Japanese maple tree leaves turning brown rapidly.

Moorestown, NJ(Zone 6b)

This tree is very well established and has been consistently healthy for at least 20 years, and it was so until a week ago, when it started to develop patches of brown shrunken leaves. At this time of the year the leaves typically start turning colors, not shrinking and dying off like this.

There has been rain this summer, so I don't know about lack of water being plausible. I have not fertilized the tree.
