DIY AeroCloner - EzCloner - U name it.

Dansville, NY(Zone 6a)

Items needed ,

Pond Water Pump , I use a 310 GPH pump from walmart.
cant remember the brand name. Cost is around 40 to 50 bucks.
and its not to well built, DONT RUN IT DRY .. the motor shaft is
not ceramic like the MagDrive brand. Its plastic and will ware.
but replacement parts are available for it.

Rubbermaid Storage Tote , 18 Gal .

1/2" Schedual 40 PVC pipe .. if i remember right 1 10 foot stick is plenty.

6 180 degree sprayers http://www.dripirrigation.com/drip_irrigation_info.php?cPath=39_68&products_id=390

Also you will need something to hold the plants,
neoprene inserts (from the EzCloner (brand name))
foam pipe insulation or netpots.

if using netpots and growrocks or perlite you NEED a screen between the
pump and sprayers.

now for the pics ....

To use , just fill container with water 70F to 75F to a few inches over
the pump and plug in the pump and let it run ...
dont forget to put the lid on first. (grin)

Mine will toss spray mist out the top a foot in the air.

What your after is a spray that coats the whole top of the lid.

On my unit i didnt glue any parts .

the threads on the sprayers is 10-32 so you will need a tap to make
the treads in the pvc pipe .. i think the drill you need is a #21 ..
the package the tap comes in should say ..

the Sprayers spray to the center of the container and point them alittle
upwards by adjusting the pipe in the elbow fittings ..

Have fun and propagate ..

WOW, thank you for the wonderful, detailed how-to description, Sparky! Your photos make it very clear! (I don't even have any questions..... :-)

Taylor Creek, FL(Zone 10a)

Wow Sparky, what a great set-up you have.
Now what are you cloning and how do you prepare your plant for these neoprene inserts?
Do you use pipe insulation with the inserts or is it a separate option? Do you remove some of the foam to get it to hold your plant material?
Was your hole saw 2"?
You really have a nice presentation here and I tried to think of every question I could. I am hoping this is going to work for me also.

Thank you for your hard work and generous sharing.

the neoprene and foam insualtion are just 2 different items u can
use to support the cutting . the neoprene ones if you buy them
are like 45 cents each. there just a round disk with a slit in them.

The foam insualtion like in my pic are orginally 3 to 4 foot long and
i just slice them up into 1 inch think pieces. they are slotted and have
a hole in the center so you have to roll them around the cutting some.
like in the pic holding the paintbrush plant , hehehee

for your cuttings , just do as normal , strip off everything cept a few
leaves on the top where you have a few nodes below whatever your
using to hold the cutting with (neoprene, foam , netpot )

I have see some other variations of just drilling 1/2 inch holes or so in the lid
and pushing 1 inch lengths of pvc pipe in them. but you get a lot of splash up
through the pipes ..

Dansville, NY(Zone 6a)

here are a few more pics ,
one useing the foam insulation holding a strawberry plant
in my NFT gutter and one useing a netpot and growrocks.
(the growrocks will make dust and junk in the water so a
filter is needed on the pump)

Would this mister work in a tall clear container for rooting things like rododendruns so it mists the whole container?
I want to root some stuff that Ive been told needs a mister

Dansville, NY(Zone 6a)

you wouldnt want a clear container, water + light = alge
which eat up the oxygen in the water.

the sprayers i used and how there placed you end up
with a mixture of spray / misting .. the streams collied
with each other. I'll try to get a clear pic of it spraying
with the lid off ..

from what i hear on rodies . airlayering or cutting a branch
slightly and buring it in the ground the method use mostly.
being a hard woodie plant.

It still can be done in this unit with no problems.

Dansville, NY(Zone 6a)

here is a pic of it spraying, this is like shooting a foot out of the top
of the container.

So whos building one ?
i wanna see pic's (smiles)

Taylor Creek, FL(Zone 10a)

Way to go, that is so great. When I run up on a real low $, yet high quality pump I think I can do this.
How long does it take to develop roots on most stock this way?
What are you rooting?

Moon Twp, PA(Zone 6a)

Sounds great! Makes it seem like even I, the mechanically challenged one, could do it. Tell us more (I'm w/ Sugarweed on this) - how longdoes it take to root, what rooting, etc... ~ Suzi :)

Dansville, NY(Zone 6a)

peppermint cuttings took 2 days and English Lavendar took about 1.5 to 2 weeks

Great thread!
From start to finished product, how much would you say this cost? (including the netpots and grow rocks).
thank you
-T

Dansville, NY(Zone 6a)

let me see if i can remember the prices of things ...

Tote , 5.00
pvc pipe 3.00
water pump , 20 to 50 look for something in the 400 gph range
sprayers , 10 for 5.00
netpots , 40 cents each
grow rocks , i think i paid 12 bucks for a bag of them.

i use them swiming pool noodles. 1 to 2 bucks each at a dollar store, just slice them up
so you can drop the netpots and grow rocks.

The water pump is the biggest expense.

The end product you want is a nice fine mist filling the tote so water collects
on the cuttings stems and runs down them and drips off the end of them.
from what i have read this is what causes them to root faster. like a wicking
action pulling the roots out of the cutting.

The only thing i add to the water now is a product called hydrogaurd , 13.00 a quart.
just takes a cap full or 2. I just love this stuff.

last batch of english lavandar i just ran last month took 9 days to root.
mints were rooted in 3 to 4 days

Moon Twp, PA(Zone 6a)

Sounds like something I would like to try too! ~ Suzi :)

Lodi, CA(Zone 9b)

I just love this thread. Thank you so much Vbsparky! My son is fascinated with hydroponics and this seems to really speed up the rooting time.
We built the bubbler for our brugs, now I want to make one of these! Great idea with the swim noodles... we used baskets and grow rocks in the bubbler, but I was always worried they would break the fragile cuttings when your putting them in.
When we get done with the pvc shelf and recover from some of the expenses... we will tackle one of these!
Thankz again for the post.

Joe, being a shopper in your home town I want to suggest looking at the kits available in the yard irrigation dept at HD or Lowes.
I got several misters for one area of my auto watering system. I haven't hooked them up yet, but will be shortly for some dementional shapes I'm planting into.

Here's one I built last year, more eloborate than it needs to be, but it works. VB's is a better design, it's always better to keep the pump inside if you can, but I had this external pump left over & built the whole thing out of mostly scrap parts. It also has a drain underneath. I just turn the 2" ball valve & it drains the whole thing fast for cleaning or refreshing the water.
