Hakanechloa found!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Local!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hastings, MI(Zone 5b)

I nearly plotzed when I was sniffing around the plant racks at Horrocks, a
local grocery and nursery store. Stuffed in the shelves were tons
of Hakanechloas. they look like albas, and alba striatas. They had two
sizes, big about a quart and smaller about 1/2 quart. Not expensive
either.

I would be willing to make a trip to Grand Rapids if anyone wanted some
of this grass and buy it for them. I would do it for cost of gas, shared
amongst you.

I don't know if they have any more left, but I would be willing to take a
chance and see. I would not feel good calling as they have all Mexicans
working there and they don't speak one word of English. But they water
the plants well and take care of them well also.

I think the quart size was about $15 and the smaller about 8 or $9.

I had bought two and they are gorgeous, doing quite well.
I could also remove them from heavy pots and ship with root balls.
Regards,
sheri
I will try to put my phone number on my plant trading information
so anyone can call me if they need to. that would be available
to paid subscribers only.

I just came across some Hakone albo-striata yesterday at a local garden center. They were all in quart pots and marked down to $10 a pot. I nabbed two of them and may go back for more. ;) I love this stuff, a mature stand of it is one of the more beautiful things I've seen. It's what got me interested in grasses..

hi Diann!
I have seen the Haka's in photographs of gardens like for years,
and I always wondered about it.

But,,of course, these were very planned gardens with yards and
yards (measurements) of Hakas cascading luxuriously down
onto a carefully planned little stream, or fountain pool, or a
giant natural pool.

I have discovered a few things about the Haka, they are slow
growing, like some shade, and my chickens and ducks and
geese relish it. : (

I have now, a few pots of Haka of Haka nubs. Wahhhhhhhhhhh.
Stupid geese. I can't wait to get the chicken palace finished and
then fenced in. Versailles de Poulet, and the little house is of
course the Petit Trianon de Poulet

Regards!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Sheri who is absolutely NUTS about gardening and critters

Lisbon, IA(Zone 5a)

Sheri, you crack me up! Versailles de Poulet, Petit Trianon de Poulet.. :) I do not have geese, chickens, or ducks, but, I can imagine them doing in your Hakone grass. I'm going to plant mine near some of my hostas and hopefully, it will be happy there, it's a nice moist area. Keep me posted on you chicken palaces and your Hakone grass. :)

Hastings Mi? Wow. I grew up summers in Lake Odessa on the lake. I loved that place. Havn't been back since my Dad died in '86 and we sold the cottage. Gosh I miss that place. How is the lake? The last I heard it was in trouble.

I put in three pots of Hakone this year for the first time. Paid an arm and a leg for mail order. They are stunning paired with a small blue leaved hosta called Love Pat. They are in total shade in damp fairly rich soil.

Lisbon, IA(Zone 5a)

Snapple45, do you know there is a Lake Odessa in southeastern Iowa? It's in Louisa county. :)

I have several blues I can plant my Hakone grass next to, I just need to find one with the proper ground moisture. :)

No Ticker, I didn't know that. There must be some importance to the name or geographical type/location that I don't understand, else why repeat it? Very interesting. Blue & Hakone, gorgeous no matter how accomplished.

Thornton, IL

Pssst. I found Hakonechloa macra 'Aureola' at my local Home Depot for $5.99 each. I got the last two!

Happy, happy joy joy joy!

Lisbon, IA(Zone 5a)

Way to go Prairie Girl!!! I checked our Homey Depot a while back and there wasn't anything interesting in the joint. I'm glad you got your bargin!! :)

Diann

Thanks, it was nice. LOL

Hastings, MI(Zone 5b)

Happy Happy Joy Joy!!!!!!!!!!!!! You are hysterical!
How many people will know that song? My daughter
Becky (now 9 1/2 months pregnant) used to sing that all
the time from the sponge bob show?

I named my 2,000 lb. Percheron mare Joy Joy.

Snapple: Lake O is being rebuilt , the roads are being rebult anyways.
I am sorry, I don't know anything about the lake being in trouble.
I will research it immediately. It is a nice large user friendly lake.
Not too many homes around it, the lake people I guess have
at least managed to keep it somewhat open and less stressed.
people around here love , love, love (ugh) their ski boats(noise
is 1 million decibles), and their power boats (they go from one end
of the lake back in 1.2 seconds), floating party palaces with pontoons
the size of the Big Stick, (the Roosevelt air carrier)(i think) , ice fishing
with 4 rooms and central heating, truck sales on the ice, oh yes, did
i mentiion ski doos? they go on the lake in ice or water. you have to
see them sink. all that gas in the water! ugh.

people here flush their terlets into the ground, the old ones anyhows.
that goes to the lake. and, cow poop. we have a million cow farm
near us in freeport. actually there are 6,000 head, but the smell is
one million, and the stress to the two rivers its inbetween of. they
are fined every day for polluting. doesn't bother them.
i digress.
sorry gang.

I have to go watch the news now.

sheri

Sheri - You are clearly delusional. That song is from Ren & Stimpy. LOL

Your daughter is 9-1/2 months pregnant?! What's up with that?? Do you mean 10 gestational months?

I'm going to bed, will check back in the a.m. Be good. LOL

Lisbon, IA(Zone 5a)

Sheri, hope your daugher is well. A bit over-due, is she?

2000 pound Percheron mare called Joy Joy... :) I bet she nickers everytime you say that. :)

Hastings, MI(Zone 5b)

Ren and Stimpy! Of course! I KNEW that. It just came out wrong.

I do tend to exagerate a little bit. She is due on or whereabout of
October 11th, and then I heard she was due in September, but
we are in the final hours of September, so who knows when.

In the morning, when I go out to the barn to open the doors so the
chickens can go out (my neighbor complained about my
rooster), as I am walking to the side door, I call out softly to
my Joy Joy, "Joy Joy" and she nickers when she hears that,
because she knows she is going OUT to the grass and fresh
air. she loves that. : ) Well, I open the door and about 30 chickens
come blowing out like they were being blown outta of a vacumn
cleaner, all squawking and flying in over my head as only fat
chickens can fly, and landing heavily on the grass by me, clucking
and ducks quacking and geese honking. Its quite something.

Imagine!!! All this from some Hakanechloa grass. simply amazing
what a little grass can do to your psyche. And I mean the Haka,
not the funny stuff. I don't need any funny grass, I am quite beside
myself without it, thank you very much.
More thunderstorms coming tonight. We had water spouts and
tornados last night and yesterday morning. Its a busy weather
season here in the midwest! LOL.
Hope the feathers don't get blown off my chickens, I will have to
sew them jackets.

Regards to all
sheri

Thornton, IL

Sew them jackets! That would be so cute, Ha ha ha ha! Okay, Oct. 11 is not so bad, still in the ballpark, no extra innings yet. Is this your first grandchild? How exciting it must be!

Holland, OH(Zone 5b)

WiggglyPaw I appreciate the update on Lake Odessa. That place is absolutely the best part of my childhood. The fishing was outstanding. It did have very nasty aglae blooms in the summer though from the pollution way back then. I can just imagine it these days. If you do learn the lake's current condition please d-mail me.

Thanks
Mary

Hastings, MI(Zone 5b)

Forget the jackets. One of my books has a pattern for making the hens a overall to wear
around the farm.

PG- this will be no. 4 gc. My no. 2 daughter had 3 kidlets all under 5 years old, now
no. 3 daughter is having her no. 1. LOLOL... A + B= X/4 with exponent of 3.

Mary: I will call DNR this week and find out condition of the lake. I am curious.
Also, we now have here what are called factory milk farms. We also have,
right by Lake Odessa, a million chicken farm. Can you believe?!! How do they
keep count of a million chickens? Imagine trying to collect those eggs? 400,000
per day. You would have to get up mighty early to get those eggs.

Everyone here almost gardens. Its a sight to behold. There are lots of
garden tours and featured gardens during the growing season. I can write
an article about the Haka and i am sure it will be published in the local
paper. I think Haka is that great!

Take care all!~
sheri

Thornton, IL

You are so great at multiplying! Ha ha ah, well.

"Everyone here almost gardens?" You crack me up. Have a great day.

Thornton, IL

Sheri - Any news yet?

Hastings, MI(Zone 5b)

PG
You are soooo sweet.
Last niight at 6pm we got a call from
my dad that we have a new grandson, Dan.
Thats about it, about all I know right now.
Everyone is healthy, and this is our 4th grandchild.
I am so glad I am not having them anymore. LOL.
Its better the kids do it. : ))))

I am sewing like a madwoman and sending out
a package of stuff I made for the new little one.
I made two onesies, 2 "George" crib sheets, one
George fleece blanket, one fake fur giraffe with
fake suede moss color trim around it rug, and I
am currently working on two bath towels with
chickens I designed for hoodies on them. Too cute.
She had registered at Babies r us, but the items
are too dear for us to purchase. I am sure she will
love what I made for the little new person.

I wonder if he will love gardening?

sheri

Congratulations Gramma!!!!

I must've felt that stork's wing brush by here.

Whew, glad it missed me! LOL I am so NOT having any more babies! All of those precious gifts, sounds like Dan will be all set for awhile. I'm very happy for all of you, many blessings to your family.
