Tazzy--love that Boogie Woogie! Looks like you blew the $$ on at least 4 colors of paint. Gee, did you need your curling iron to get the ruffles to turn out that way???

I talked to 5 different iris growers. None of them will do a spring co-op, but will consider a July one. None of them wanted to disturb the roots before or during blooming time. I'm going to re-approach them in June.

Most of the growers are "light " in Intermediates & Dwarfs but will have plenty of Tall Beardeds for us. Am I the only one looking for variations?

Sand Springs, OK(Zone 7a)

Am cutting back on the smaller ones they take up space and you get half the bloom >most IB, BB, MTB, MDB ,.DB only have from 3 to5 blooms per plant . Where TBs have from 6 to 8 blooms , so you get twice the bloom in same space .

Cedar Rapids, IA(Zone 5a)

I hadn't thought of it in that way. The Dwarfs & Intermediates bloom earlier than the Tall Beardeds, so I'm looking at them as a way of lengthening my iris blooming season. Dwarfs & Intermediates are also shorter, so I can use them in front rows. On the other hand, one TB bloom can easily equal 4-5 of the shorter varities.

Besides, Walker the Wonder dog only breaks stalks on the TBs--he jumps over the shorter varities! :)

Moerkerke_Damme, Belgium(Zone 7b)

Maxine, it is cold here and the temp. is about +/- 1°C the past two day it is about
+ 4°C but this evening it can be -2°C and stay that way for a couple days.

Patty; Wanda, give me more...........lol

Palmyra, IL(Zone 5b)

Ohhh I like the second one you posted, very pretty.I wish the paint fairies would show up here with some expensive fairy paint. You'd think with all 12 acres of woods they get to live in here, they'd sell the painted to me cheaper.Still looking for flower painting fairies.lol.Jody

Deer River, MN(Zone 3b)

My experience way up north is quite different than Tazzy's. I love the MDBs and medians because they give me considerably more reliable and abundant bloom than the TBs. It's true that each individual stalk provides fewer blooms on the smaller beardeds, but they are so much more vigorous clumpers with so many more bloom stalks (and therefore, blooms) than the TBs in my garden that they are the highlight of my iris bloom season. I am also sick to death of having to stake TBs to keep them upright. That is a problem I never experience with the smaller beardeds. I have also found the smaller beardeds to be much more tolerant of less than ideal growing conditions than the fussier TBs. They are more cold hardy, rot resistant, much less attractive to borers, and willing to bloom freely with less direct sunlight ... in my garden, anyway.

I think the early bloom these littleuns provide is especially treasured here in the North where winters are interminable and bloom season is all too brief as it is. I, for one, survive each sub-freezing day of winter in eager anticipation of the first MDB and SDB blooms of spring!

Isn't it grand that there are irises to suit and complement every growing environment and climate?

Laurie

Cedar Rapids, IA(Zone 5a)

Tazzy--Love your Liason! I've planted it 3 times & killed it 3 times. Don't think it likes me....

Laurie--I'll take my Iris any way I can get them! LOL

How about Aphrodiasiac? Only had a bit of orange & white paint available for this one....

Or maybe Az Ap cause it bloomed it's fool little Intermediate (IB) head off this spring!

Steppin Out is an old TB and so vigourous that I have to divide it often. The bright markings & big blooms stop traffic here. Never have to stake despite heavy spring rains & wind. I can always count on it to bloom!

Don't feel too bad about 'Liaison', Wanda. I've tried it and killed it a few times myself. Never have managed to see it bloom in person. I think it's one of those cold-wimpy TBs. Then again, I lost 'Aphrodisiac' before it ever bloomed, too, but I acquired it from a very unreliable source, so it might not even have been 'Aphrodisiac'. 'Stepping Out' is not a reliable bloomer for me, but it is absolutely hardy and tough as nails, and when it does bloom, it's stunning!

'Az Ap' went nuts here this year, too. Such a lovely clump with oodles of bloom!

Laurie

Lenexa, KS(Zone 6a)

All I have are TBs and only a few of them so I'm up for a wide variety of iris in a coop, Wanda. Definitely plan to add IB and BB and want to add more TBs as well.

Tazzy - you are such a tease with those pretties! I'm gonna have to give Liason a try despite Wanda & Laurie's experiences....hopefully I'm far enough south to succeed.

John do you know what your AVERAGE cold temps are in winter there?

Western, WI(Zone 4a)

Another one that I forgot to write down the name when taking the picture. Shame on me!!

That's a nice clump (and photo) of "Stepping Out" Wanda! Hmmmmmm.......... very nice.

Tazzy - Rustler is one of my favorites! It's been a good grower for me too.

And Liason is a finicky grower - in many places I think. I finally just got rid of it, because the increase was so few and it didn't bloom all that often here either. It is such a gorgeous iris too.

Here is another favorite of mine: ART DECO. I love those lines.

This ones is for Wanda and all BB lovers,( Miss Nellie ) this has buds and blooms it head off ,She also is rapid increases and makes a fast clump ! Is just a outstanding Iris better than most TB and etc . I really like them all but have to have lot of color and blooms in my limited space. Liaison crock after 4 years . Its a bad iris If you have to baby them toss them .
happy New Year to all, and wishes for the best bloom season in years.

Patty, great to bring us in that thread about hybridizing, found that one on lauers amazing! Shows us step by step.....the men was very nervous, because he sound a bit funny to me with lots of a's and o's and u's ..lol
Sorry i know that's not decent of me but i must laugh anyway...still a'm lol

Brenda, our winters are heating up more and more.(there is a name for it but i can only say it in dutch:BROEIKASEFFECT if i translate this literally :GREENHOUSE EFFECT) We even have the impression that winter is moving towards januari. I think if they doesn't stop the smoh that cars produce and change to fuel were they drive on. Our planet will be lost for the next generations. I remember winters when i was little, starting in november. And oft end Okt. with temp's of -10°C and more. But now we get that mostly in jan. and even than the temp's are not steady.
Today it's +5°C and tomorrow it's can be -5°C

Margie, Love that 'Art Deco' you are always slamig this cuties around my ears.
I'll just start getting being weird with all those iris pics! Is something wrong with me are am i just like you guys?lol

Sand Springs, OK(Zone 7a)

welcome to the world of crazies

Lenexa, KS(Zone 6a)

John - we have the same weather issue here.....Greenhouse Effect. And I would agree that our winters here are briefer and warmer than when I was a child.

Palmyra, IL(Zone 5b)

John,
you opened a can of worms.
You don't want me to start about the greenhouse effect. It's all greed of the big oil companies and all others big companies cheating and lieing about there pollution.Very touchy subject with me.Our President won't even go to the meetings on global warming. That burns me up.If he doesn't want to I suggest sending someone like me that does and will.LOL.
If I was in office there would be some major changes.lol.If they don't happen soon.
There will be no more Iris or people to enjoy them; if we don't all try to do our part. That means changing our voting priorities. This administration has done more harm than all of them put together. They even want to drill for oil in our national forests. Are they crazy.Don't they Get It!The all might dollar$$$$$$
Here's my thoughts on pollution,ect.

http://members.gardenweb.com/members/nature_farmer

I told you not to get me going.I even went to D.C. to protest a few years ago, remember to shut down the the World bank.We did it too !!!
Out of all the countries in the world the USA produces 100 times more trash than all the other countries put together.I'm going to stop now.Sorry about taking over and changing the thread. But global warming is very serious and should be addresses pronto.
Heck I can't even drink my well water out of a new $4500 dollar well. The nitrates are to high.Great for plants deadly for people. If anyone one else wants to vent about global warming and polution,I can start another thread.LOL.Thanks for putting up with me.
Note: my DM says"most people are sheeple" they just go with the flow to scared to speak up or because the government says all is well: they are very miss informed.Who beleives what the government says look at the cover-ups and scandles.I'm done.Again I'm sorry, but glad to get the truth out in the open and off my chest!.Jody

Moerkerke_Damme, Belgium(Zone 7b)

I be believe you Jody and agree with you very much. Everyone should be aware.
Yes, i bought recently a new car but it drives on gaz that is less dangerous. I hope they start quick with ethanol. They say to start in the next years up to 3%.
