FIRST FLOWERS ALMOST SUMMER 2015

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Here is a Thread I have, accidentally, started to follow.
The "Daylily Forum"----"Clump Thread.

If you wanted to know names of your DL's--this may help.

Oncidium orchid possibly Sharry Baby the chocolate orchid.
Swamp milkweed which smells sweet and vanilla like to me.
Orange noid DL I call pumpkin orange
Anemone Virginian a native. Hope this is what they are supposed to look like

Darn you and your Anemone virginiana. I had one sprout from last year but then quickly got overgrown by its neighbors. None of the seeds I winter sowed came up either. I guess I'll have to stick with Anemone sylvestris as that does well for me.

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

Seq, I have two pots of seedlings nestled in another garden, growing up for you. And I'll start more with the current crop of seeds. The seed heads are more interesting than the flowers.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

The tall plant I showed you all a while ago, and someone said it looks like a Mi;milkweed.
Well--it is about to bloom--it has a cluster of pink buds soon to open.
Which Milkweed would that be?

I took a pictures, but something has gone whaco with the uploading and my
card does not load up like always.
Now it is showing a window called "Removable Disc "E". When I click on it, it is saying
that it can't open it --it has to know what program created it.
I clicked on "search"--results--"File unknown"--Windows does not recognize it.

I don't know what to do.....

Before--I would just stick my memory card in the "card reader--which is connected
to my USB port--and it would pop up all the pictures that are on the card.

I have NO idea how, when, and why this has happened....
Any Gurus out there? I have pretty pictures I took and now i cannot show you.

Maybe I should post this on the photography Forum?

Probably Asclepias incarnata, Swamp Milkweed.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

David--thanks---Is that one worth keeping in my raised bed?

I remember about 3 years ago asking someone for seeds to "Butterfly weed'.
So--I either got seeds or seedlings and I KNOW I planted them in this spot.
Been waiting 3 years for it to grow big and bloom. This year is IT!
but--I think I was hoping to get the orange, low growing Butterfly Weed--
NOT this 3' tall thing.

Here is an earlier picture i took and asked here what it is....
You can see the pink buds on it...

Certainly looks like Swamp Milkweed. Perhaps the seeds were mis-labeled? Asclepias incarnata is the most popular Milkweed for home gardens.

Oooh, thanks Sally!

Very nice Catbird! Looks like you'll get a lot of blooms from that one this season.

daylilies here, too!

'Romantic Returns', 'Broadway Nights', 'Purple Glory', lost-tag plum color...

and a baby 'Julia Childs' rose I won in a not-raffle at ATP

'Purple Rooster' monarda is strikingly purple. I'm keeping this one weeded & mulched, doing my best to encourage it to get big enough to divide.

Mimosa is in bloom, looking good after having the diseased branches cut. Despite the constant battle with the seedlings, I do love this tree... filled with bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds when it's in bloom... and it's Jim's favorite, so I hope it survives!

Love the leaves on Sedum seiboldii

Finally got some pics of what's going on out front... but, I'll only share some of the "good ones".

My favourite Day Lily, the Black Eyed Susan Day Lily. (Oh! There's Dave in the background... yes, my little Gnomey's name is Dave)

Speaking of Dave - Here's the Miss Manners that I got from David and Pat at last Fall's Plant Swap. They're getting ready to bloom! The Yarrow (from..??) is doing really well, but not ready to bloom yet.

Newly-installed Dianthus bottom right, along with many of the "just tossed on" Liriope (I never did actually install them, I just plopped 'em on top of the soil and they rooted, so I tried to fortify their perimeters with compost a bit). Also one lone little Pansy that had gotten lost under the run-amok Mint.. which is cut waayyy back now.

Anyone have any idea what this is? It has volunteered in the front Big Bed, full sun, really really good drainage.

Last but not least, the ground cover Sedum that I installed as a teeny 3.5 inch pot 2 years ago. This is one plant that I don't mind if it runs amok, it does it so cooperatively. :)

Jill--

Love that purple Monarda! never seen on that color....
I also remember the Sedum Seiboldii in a HB when I was working for the grower.
I remember how each leaf was edged in red--and hpow pretty that looked.

Re my problems with my camera--Aina was here--spent an hour trying
to see what was wrong.....WELL! Nothing!!! Somehow I had taken all the
pictures without my card in the camera--OR--not in there right. I don;t know
how that could have happened....All is OK now!

Here are some of the pictures I wanted to show you.

1--This is one of the lilies I grew from seed that Nancy gave me

2 &3--This is my favorite DL. The mauve one. It gets so buried under the Red Lilies!
I only have 3 of these growing. It looks pink (my camera!) but is a nice mauve.

4--Red Volunteer DL's and veronica in my YUK bed

5--My "Big Pot" coming along on top of a bigger pot in the WS bed.
"WS" means the bed where my big "Wintersweet Shrub" was growing for 17 years.
The one Paul came and we dug it up and he took it to his parent's house.
That is documented as well in pictures...some hilariously funny!

Oh WOW Gita, that "Big Pot" is filling out so BEAUTIFULLY, I love it!!!

Love those Day Lilies as well, that red one is gorgeous!! =)

Speedie--(we cross-posted)

your #4 picture looks like Begonia Grandis--a perennial.
It will come up all over the close-by area every year. It blooms in pink flowers.
It also, completely, disappears in the winter....but--it will be Baaaaaaack....

Edited to say-I have plenty of the "Red Volunteer" DL to share.
It is one of the clumps my daughter dug up in early My--and I just divided.
Do you want me to mail you a couple of the divisions? It will be 2 years
before you see these bloom--as it has been a while....

gorgeous blooms you guys!

Ater paying my dues by shopping and housecleaning, I spent some hours in the yard. I saw my first this year Maypop bloom, dug maypop suckers for Muddy, moved a giant clump of common purple spiderwort to the back of the yard, then a Centaurea montana cornflower to the empty spot. I figured with the wet soil and rain coming, those things will never blink. Rearranged some hastily plant sweet potato slips into a nice bed. Divided and potted my Clivia. I had sort of done it a few weeks ago but wasn't happy with the result, now I am. Repotted a Phalaenopsis that is due to bloom. Wired my Dendrobium onto a chunk of cedar branch, something new to try, and it's hanging out with the orchid cacti and bromeliads under the front dogwood tree. I think I'll put the other orchids there too and they can have a party. Gave the big Red Epi a major haircut as it seems to be done blooming for now.

With all the rain predicted, I should go make a ditch in front where it's been overflowing.

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

oh yeah, meant to say my Red Volunteers started blooming today!

Somewhere in, MD(Zone 7b)

Gita, thank you but I think I'm gonna wait for a while to see how my newly installed rescues fill things in before I add anything new. But, thank you!! ♥
One of those rescues that I installed is a Geranium "Johnson's Blue", so I'm really hoping it'll take up some space! =)

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

WoW--Sally! You did a lot ! This time of year--it all works because of the weather.
More rain coming tonight! God have mercy!!!
My tomatoes are growing HUGE! They love it!

I think your Orchids will do well hanging from your tree.
That is how they grow--right?
I have one flower bud on my NOID Orchid cactus (the pretty one)...
Hope there are more. I had to hang the pot in a wire planter to keep it
steady. One of the wire hangers broke. In the process--several pieces
of the plant broke off. Now I have 4 more sections of #2 rooting.
I am sure they would love to find a new home....

Did you have to un-pot your Clivia totally before dividing it?
I want to remove a small side plant from mine--and give it to Paul,
but not sure how to go about it. I tried from the surface, but all I
accomplished is breaking off the little leaves of it.

This is the pretty-blooming one. The one with the intense orange clumps of blooms.
The one with the rounded leaf tips....

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Geez! We three keep cross-posting.......
I never finished showing you my pictures......

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

To comtinue......

1--Here is the Swamp Milkweed about to bloom.
Should i save it? The raised bed has limited space--
but I would love to see the Monarchs.

2--Here is my YUK bed--looking West. So pretty when it fills
up with DL and other stuff. The only things I have planted in it are the
small annuals along the edge.

3--Here is my YUK bed--looking East. Still all full of pretties...

4--Are these Cheyenne Spirit ? I hope so--as I did not know I had them.

5--First Crocosmia bloom--in my Kitchen Side Bed. There are 3 stems--
more to come! 2 years of waiting paid off.....

Gita, they sure look like Cheyenne Spirit to me.. someone please correct me if I'm wrong. And, it's funny you call that your "Yuk Bed" 'cause it sure looks yummy to me! =)

I forgot to say "THANK YOU" for ID'ing that Begonia for me. I thought it looked like a Begonia, but can't figure out for the life of me how it might have gotten in there, so I figured "Naahhh, can't be!". Well, I guess it can be! :)

Here's a shot of my rescued white Hydrangea out back... first year of blooming, I guess it appreciated finally being taken out of that pot! =)

And, here's a distant shot of how the back "shady benches" are looking as of about 3:30 this afternoon. Got the little Gnomeys in there, doing their thing. :)

Woofing down some chow at the moment----then I want to goout and mow
my lawn before the rain comes....Hurry....hurry....chomp....chomp.....

G.

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

Gita, heaven help me, but may I have one of those (non Red) orchid cactus you are rooting? No rush. That is the pink one?

The Clivia (longer skinny leaves) had to come out of the pot. It had six shoots of various ages (mom and five babies). I was hasty the first time and rough. I could barely budge anything from the thick tangle of roots. I broke one of the babies and had to discard it. I got a pair off and potted them. I trimmed the roots and potted the mom with two babies. But I hadn't really cleaned the root mass and picked a too-small pot...I just wasn't feeling good about the quality. But the newly potted plants seemed happy enough.

So today I pulled mom and babies. I swished the roots in a bucket of water. With more poking I got almost all of the old soil out. Maybe even the roots had relaxed a bit in the weeks since the first job. I got another baby off nicely. Now I have a nice pot of mom and one baby, a nice pot of twins, and a nice pot of one shoot. That's two more pots than I need...

Gita, keep the swamp milkweed. It is a better behaved and prettier plant than the common one all over my garden. But my last swamp milkweed only lasted a couple years. So maybe you'll get to replace it anyway in a few years.

Very pretty speedie!

Here we go with a more proper Summer thread:

http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/1399290/

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Sally--
You can have as many of my "spectacular bloom" Epis as you want.
Yes! The hot pink/magenta bloom ones.
This one grows really fast...so I started another 4 from big pieces that fell off the plant
as i was trying to put the pot into a sturdy wire-shaped HB. I wanted something
that would hold the HB as even as possible. You have seen how lop-sided it grows.
Then the side with thw heaviest fronds gets to be too heavy and the pot tilts.

It is not easy to handle this big, heavy Epi. Besides--it has "invisible', hair-like
thorns all over. Wear good gloves.

If you like--I can pot up a 10" HB for you with the cuttings. I have some that have
been rooting for a long time. This way--you will get the plant going earlier.
you won't have to mess with it until way later.
IF you have any old WIRE HB hangers--that is what you want to use.

OK! I will let my Swamp Milkweed grow in my raised bed. How far will it spread?
I DO like the tropical one better, though. More color....

This one? Right??? g.

Thumbnail by Gitagal
Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

yes, that pink one. I'd be happy to start with a small one though. I really don't want another 10 inch hanging plant to have to find room for in the fall, this fall.

Remember to go to Jeff's new thread

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

OK~! You get a started/rooted one in a small pot.

Yes Maam! I am going to the new Thread, G.
