I think I have evidence of the value of grafted tomatoes. This year has been horrible in Maryland for crops. I planted 10 tomatoes. One was a successful heirloom graft. 2 others were hybrids (Garden Gem and Garden Treasure) from Univ of FL. The others were also indoor seeds of other heirlooms.
All the indoor seedlings of the heirlooms but one are dead. The grafted heirloom is thriving. The 2 hybrid brandywine plants are "staying alive".
I planted them all the same at 8" deep with crushed eggshells and slow release organic 4-6-6 fertilizer. I watered them all the same. They all got the same sunlight. And the dedicated heirlooms turned yellow and died while the grafted one didn't.
Don't go nuts explaining about soil diseases. Yeah, a third year in the same spot; I pushed it. But the grafted one is thriving...
OK, next year that bed gets solarized and tomatoes go over one next to it. But last year they all did great.
Grafting on resistant roots works!
