'Caution Sign' started the show a couple of days ago, and today three more SDBs opened ...
This is perhaps my very favorite iris, 'What Again'. It is vigorous, healthy, fertile, a prolific and reliable bloomer, and is one of only 6 irises that has ever managed to rebloom in my garden. Oh yeah, and it's just sooooo cute!
and now for the SDBs ...
'Jewel Baby' has bloomed only once before (2003) since I planted it in 2001, and it gave me only one horribly distorted flower and very little increase. This year, however, it has FINALLY clumped up and has a bunch of buds getting ready to pop open. This first flower is a MUCH better representative of this cultivar than the one it gave me in 2003!
My Jewel Baby seems to be more maroon/burgundy. I am almost positive that last year it bloomed and it was definitely purple like yours. I will have to go a huntin' and see if I by chance moved it!
just gorgeous all of them
They are georgious, I think the dwarves are so danty looking.
Wondering, I don't have many dwarves, but I have the ones I have in full sun, gues s that's ok ha? someone told me the japanese roof iris needed shade?
kathy
All bearded irises do great in full sun, though they may appreciate some afternoon shade in really hot climates.
Iris tectorum is one I've never managed to keep alive here, so I am not certain of its growing requirements. I *think* it prefers dappled shade, but I could just as easily be wrong about that.

Keep those dwarf pictures coming!
'Caution Sign' is one of the prettiest SBD's I've seen! Great photo.

Don't worry, I'll keep posting ... just as soon as Ma Nature decides to warm things up again! All this renewed cool air has my bloom stalled again. Plump buds are aching to pop open if the temps will just cooperate. Maybe today. We're supposed to get into the 50s today and 60s by mid-week. That should give me LOTS of pretty little irises to show you!

Laurie, Was that lovely picture of "caution sign", or "what if?"
Laurie --my Dwarfs are finishing up , but I'm sure enjoying yours!
The first pic in this thread is 'What Again'. I posted 'Caution Sign' earlier in a different thread.
Laurie
Laurie--your bloom pics are great--thank you for sharing them!~
Its a great help to me as I consider additions to my gardens this year, especially since we are in similar zones.
My apologies to Chuck Chapman for posting this horrid pic of one of his creations. FOREVER BLUE has been trying to open this little bloom for several days in the cold and rain. Poor thing. No wonder it's misshapen and bedraggled. I'm really just posting it to show you guys what's blooming now, but I'll post a better pic later when a nicer flower opens on the clump.
This is another first time bloomer for me and one I hope will rebloom for me at some point.
I'm so thrilled that your Iris season has started laurie. And what lovely SDB. I've had to buy some this year just to find out what they are all about. You think that I'll be addicted? Do I have to ask? You guys are very bad influences - but fun bad influences. Now if I can just find one more square foot of dirt...........
Thanks, Doss. I've been getting mighty impatient with Ma Nature this year ... not that it's been doing any good. With any luck, temps will hold so my bloom season can progress.
Will you get addicted to SDBs? Most certainly, assuming they'll bloom for you. I've read lots of conflicting reports on their performance in warm winter areas. Seems that some *warm* folks can't get SDBs to bloom due to lack of adequate winter chill, while other *warm* folks bloom them with no problem. Go figure. I hope you're one of the iris lovers for whom they bloom their cute little heads off.
One of the many wonderful things about these little guys is that you can pack a bunch into a little bit of space!
Enjoy!

This pathetic little thing is supposed to be PROUD PRINCESS. Poor baby is blooming on a single rz planted last summer. Not only did it have to try to settle in and acclimate to northern MN, but then it was hit with all these late spring frosts while trying valiantly to set a bud in its first year. How sad! I won't hold this miserable excuse for an iris flower against it. I know it'll do better next year.
Lauire--really loving your dwarf babies! My dwarfs were so early & such heavy little bloomers and a few still blooming --I WANT MORE! Great front row option for me...
I can't believe it! Frost put a halt on my SDBs, but they're back blooming again along with my Intermediates & Tall Beardeds. Wow! Alot of bloom for the little space they take.
Let's see some more , laurie!
I am enjoying all the pics. Where do you order your's from?
I agree, the ones that I do have really put on a show.
Crown Princess is such a nice combination. Do these bloom before your TB? I need to be enlighted on these. I am clueless. Are they listed because of height? I enjoy looking at all the blooms.
MDBs (Miniature dwarf bearded) up to 8 inches
SDB (Standard dwarf bearded) 8 - 15 inches
IB (Intermediate bearded) 16 -27 inches
MTB (Miniature tall bearded) 16 - 27 inches
BB (border bearded) 16-27 inches
Diff. here is in the size of the bloom. BBs have larger flowers than MTBs
STBs (Standard tall bearded) These are the iris you usually think about . We tend to call them TBs Height more than 27 inches.
These are the last of the beardeds to bloom. Then come the siberians.
The MDBs and SDBs bloom first, with IBs not far behind.
Here in zone2b, we find the dwarf iris survive best.
Our main suppliers here in Canada are MacMillan, Chuck Chapman, both in Ontario, and
Parkeside Iris on Salt Spring Island in BC. (for siberians) We do order from the US, often a group order.
Cheers Inanda
edited to add TB height
edited again to add correct name of Parkeside Iris.
