Crataegus siting mistake

Eau Claire, WI(Zone 4a)

Well, here I go again. I'm not sure what I was thinking when I planted this Cockspur Hawthorn within 8' of the driveway, but after visiting the Minnesota Landscape Arb I quickly realized it was a mistake. These trees can get very wide, which I was aware of (and admire), but somehow failed to consider when planting. I'm now I'm left wondering when would be the optimal time to move it. Should I do it now? This fall? Next spring? There's room to move it several feet further back from the driveway, so that's not an issue. BTW, it was planted from a container and the bare ground is where a mature Northern Pin Oak that died from wilt was recently removed.

Yah that looks too close to the driveway. If it will get enough sun, just moving it back seems like a good choice. Not sure if now would be a great time to move it as the long hot summer is getting going, but maybe if you babied it this year.

I think it's best to move it. It won't be a problem for a few years, but the difficulty of moving it later rather than sooner is a big concern. The main objective now is to create as little stress as possible on the tree, which is why I asked about the timing. It was only planted about a month ago and my initial thought is to do it now. I can get water to it, so that's not an issue.

I think do it now-it hasn't had a chance to settle in yet so this will minimize the stress.

Does your variety have thorns?

It's a thornless hawthorn...

So, you don't want any of the canopy to overhang on the driveway? Is 7-12' over the driveway too much?

This tree branches low and wide. We do need to keep access for trucks (LP, septic, etc.), and I don't want to limit the trees horizontal growth, which is one of its main attributes. I moved it yesterday and was surprised at the new root growth since the initial planting. Hopefully it settles in and someday comes close to the beauties at U of Minnesota arb.

I'm sure it will Pseudo, you already know its a happy camper judging by the new root growth.
