Midwestern Grass Seed Conservation

Chicago Botanic Garden has agreed to partner in the Millennium Seed Bank project with Royal Botanic Gardens in Great Britain. Other U.S. participants are Ladybird Johnson Wildflower Research Center in Austin, Texas, and the U.S. Bureau of Land Management in Washington, D.C. Chicago Botanic Garden will collect seeds of Midwestern tall grass prairie species and send them to RBG. There, seeds will be stored at 68 F in an underground vault. There are more than 1,500 Midwestern tall grass prairie species, many of which are endangered.
