February means hearts and flowers!

Central, LA(Zone 8b)

LOL!!! Tell that to the weatherman!!! We were budded out in January and then we had a hard freeze and nothing is out now but the Loropetalum.

Little Rock, AR(Zone 7b)

I spent the whole afternoon outside working on cleaning up my back yard. I was doing things I don't normally do until over in March. There are so many things coming out now! A lot of my hydrangeas are budding out. My toad lily is coming up, other lillies, succelents, bee balm, etc. I just afraid we're going to have another big freeze and it will kill everything!! I was working in a cotton shirt with the sleeves rolled up and I actually got hot over in the afternoon. Make some progress but have a lot lot more to do!!!

Northeast, LA(Zone 8a)

I walked around looked between painting today. My lenten rose are budded no blooms .

Cindy you are normally way ahead of me. My hellebores are blooming like crazy. Weird year. My butter bur is coming up too. That's what is in the next to last picture.

Same here. Found several hellebores blooming or budding on Sunday and some of my early daffs had buds. Just in time for a good hard February freeze. Oh, and of course the Tulip Tree has big fat buds so it will be a goner for pretty blooms this year for sure. Y'all are always just a little ahead of us with blooms.

Central, LA(Zone 8b)

We're gonna get down to 27 degree's Thur. night. So we for sure will be starting over after that. LOL!!!

We decided to put another pool in so I have been busy with the installation of that. It's an above ground and the same size as the one we had for 20 years but it's bigger. I've had to adjust everything about a foot for it to fit. It's together and we are filling it with water. They still have to cut in the skimmer and lights and hook up the pump and filter. It's also taller than our other pool. I have a lot of repair work to do for it to look right.

Mary just came in and said Hello to everyone.

Ripley, MS

Hello Mary, hope you are feeling better ! I just read a weather blog saying the chances were good for a southern winter storm next week, yikes !

Little Rock, AR(Zone 7b)

That's what I figured Sandra!! Now that everything is blooming out it's all going to get frozen!

Elaine that's what happens to my tulip tree most years. I have one that is 40 years old and huge. It's magnificent the years the buds actually open. Most years it seems about the time all the buds are starting to open we have a cold snap and the whole thing turns brown!!

Central, LA(Zone 8b)

Hopefully tomorrow will be her last chemo. She won't see the Dr. until 3/5/15 and we're hoping then they will do some test.

Little Rock, AR(Zone 7b)

I know Mary will be glad of that!!! Tell her I said "hello" !

Ripley, MS

Cindy and I both are going to be in TN next week and that is why I was looking at it. We are hoping to get together because her SIL is about 20 minutes from Cayla. Of course it is a 3 hour drive north of Cayla for her to get to Nashville, so she may have to cancel if this possible storm becomes reality.

YIPEE !!!!! I am going back to my own beauty shop today for a hair cut, manicure and massage !!!! I have not been since Oct and I am really looking forward to it. I also got to see Pat yesterday for the first time since Oct, she came and spent the day with me. I needed to do updates on her tablet so she came here. I called for her am eye appointment, she is probably going to have a cataract, so we are going in 2 weeks to see about that. She refused to go until I was free to take her.

Laceys Spring, AL(Zone 7a)

Yay for Mary! I know she will be glad to finish this round of chemo, and we're all praying this has done her good!

Sandra, enjoy your 'spa day'. Sounds like a great way to spend a chilly day. Glad you and Pat could visit. I can't believe time has flown by and y'all haven't visited since Oct!

Little Rock, AR(Zone 7b)

Sandra I know you and Pat were really glad to see each other! I haven't had a massage in a long long time and I'm thinking I'm going to have one some time soon!

Richard really had a fun day today. The owners of a restaurant in Pine Bluff are retiring and closing their restaurant this Sat. (He is leasing the building to someone else who is changing it to an italian place). It's an institution in town. It's been in business since the thirties. The current owner has owned it since the early 70's. It's across the street from Richard's old business and he knew the owners extremely well and ate there all the time. They serve a plate lunch or burgers and sandwiches. One burger (the Perdue Burger) was named after Richard many years ago. I decided to take him over for one last burger. His daughter and granddaughter also went. After we all ate Perdue burgers we walked across the street to where his old company was located. Two businesses now share the building. He got to walk around the building and reminisce with his daughter. It was a great walk down memory lane for him.

Laceys Spring, AL(Zone 7a)

Charlotte, this is when we need a 'like' button for posts! How sweet, and what a great afternoon for Richard and all of you.

Central, LA(Zone 8b)

I like both of the above post, also!!! I hadn't realized that you hadn't seen Pat with all that had occurred since Oct. You were swamped with everything going on but I can just imagine poor Pat worrying about Yall with all the time on her hands. In reading your post Charlotte it made me wonder how Richard would react to a photo album. I know you have tons of old ones but maybe put together one of all his memories like today so they won't be lost to him.

Everyone had plans here tonight and Jimmy & I were left to ourselves so we went to the casino for crab legs. They gave Jimmy a free meal b/c he had never had a card and me a 5% discount on my meal. After we ate until we couldn't eat any more we decided to make our donations. Jimmy won $4500.00 on a penny machine and we left immediately. LOL!!! He came home with all of it but the state taxes they withheld for him. Rebecca swears we are lying to her.

Laceys Spring, AL(Zone 7a)

Jeri, I'd have left too! Better to leave while you're ahead! I'm quite sure they wanted you to spend that money in the casino! So, you can hope for a really spectacular Valentine's day gift, lol?!?

Little Rock, AR(Zone 7b)

Wow I know you all were excited with that win!!! Very smart to walk away!!

The other week when he was having such a bad day and he called his daughter to come take him someplace, she brought over old pictures when she came. I think she was hoping to settle him down by looking through pictures with him. When he turned 40 his friends did a bring party for him. They even made a bound paper back book that looks sort of like an annual. I'm sure his brothers had it done at their printing plant. But it has lots of pictures and "interviews" from friends with funny quotes. He has a copy here that I looked at before. I always enjoy looking at it too as we had so many mutual friends. We didn't know each other before we met. We actually knew each other for about a year before we started dating. I met him through some friends. But I knew and was friends with a lot of his old friends. His best man at his wedding was my boss at one time. Small world! The first time we went to Sigma Chi party he was amazed at all the people I knew there. He said you know more of these people than I do!!

He has a cedar chest full of old pictures and albums. I should probably get some of those out for him to look at.

It's colder today but the sun is shining.

Ripley, MS

I want to know what is in the Perdue burger??????
Charity and Faith are here with me for the weekend, they get Presidents' Day. We are going shopping and I hope to finally get my Christmas, birthday and Valentine present ! I talked to Pat every couple of days while I was at Caylas, but just coming home for a week end left no time for us to get together. It is 45 minute drive between our houses. While Cayla was so sick everything got put on the back burner. I hope I never have to see any of my kids or Grandkids that sick again, it was absolutely horrible.

Little Rock, AR(Zone 7b)

I know it has been a very trying time for you Sandra. I'm so thankful Cayla is doing so much better. Enjoy your time with Charity and Faith and have fun shopping for all those gifts!!!

The Perdue burger is just a regular cheese burger but has crumbled up bacon between the cheese and meat. Richard ordered his cheeseburger that way so many times they finally named it after him and put it on the menu as a regular item. A lot of places now put bacon on a cheeseburger but they usually just put strips across the top. With it crumbled up you get the bacon flavor but it's easier to eat and has less bacon.

Little Rock, AR(Zone 7b)

Forgot to say that the guys at the business that is now located in the building Richard's families business was in (they sold the business and the new owner eventually moved it to LR) were so nice to him. They were just young guys and I told them who he was and what he wanted to do. One guy said "oh I know Mr. Perdue - he can do whatever he wants to in here. We're always glad to have him." His grandfather started the printing company back in the twenties. Then Richard's father took it over and then all three of his sons went into the business as they graduated from college. So Richard worked with his Dad and other two brothers. None of the grandchildren were interested in it and went other directions. That was the reason they sold it. They had about 50 employees other than themselves.

Central, LA(Zone 8b)

We lucked up and missed the freeze somehow, last night. It only got down to 39. YEA!!!

LOL!! Elaine, getting to spend time with Jimmy was my Valentine's present from Jimmy & Rebecca. They probably have plans their selves for Saturday. Hard to believe but Saturday will be Jim & my 35th Wedding Anniversary.

Our kids are out until next Thur. b/c of teacher in-service, President's Day and Mardi Gras all rolled into one.

I love looking at old pictures and have gotten a lot from FB friends & family. I move the photo to my iPhoto app directly from FB.

That was a nice size business with 50 employees. None of our kids were interested in any of the businesses that we had either. We agreed to rent out the back section of our property to a mobile home dealer friend out of Gonzales, La, last week. His lot is over stocked and he had 10 or 12 units coming in so they are here now. So far we have a triple wide, 3 double wides and a 16X80. I hadn't realized I missed any of that until the 1st one rolled onto the lot and it made me realize that I had missed it. Of course, where we were just leasing the land out I've already had to sign for 1 delivery and keep insisting that the driver's pick up after themselves and run off customers that aren't suppose to be here. Nothing is simple!!! LOL!!!

Little Rock, AR(Zone 7b)

Yes it was a fairly large business. It was a commercial printing company doing business in a large area for fairly large companies. They also sold office furniture and had a showroom. Most of the furniture was special order for banks, and other large companies. All the grandkids were girls except for two boys from the same family. It would have been hard for them to have come up with the financing to buy out the others interest even if they had gone to work for the company.

GRRRRRR! I just lost a long post! That is so frustrating! I'm not going to try to re-create it though.
I'll just say
Happy Valentine's Day to all of you and send you all a big hug!

Happy Lundy Gras to everyone!!! The party has been going strong here since Friday and won't
slow down until Wed. after mass. Hope Yall have a great holiday!!!

Little Rock, AR(Zone 7b)

We have a snow/sleet day here. Not sure what's on the ground but the streets are covered in something icy. I think mainly sleet. It's thrown Richard into a tizzy!! He's upset because we can't go anywhere and thinks the power is going to go out. We are fine. Plenty of food to eat and don't see any danger of power going out as the trees don't have ice on them. I have plenty to do in the house! I've been trying to clean some things out. Need to work on that today.

Our weather forecast is for really cold weather for the next 10 days. I guess we couldn't escape not having some kind of bad weather.

Central, LA(Zone 8b)

Wow, I hadn't realized that Yall had gotten that cold. Sorry that Richard is so upset!! We're in the mid 70's today but tomorrow night and Wed. night it's suppose to be close to freezing but back in the 60's during the day and 75 by Saturday. Crazy!!!

Little Rock, AR(Zone 7b)

I think he happened to see the local weather on tv. You know how they like to sensationalize everything. There are some counties that have power outages but they are where they just had freezing rain and not sleet. I assured him we had plenty of food and told him we didn't have anything on our trees so he seemed to be alright with that. The weather people had just really upset him. Wish we would get back into the 60's this week but doesn't look like that's going to happen!

Laceys Spring, AL(Zone 7a)

It was supposed to sleet and possibly snow last night but we only got cold temps and then it started raining like crazy around 10 this morning and hasn't stopped yet. Then the temps are supposed to drop like a rock tonight leading to freezing roads. Oh joy! Schools opened late, if they were even open today, and tomorrow the base is opening 3 hours late in anticipation of the road conditions. I'm not going in at all if the bridge is frozen. I don't mind snow but icy roads....fuggedaboutit. I have some friends at the beach and they said it's great down there right now.

Hope everyone had a great Valentine's Day. Earl surprised me with a 20-gauge shotgun! I loved it! He knew I was wanting one and had it wrapped up under the bed and I didn't even see it. Then we went to our favorite German restaurant for dinner. They have the best chocolate cake too! A girl can't have too many guns. Well, me anyway.

Little Rock, AR(Zone 7b)

We've been "frozen" in all day. We had a lot of sleet and it didn't warm up above freezing today so it's all still on the roads. Looks like it will be there most of the day tomorrow. It's not supposed to warm up much at all. I actually haven't minded being house bound. I needed the break. I never got dressed today!!! I just stayed in my nice warm pj's all day. Got a few things done around the house and hope to get a little more done tomorrow.

Central, LA(Zone 8b)

WOW!!! Hope everyone out there is safe and warm!!!

My sister just called to ask me if Jim was on Humana Gold. He is. She asked me if we ordered his medicine by mail through RightSource and he does. She told me that every month he can order $40.00 of OTC meds so I went online and registered him and placed his order. It is free. It has to be ordered by the 20th of the month. It's not name brand products. So if any of you have Humana Gold check it out!!!

Laceys Spring, AL(Zone 7a)

I can't believe no one has posted in a week! Hope everyone is staying warm. We had a big ice event last Friday-Saturday and another one moved thru last night. Got most of the tax stuff gathered together on Saturday since it was too nasty to do anything else.

I was supposed to run a 5k run but it was cancelled. Bummer about that and now I feel like a slug. I did lift a few weights and did a few exercises on my mat at home but it's just not the same. I'm thinking I may re-do one of our bedrooms and get a treadmill/dreadmill. Of course I could go to the gym, but on those days I just don't want to get out, I know I would use it.

I also got a few other things done around the house yesterday afternoon but nothiing to brag about. We watched 'Grand Budapest Hotel' that I had recorded a couple of weeks ago. It was really a good movie and then last night it won several awards. I was going to watch 'Gone Girl' or 'Birdman' this weekend but never got around to it this weekend. I read 'Gone Girl' and didn't like it but several people told me they liked the movie, so we'll see. Any other movies y'all recommend? I've seen (and read) 'Wild' and loved it. And 'Unbroken'. That book is awesome too. I do want to see 'Still Alice'.

Central, LA(Zone 8b)

It was 43 when I got up this morning. We were suppose to get rain thru Tue. but other than some at night we had a good weekend here. 75 degrees. I picked up some of the mess left after the pool men left. Now I have a trash can I can't move and a wheel barrel. Jimmy is building the deck back so I'll wait until that is finished for pictures. I've got to find someone to dig 2 big gardinias and about 6 clumps of bananas up for the deck renovation.

While out yesterday I strolled the brown mess that I laughingly call my garden and the purple magnolia is in bloom along with the lorapedelum and a few narcisus. The black bamboo is also sending up little chutes AND I saw a red bird and a snake. Can you believe a snake on February 22. Not looking good for the warmer months. LOL!!!

Ripley, MS

I had Charity and Faith until Thursday last week because of the ice. Cayla rescheduled her Nashville appt until this week, so tomorrow I head to TN for Eli duty, they will be gone until Friday night.

Little Rock, AR(Zone 7b)

We had lots of bad weather last week. Mainly sleet on the ground. Schools were closed the first part of the week. There was a solid sheet of ice from my back steps to the workshop all week so I didn't dare venture out there. Don't want any broken bones. I went to the Flower and Garden show with Sarah Sat and we met Kathy Ann there. It had warmed up some Sat but was pouring down rain when we went. Yukky day. Yesterday afternoon I went down to the antique mall to straighten up after a couple of pieces of furniture had sold. When I started to leave it was sleeting again!! The temperature was above freezing but falling fast so I went to the grocery store as I actually didn't have enough food to feed us if we got frozen in. Luckily I got to the grocery store earlier than some people. It was a zoo. I only had about 4 people in line in front of me but the lines were half way down the frozen food aisles by the time I was leaving. They went ahead and cancelled school last night but the roads look ok to me this morning. We do have snow forecast for latter today. The high is only going to be 28. I guess we can't complain too much as we have really had a mild winter up until now.

My huge tulip magnolia is full of big buds. I'm pretty sure after this cold snap I want be seeing any blooms at all on it this year!! Seems we always get a cold snap about the time it blooms.

Not sure I want to see Still Alice or not. I've heard it's a fairly realistic and that the star (can't remember her name) did a good job. Richard's friend called him the other day just to talk and he told him he would come by and pick him up and take him to lunch with his lunch bunch group some time. Now every day he wants to know if his friend is coming! Every day I have to explain that he's not coming today. Some days he can't remember what the friends name is but just remembers someone has said they will pick him up. He doesn't know what year it is, what month it is etc. He can sometimes tell you the day because his watch shows the day on it. But he has been in a pretty good mood and not off on any wild tangents so that is good!

Little Rock, AR(Zone 7b)

We did a cross post Sandra. I hope the weather is clear for you when you travel to Cayla's tomorrow. I believe it's supposed to warm up here tomorrow. Is this a check up with her doctors?

Ripley, MS

Yes she has 3 days of check-up in Nashville
I wouldn't want to see it if I were in your place either, Charlotte, sometimes things are just too close to home.

Laceys Spring, AL(Zone 7a)

I understand Charlotte. My DILs mother has just had to put her mother in an assisted living facility a couple of weeks ago. The adjustment had been very hard for her and her Dad but it needed to be done.

Sandra I hope everything goes well for Cayla at her visit. And for you too during your visit.

Good grief, we have another snow system coming in Wednesday!

We got a lot more snow than what I was expecting. I don't think the weather people thought we were going to have that much. It snowed yesterday morning for a long time. Huge flakes. Then in the middle of the afternoon about the time it looked like the roads were going to get better here it came again!!! I think we ended up with a couple of inches I'm not sure. But it was really cold so it made a mess of the roads. There were wrecks and cars piled up everywhere. About 2 blocks from my house is a street that connected two other major streets. It's like a roller coaster. It's usually one of the first streets they close but for some reason yesterday they didn't close it. Of course people decided to travel on it and it was one they were showing on tv. Cars in the ditch, sideways blocking the road, stuck trying to get up the hill!! I had a doctors appointment this morning (routine checkup) and I got an email from them late yesterday saying they would be closed today. It's supposed to warm up today so the streets should clear. But they're talking about the possibility of more snow tomorrow.

We have plenty of food so we're put until the streets are safe to drive on. I did bu
y some kitty litter to melt the ice on the walkway the last go round of ice. I'm not about to let Richard walk to the car without a clear snow/ice free path!

Sandra I'm certainly praying that Cayla gets a good report at her checkup. I know little Eli will enjoy your attention!
