Seed Snatchin' Part VII

Seward, AK(Zone 3b)

Time to start a new thread and so we don't all snooze waitin' to load! You have to allow for those poor dial up folks who'd rather spend money on gas to go on seed stealin' sortees rather than pay for DSL or Cable! To start this one off, do you have a 'trap line'. That's a term we use up here in Alaska that originated from the days when folks set up a 'trap line' they checked out periodically. I have a trap line of plants that put out good seeds in my community, and every fall, I make raids on them. Anybody else do that? Here's the purple violas down at the telephone company. They're good re-seeders, and right across from the Chinese restaurant... a little seed collecting and a good Chinese buffet!

Ooops! Forgot to mention that this is where we left off: http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/479837/#new

Well, as yall know I slid back into Florida saturday night and on Sunday I drove 70 miles south met up with another terrific DGer and got LOADED with cuttings. Had a wonderful chat and some great coffee. I'm now beside myself and hoping to get these rooted. I also picked up Kumquat starts, copper plant and some firecrackers. I hope they will root well too.

A trap line- ha ha ha! That's a first here! Good for you!

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

ohh - Kumquat - wonder if I can grow that in a pot up here?

I want to try Kiwi too at some point.

OK ladies and gents - I am up for trying something new due to the volume of seeds I have this year.

Seed tape ideas anyone? Easy? Hard? Paper towels? Sorry, I know I should be looking this stuff up but I don't wanna! Oh - not to mention I value the opinions of the folks on this thread! Who would know better than a Snatcher!

Taylor Creek, FL(Zone 10a)

Well, I'm thinking good ole cotton string would be something to "glue" seeds to. after all, you just need something to get them to the dirt in an organized fashion. Wonder if Elmer's would work?
Just an idea.

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

hmmmmm....

Don't happen to have any of that laying around the house at the moment. LOL!! You would have to pick the one think I don't already have Sidney!

LOL!!

Nicole

Taylor Creek, FL(Zone 10a)

ncg, I'll save you a Kumquat and forgot to mention my cuttings were of about 8 different Brugs. If I get a root on enough, you'll get one of those too.
You don't have the string out of a dog food sack, or Kite String? OK, glue em to paper towels cut in strips. Good luck, maybe ms weeze will have a solution or some of those others sleeping in the back of the bus.

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

Dog food bags AHHH!!!!

You coming to the GA roundup??? :) We can do a trade! I have some really pretty monkey grass I could let you have! Oh, wait - I got that from you! LOL!!

Taylor Creek, FL(Zone 10a)

I come thru Kannapolis, at least once a month, depending on how nasty the weather is.
When is the Ga RU?

Winnipeg, MB(Zone 4a)

Hey sugarweed aren't you coming to the Florida/Alabama one??? I'm going to be there??? I have a friend who lives in Jacksonville that is coming to.
:) Donna

Zion, IL(Zone 5a)

Ahhh if you're going down to Jacksonville, make 'em take you to Mayport and party with the squids just outside the base!

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

April 23rd. I think there's around 50 of so folks signed up now! It's in Jackson, GA>

Taylor Creek, FL(Zone 10a)

Yes, I'm going to try, to go to what I can. Of course if work calls, that is a got to. I am out of money, and trying to feel my way to a new career.
Several of us are feeling the pinch $ wise. We need to figure out how to spin some of these seeds into something to pay bills with. I don't want to have a second loan on the bus.
I really want to make Okeechobee in 2 weeks. Then from there, we'll see.
Sidney

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

Ok! Would love to see you though! If you're up this way come Spring you can hone in on my part time job! The owner said he needs more folks. It's just putting in annuals and cleaning up a bit! When they give me an idea when I will let you know - you can Snatch and get paid!!! :) What a dream!

Fenton, MO(Zone 5b)

Weezin.. didn't you post one time that you saved and replanted your wave petunia seeds with nearly the same results? Someone over in Seed Trading was asking for information on that and I thought it might of been one of your experiences that I was remembering.

Seward, AK(Zone 3b)

Yep, Purple Waves, Pink Waves, Lilac Waves.. all seemed to come back fairly true the first time around. When I collected seeds from the second generation, the Purple Waves turned into very fragrant lavender petunias with dark veining... really nice.

Castro Valley, CA(Zone 9a)

Weez, good deal on your snatch & eat, lol, never heard of trap line, how appropriate LOL, I've never tried to collect petunia seeds before, is it difficult?

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

Seward, AK(Zone 3b)

Thanks, Annie! These belated wishes give me an excuse to celebrate longer!

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

Oh and HEY! I got an Ilex Sky Pencil at my plant class last night! Thoughtful landscaper brought it for me when she heard me drooling over the one there last week. I am trying to remember if I have a nice big pot home to put it in. Would love to plant a few annuals at her feet too!

Have a great weekend everyone! Probably won't be on a whole lot.

Nicole

Seward, AK(Zone 3b)

OK, NC, I had to look that one up: http://www.usna.usda.gov/Newintro/skypenc1.html Have a good weekend!

Rocky Mount, VA(Zone 7a)

Weez, I wanted to get on here and thank Blaine for the Yokohama squash & Green Zebra mater seeds he sent me. But reviewing the thread - I think he missed the bus - someone grab him by the beard (gently please, I know how you ladies can be). and retrive him.

Zion, IL(Zone 5a)

I'm here - just getting some quality lurkin' time in ,,, and you're most welcome Dyson. Thanks for looking out for me bro!

The seasons are changing and I've started thinking about shedding the winter beard again. But this is the longest it's been and with the dark raybans, I've got a ZZ-Top thing going on and am tempted to just leave it. By October I'd be ready to dress as ZZT or Gandalf from the Lord of the Rings. decisions, decisions

Today I got suckered in to escorting the DW to her college classes and loiter in the lounge areas. I'm really thinking I'll cruise the campus to see if theres any conifers with cones in reach and stop by Great America on the way home to see if I can get to any cones on the Dawn Redwoods. I'll take pics today if there's any success. 50+ temps, clear skys and light winds might just melt the snow cover.

Taylor Creek, FL(Zone 10a)

First let me say thanks to Weeze for the Poppy seeds and Blaine for the Yokohama seeds. It's been like Christmas in the mail.
My DG Brug donor is Grakay. She wrote in a thread that she lived in NE Fla., had taken cuttings as insurance against a frost, and her trees were fine. Well I did a quick Mapquest and e-mailed her.
No moss on this stone. She is a bubbly little doll of a lady transplanted from Philly. I got Whiskers, a couple of orange that aren't looking too well, some pinks and some others I'll have to identify when they mature. She sent me a picture of her white one in bloom and it made me gasp. Of course we even gathered up some "on the ground for a week" cuttings. They were sprouting, and we took it as a sign that they wanted to be "Saved". It was a great time.
While I was gone my helper decided to re arrange my garden. He moved 3 Hawaiian Snowbushes, and I am now out there telling them why they want to live. Don't know wheather to feed em or not. All the leaves have turned and I don't think they are decidious. They are borderline here anyway. Any advice will be appreciated.
That/s right Annie, the word is "Airplane".

Seward, AK(Zone 3b)

Well, it's a crisp morning in Seward, but sunny... well, not morning, but almost 1pm, my time. My day starts later on Saturdays and Sundays. I spent a good part of my morning sorting seeds out of my tote. It have to either get rid of seeds or buy a bigger tote. A bigger tote would be a too big to carry, so I guess I have to administer a little bit of tough love to myself and thin it out. I've already weeded out a shoe box full, and I'm not half done. Ah, the trials of excessive/compulsive seed collecting, trading and hoarding!

Zion, IL(Zone 5a)

Weather is beautiful, the snow is melting but the gates to Great America were locked!

Fine - while waiting for the DW and after reading a newspaper, I wandered around and found what I think was a philodenron monstrosa where the mature leaves get the cool splits.... well as luck would have it a piece broke off but was so long it had to be stuffed up my hoodie to stay warm. It's dangling in the aquarium..

Seward, AK(Zone 3b)

I'll bet your fish are used to this.

Seward, AK(Zone 3b)

Well, its pretty quiet here on the bus. I dozed off for a bit, and when I woke, you guys were all gone. You must have all headed off to church (baggies in hand, I'm sure). Don't forget to leave something in the plate before you prune the rose bush out front!

Fenton, MO(Zone 5b)

I'm here! I've been planting some of my seeds from your snatchin Weezin. I'm getting really good germination on my seeds of all kinds and am really greatful for them and advice I'm getting here.

Yesterday I started the Scotch marigolds and snapdragons you sent me Weez... can't wait to see what happens.

:)

Taylor Creek, FL(Zone 10a)

Well went to scope out Superbowleans this morning and made Hal make a Uey when I saw some purple covering about 40' path. I got out and pulled some up. Looks like wild petunia of some kind.

Winnipeg, MB(Zone 4a)

Looks more like a phlox to me.
:) Donna

Taylor Creek, FL(Zone 10a)

Okay, it might be. Do they have the sorta furry leaves like petunias? I agree the flower said phlox, but I didn't think folage did. I'll try to get it started out the back.

Rocky Mount, VA(Zone 7a)

Sidney - carefull - will bail y'all out - just don't want too have to. - Dyson (the semi sane mission).

Taylor Creek, FL(Zone 10a)

I was leary, but did a 360 horizon search. All plant policee were watching those downtown in our fair city. BGAC;>)

Seward, AK(Zone 3b)

Looks like phlox to me, too. I'd forgotten about Superbowl.. and here I thought everybody was in church! Keep us posted on those little seedlings of yours, Kathy!

Zion, IL(Zone 5a)

That's got phlox written all over the flowers right to the spiraled bud about to break.

While in line at the grocery store, I think one of the rags said something about a mutant super-invasive discovered in FL. Something about wild phlox, lambs ear and mint. Fuzzy leaves that resist herbicide, free seeding and flowers of phlox and runs like Spearmint on steroids. Congratulations Sydney!

;-p

Taylor Creek, FL(Zone 10a)

Wouldn't ya know, well at least I prefer it to chick-weed. So I don't know my Phloxes all that well. I'll have some to all of you if you wish. It will look perfect in my alley. So far we're going to surprise everyone with roses, crepe myrtles and now obssed phlox. It'll be great.

Rocky Mount, VA(Zone 7a)

When i was a kid in Dearborn, MI. we would walk the alleys & snag a bite of produce from the gardens that bordered them - mostly maters - I doubt I will ever taste a mater as good as.
