nice kanita.

Oh, how often do i feed.
I feed every week. 1/2 teaspoon of fertilizer. I lightly water every day so it gets lightly fertilized as well every day.

west Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

I got the added bonus of a rangoon creeper about to bust loose in a riot of color and intoxicating scent on this lattice.

Life is good! Cricket, not at home now. Have written myself a note to post you the recipe Friday night.

west Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

Actually its a yellow squash.

Ijamsville, MD(Zone 6b)

Cricket - they look like black raspberries to me. We have some here and they are yummy!

Nauvoo, AL(Zone 7a)

I did not know there was such a thing as black raspberry.
learn something every day.
Before they produced, some one said the plants looked like raspberry.
Now I know for sure.
How interesting.

Peppers, which had until recently, looked quite pitiful....

Debbie- Lucky you! Are those bell peppers?

west Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

Yes Kanita--Goliath bell peppers.

Nauvoo, AL(Zone 7a)

My yellow squash is loaded with squash-female blossoms----At least 6-8 per plant---Sadly I have no male blooms yet:(

Lawrenceville, GA(Zone 7b)

Cricket:

How can you tell the difference?

BB

Chesapeake Beach, MD

Female blossoms have a small fruit at the base. Male blossoms are at the end of a sort of long stem or petiole and there is no small fruit at the base.

Lawrenceville, GA(Zone 7b)

Thanks Mary:

I'm assuming you need both to make a squash.

Brennan

Nauvoo, AL(Zone 7a)

yes need the male bloom to pollinate the female in order for the female to keep living. Other wise the little squash will eventually rot and fall off.

That makes me want to go around to the neighbors garden and find a male bloom ---bring it home and --well---pollinate the females. Veggie Love.

Ijamsville, MD(Zone 6b)

You could be the madam of squash:)

Nauvoo, AL(Zone 7a)

LOL

Lawrenceville, GA(Zone 7b)

"Madam of squash''

LOL

Nauvoo, AL(Zone 7a)

Seriously. I have 20 squash plants and none of them have male blooms. Geesh. Wheres a male when you need one? !!!

Nauvoo, AL(Zone 7a)

"a thought"
I do not have a whole lot of room in the greenhouse in early spring. But next year I am growing 3 extra squash very early in 5 gallon pots so I have male blooms by the time my main crop is putting out females.

west Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

sure beats being a squashed madam...

And there's tomatoes back there...somewhere. A little inspiration with 5 days to go is much in demand as the sun sets.

ME?

Los Angeles, CA(Zone 10a)

Debbie-OOOOOOOOHH, I am so jealous!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! But nonetheless, very happy for you!

kanita

west Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

Kanita you have to be thankful for tomato season in TX...it only lasts a month while all the plants set fruit all at once and then promptly succomb to the heat and humidity...lol...then comes "coddling" new seedlings thru searing Aug-Sept heat/humidity and praying the nights cool down to just the perfect temps for 30 days prior to the first cold front in Nov. It's always a gamble down here. Guess that's why they invented Texas hold 'em...had to have something to do in the air conditioning.

I hear out in LA the weather is always nice. ;)

Nauvoo, AL(Zone 7a)

Great tour Dmj,

Thank you for pointing this thread out to me. Great designing, do you mind if I use some of your ideas? Companion planting is a wonderful way to keep your gardens pesticide and fungicide free.

Thank you for sharing with me and others.
