Anyone doing a spring Iris co-op?

Palmyra, IL(Zone 5b)

I want to be included.Thanks,Jody

Cedar Rapids, IA(Zone 5a)

Sounds good to me! Does anyone have some good connections? I'm looking for more Intermediates.

Deer River, MN(Zone 3b)

I've never ordered from him personally, but I know Larry Lauer of Lauer's Flowers is willing to customize "deals" for larger orders. He has a very nice selection of newer medians. If someone wanted to organize a median co-op, he might be a cooperative grower to work with.

notmartha,
Thanks wow good prices.

Cedar Rapids, IA(Zone 5a)

egarden has good prices, but I'm embarrassed to say I have most of them already or near identical blooms. I'm looking for unusual spotted or marked Historicals, dwarfs or Intermediates I don't have.

Cici was kind enough to share some of her Intermediate windfall with me. I put them in late, so I doubt if I will see blooms from them this year.

Palmyra, IL(Zone 5b)

Wanda,
I'd bet you have some of about everything.LOL.How long have you been gardening?
I'm heading out to plant a few I received in a trade.I hope they make it.I know I shouldn't mulch them. It's 45 today and I haven't finished putting in my bulbs either.Gotta go get this done while I feel good enough to plant them.LOL.Jody

Cedar Rapids, IA(Zone 5a)

Jody, Mom says I had my first watering can at 3 years old. The rest of the family planted vegetables & Daddy bought me Nasturum seeds for spot. I
ve been blessed with great teachers for over 50 years. And now, I'm blessed withDG friends to trade with & teach me more!

Jody, get those babies planted! :)

Cedar Rapids, IA(Zone 5a)

Tell them you heard about them from Tulsa iris society . We have done a lot of business with them and now there twice as big and PAUL is selling a lot for Keith Keppel so he can have more time to hybridize

Palmyra, IL(Zone 5b)

What a good idea Tazzy.Jody

I wanna play too

Here are a few other places worth contacting to see what sort of co-op deal might be able to be worked out. They all offer wonderful selections of dwarfs and medians:

http://www.gormleygreenery.com/ - Rita Gormley (membership secretary Median Iris Society)

http://www.hmwalk.com/ - Bill & Ada Godfrey

and last but certainly not least, the incomparable small iris creations of the Willotts (DWiris@aol.com).

Lenexa, KS(Zone 6a)

Ok....I'll ask the dumb question........

Can you buy iris rhizomes and plant them in the Spring? I always thought they were a late summer thing.

Deer River, MN(Zone 3b)

Most of the commercial sellers don't start shipping orders until early July, though some will start in June. They will continue to accept orders all summer.

The optimum planting date will vary in each climate. Here in the frigid north, I prefer to get all my irises in the ground no later than the end of July to give them adequate time to root in before winter. In the hottest climates, folks can plant year round.

Laurie

Lenexa, KS(Zone 6a)

Thanks, Laurie....I'm a late August to mid Sept. iris planter here. Thought I might be missing the boat on something.

Sand Springs, OK(Zone 7a)

I get mine early and plant in pots so in Sept. they have big roots and I just slip in ground .

Cape Cod, MA(Zone 7a)

Count me in too!

Cedar Rapids, IA(Zone 5a)

Well, I contacted several growers and no one will sell to us for spring planting.
I'll talk to them all again in June, and we'll see what we can do then.

I personally move & plant iris in late April as they're breaking ground. Can't move them once they're ready to bloom or just after. Too stressful on the roots.

Western, WI(Zone 4a)

Count me in also on your Iris coop.

I'm like you Wanda, I move them whenever I have time, but never when they are blooming.
Prefer to get them in the ground here in Wisc. by mid July or 1st of Aug. so they establish roots and will not be heaved up by the frost.

Maxine

Palmyra, IL(Zone 5b)

Oky Doky,I'll be waiting.Hurry up June.LOL.Jody

Lenexa, KS(Zone 6a)

So Tazzy what is "early" to you? Do you get them in June/July and pot up and then plant in ground in Sept?

Wanda - are you just moving your existing iris around or dividing them? Do you acquire new iris in April? From who?

Curious what everyone is doing. Trying to learn this iris thing.

What about for Sibs or Japanese iris......are those done earlier in Spring?

Western, WI(Zone 4a)

I move any and all iris whenever I get the time. Only not when they are blooming or there has been an extended drought.
I pot up iris in the spring and then sell them on my plant sale

Hope this clears up the mystery.

Maxine

Sand Springs, OK(Zone 7a)

June July.they do better than ones in Aug or sept ,But NOT for Louisiana's or sib. or spurias or jap.In north, eary sept .Here late sept .If any company wants to mail these varity before sept .watch out they know noyhing about iris .

Lenexa, KS(Zone 6a)

Thank you ladies. I'm learning.....slowly.

Deer River, MN(Zone 3b)

Sibs do best for me when purchased and planted just as they break dormancy and start growth in early spring. If I wait until late Aug or Sept, they won't have enough time to root in before winter here in the far north.

Laurie

Cedar Rapids, IA(Zone 5a)

I move my Siberians either early spring as they break ground or in the early Fall. They seem to do best with a bit of rain after moving them.

My Beardeds? I like to rearrange most anytime. I do alot of digging & moving as they break ground in the spring. If I move a "hunk" with dirt entact, they'll still bloom well in April/May. But I got some Iris in trades last April that bloomed a few weeks later. The beardeds are tough and will put down roots in most weather. I saw some bloom this spring after my business partner forgot & left them outside bareroot in a plie all winter!

The main problem is actually keeping them dry in my clay ground. I have been planitng them in raised clumps (3 inches or so) so I can mulch everything else in the beds but keep the iris dried out. This seems to work.

Remember that the root that bloomed last year will never bloom again but grow babies to bloom in subsequent springs.

Hey,I'll trade in April/May. I go hunting for blooming clumps of Historics in small towns. It's sometimes the only way to be sure of color. I'll stop & talk the owner out of a few, trade or buy. I have no shame.

Sand Springs, OK(Zone 7a)

TB BB MTB IB ,any time even in our heat can be moved i do my own right after they bloom but buying them from other states still do better potted till sept . here in Okla.

Palmyra, IL(Zone 5b)

Tazzy,
I hope they do well here,Because I was out planting all those you sent me,by drop light.LOL.Did you get yours planted?Jody

Sand Springs, OK(Zone 7a)
