Horray for you and all survivors!
Here we ARE!!!
Hey Kelly,
I KNOW the names of my hostas. LOL Roses, that's another story.
Ann
I named this one Fred, and this one Jill, and this one over here is Grow Dang it.....
FOTFLOL
Ann
Gayle, I have a few names like that too. Makes it easier to remember than seedling #3-2005.
PrairieGirl, 30 years is a long time for bonus time. Good for you, never look back.
It's always heartening to hear about the cancer/illness success stories. Thanks to all of the posters that shared.

Hello from Des Moines.
I'm 59, married (2nd time) 24 years.
Mom of 34 y/o son with autism, so my nest will will never be empty--only half empty.
I prefer to look at that as a bonus. (:>)
My husband and I are newer gardeners, but he has quite a green thumb!
We have about 125 hostas--love them much!
Peonies from Mom's home--a nice memorial to her.
Had a professional finish our back yard last year after we had a pond put in.
Our son loves plants ever since he worked at a greenhouse for several years.
I'm always looking for very hardy low maintenance plants for his home.
It's a duplex with a nice level yard.
So far, he has:
yuccas
hostas
a whole row of an unidentified lily
apeony bush that's just getting started
a rose bush that will probably be removed
a mature apple tree
I look forward to getting together with you on line.
Maybe the Des Moines area members could get together in person?
Toni
Toni, hi there!
The Iowa RU is May 5 & 5, check the Roundup forum for the details. I'd love to see you there! And I bet the closer members will be getting together more often too.
Ann,
AH, I C,,,,,bet Roses r harder to ID than Hostas,,,,,u poor thing u,,,,wish I could help, but only have 2 roses, they r minis I received as gifts last year and both were from Wal-Mart. I decided to plop them in on the East side and right next to the house to see if they would make it. I "knew" they wouldn't 'cause I've killed every rose I ever had. Spring came and I was a doin' the Happy Rose dance,,,,they both came back and did lovely. I fact one is still blooming,,,,can't believe it.

May 5 & 6???
I was there last year. What a GREAT group! Loved being there and meeting everyone.
Thanks for the RU reminder. I lost my appointment book. Will get it in the new one right away!
Toni
Toni, you're 59?? No way!!
I was trying to keep the second day a secret?? LOL I didn't make the RU last year, I joined afterwards, but I can't wait for the next one!
*mg really needs to proof-read her posts better!*
Just checking in. I carried my first watering can at 3 and have been playing in the dirt ever since. Our daughters are off to college, so I see this as a greater opportunity to get involved with gardening and my Dg friends.
I stick it in the ground and if the summer drought doesn't kill it or the below zero cold doesn't get it--I KEEP it! Some system, huh?
But Wanda! Your system produces beautiful results!
And Hi!
Hi to you all. On overload here. I make 1/3 my year's income in the next two months if I work hard & smart. (That means I can play in the garden most of the summer without guilt.) Nose back to the grindstone...
Hi everyone! I'm married 5 months. (We won't mention which time.) I'm 42 with two boys, one grown and gone and the other a senior in HS. No pets, but I can see deer, hedgehogs, and other wildlife out the patio door. DH isn't a big gardener, but doesn't like to mow so is supportive of every new flower bed I want to put in. We have a new house with no trees or anything as of last spring. Now we have 12 trees and lots of room for growing beautiful things. Or messing up. Ha! This thread was a great idea!
Hey McGlory, glad you found us!
Hi Moby!
I thought I'd posted in this thread, but I can't find me. LOL.
I'm 48, married for 30 years, have two daughters (25 and 23), seven cats and one dog. Two of the cats are indoors, the rest are outside during the day, and they have their own kitty condo they sleep in at night (the pool house). The dog is outside and she belongs to my husband. She's nice, but I'm not a dog person. I'm a majorly cat person.
I'm a dental hygienist who quit working on a regular basis two years ago, after doing it for 26 years, and now I sub. That's why I can garden now. I've got the time and energy for it. My mom is a master gardener, so I've got an expert on call pretty much 24/7.
Bonus time! That's wonderful way to think of it, personally I always have, how did u know? :-)
stoni,
125 Hostas,,,,,,hope2 c u in the Hosta Forum with the rest of us 'junkies' LOL
Kelly
I'm kind of late, just home from a full day remodeling someones house. My son, 31, & I do construction & cabinet making in our off-season from gardenning. Gardenning & flowers are our living. 3½ & almost another big greenhouse, 6 acres of garden vegetables. Cut back from 20 acres couple of years ago. We are blessed to live in one of the most productive parts of the U.S.A., that being southern Minnesota, sort of the top of the Midwest.
I have a wife of 33 years, daugther, 28, with 2 lovely grandkids.
We daycare the grandaughter all day & GS after school. What fun!
A stepson, 36. He has a boy 16 & a girl 15.
I,m an oldtimer here on DG. I have lots of threads & posts about greenhouse growing & gardenning. For new people, click on Country Gardens & scan through posts I hasve started.
My wife & I attended Iowa Round-up last spring & will be there on May 5 & 6, 2006.http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/510804/
I hope to meet all of you there.
This is one of the best times we have had in a long time.
It is amazing to walk into a restaruant & join a table of about 20 people you have only heard their online name before. Took about 2 minutes to become friends!
Food, Saturday noon, unbelievable!
I'm ramblin'.
Bye for now,
Bernie
Hi everyone, I'm Toni and I'm 42 years old. Happily married 14 years as of Oct. 12th and have lived in Chicago all my life. No kids and no dogs; just 1 parakeet that was found outside. I no longer work but I was a secretary in my former life (heart health issues forced me to quit) so now I have time to tend my small garden. I love to start seeds indoors and I'm dabbling with cuttings (geraniums and perilla) for the first time this year. Have lots of houseplants too.
Looking forward to getting to know some of my neighbors here on DG!
Toni
Hi toni - Beautiful garden, what part of town are you in?
Hi all,
I'm Mike, 47, and single. I have had a lifelong passion for plants. Trees and dwarf conifers are my favorites, but I love anything that grows. My grandparents, on both sides of the family, (when they were alive) were gardeners and my parents are still gardeners. Neither my brother or sister are gardeners. My mom and dad always kid me that they took the sandbox away from me when I was too young and that's why I still like to play in the dirt.
I belong to 8 garden clubs. I'm president of two of them and on the board of a third. I am not renewing my membership in a couple of the clubs due to time constraints (I need to get some of my life back and have a life outside of plants for a while). I love Dave's Garden and lurk in a number of the forums.
It's so nice to "meet" all of you and I'm so glad we now have the UMG forum. Thanks to Dave and Terry...
Mike

Hi Prairiegirl...I'm on the near nw side of the city in an area called Belmont/Central.
hey Toni, what are the tall white flowered plants?
I wanted to know that, too, MG.
Look like a Canna.
The tall white plants are Nicotiana Sylvestris (flowering tobacco). I started them from seed indoors and they grow like crazy! They self-seed too but if you want them to flower earlier you have to start them indoors. I had a few self-seeded ones from last year and they just started blooming maybe a month ago. I've got LOTS of seed, if you want some. Let me know.
Toni
I would very much like to have some! I've only had the shorter version. Is it very fragrant too?
Would you like to trade for some 4:00's? I have a mix of "Neon" and "Broken Colors", or SASBE or postage?
Hi MG...Yes, the nicki's are fragrant and they grow tall! Mine reached upwards of 6 ft. I've got hot pink 4 o'clocks that self-seed and come up every year and just this year I tried the Keleidescope which is like the Broken Colors and I let them reseed so I'll see what comes up next spring. SASE would be just fine. I'll d-mail my address to you.
Toni
Thank you Toni!
Is there any seed you are looking for in particular?
LOL @ MG trying to get rid of her 4 o'clocks...
I told you, I have 2 pint jars full, and I'm still out there picking up seed.
Lucky thing I have a steep weedy bank behind my house, lol, I plan to toss half of them over the fence!
I have a question........is there a place here to keep track of wants?
MG, thank you for asking but I'm set right now with seeds. Something comes over me in March when I get goofy and start way too many seeds and end up with enough seedlings for myself and half the neighborhood! Hope you enjoy the nicki's!
Toni
kbaumle,
You can set up a section for "wants" on your "TradeList". Click the "Trading" tab from your Home page, and it will walk you through it.
LOL, I should set up my own!
I know Belmont Toni, my daughter has a "friend" who lives there! (She's 17, wants to go to DePaul, we're scheduled to visit Lincoln Park campus on Nov. 6th). Love your garden, just the right size, not too big, and not too small. It looks like the same cannas I had in Riverdale, must be a very old strain, mine were hardy too! Do you dig and store yours?
Hey Toni, I never thought of nicotiana with the tall red cannas ! They look great together, I think I will try that next year, my cannas are always kind of a group by themselves. They didn't get very tall here this summer though, without much water most of the summer. Think I'll start a thread on digging bulbs......I have questions.
Country gardens, I picked up on your overwintering perennials in pots on the GH floor. I am not quite a business, still working full time, but have a huge plant sale each spring, end of April. This year I thought I'd try to winter over some plants in pots that I am growing just to sell because it's just too hard to get them all out of the ground by that time. I made myself a kind of a cold-frame (so far without any type of cover) and set in many pots, and tucked them in with fine wood mulch. I am hoping this will tide them over. Still deciding if I should cover it, I want snow in there. Also, have a quite a few trees and shrubs I am treating the same way, now I am thinking I should put a few of the perennials in the (unheated) GH as you do. I kept a planter of sedum over last year that way, and it worked great. Think this will all work for me?? Anyone?? Legit
Edited to say: OOps! Guesss I got carried away, I guess this should have gone on the overwintering thread!!

We put them under straw one year, then covered the whole thing with old greenhouse plastic & more straw. Worked good, but was a mess with all the straw in among the plants.
