

That's ent-ter-tain-ment! ;-)

(I do have sympathy for the folks though, I'm sick but not sadistic)

I don't watch a lot of tv but it was on last fall as I walked through the family room and I caught a glimpse of that "Eaten Alive". I had to sit down and watch it. I, too, felt horrible for the people. Really glad medical advancements are such that there are treatments out there.

The slugs and the planaria are just flat out disgusting to me... but I had to look at the links. Why watch the 10 o'clock news to get grossed out. Come here to this thread, be amongst friends.

waukesha, WI(Zone 5a)

Oh wow that is the ugliest grossest slimiest thing I've ever seen, and even turned my cast iron stomach over, yeowwwww if I saw that in my yard I would MOVE and I don't mean just me, I mean my entire household and then I would go live in a conda far far far above ground and never walk the earth again. YUCKKKKKKK!

Of course, I am sending that picture to all my nearest and dearest friends immediately !!!!

Aurora, CO(Zone 5a)

I admit, I watch TV shows like 101 Things Removed from the Human Body. I also watch forensics shows, autopsies, stuff like that. All just out of scientific curiosity, of course.

Bot flies are gross.
