rooting hormones

Vancouver, BC(Zone 7a)

A more basic question to anyone who feels strongly. When you take a cutting, do you dip it in rooting hormones when
it is fresh, or after it has calloused over?
Can it have any effect on a calloused stem?
Any ideas? Barbara

Valley Village, CA

I sure do. I only know this because of an experiment that I had to do. I know for cuttings of bushes the garden department uses hormones, in the cactus and succulent department we do not, never ever, we don't have time. But this is the beauty about the plants, it's not needed, let them heal over then plant and water regularly. It's best to take the cuts just as you are seeing them start to grow, leaf out, set down air roots or after flowering. Timing is everything. Know their natural growing season, so now you need to know where they originally came. West coast/East coast, mountains, deserts, rainfall area. At the Huntington we had cut up the Epi and Ripsalis last month, this week we are planting them in the tinest pot possible. In So.CA. I guess this is the time. The Ripsalis are in flower at this time, they start to grow after they flower.Epi flower in May out here.
