Interest in Hostas waning?

Otway, OH(Zone 6b)

Thank you, can't wait to get mine. Kathy

Ottawa, ON(Zone 5a)

Well, I'm in Canada and CAN'T buy from such a group.

Quote from bleek :
OK. I give up...why is it that only 2 people ordered these Hosta's...I would like to know...We had 162 views and almost nobody liked it? I would like to learn...Please...and if it is something not so nice dmail me...Forever grateful.

10 hours later and we have 214 views and 3 people have ordered. Spring is near, be ready!

Maybe people aren't ordering because you are not allowed to sell from a forun/thread. Also, it has been repored by another member that the Lilies she ordered from you were not true to name.

Hamilton, OH(Zone 6a)

You are allowed to organize a CoOp with permission of administration. That is what Bleek has done in this case.
Your really going to slam somebody for sales mix ups, Really? Mmm! We should not cast stones when we live in a glass house, huh. Have you bought from Bleek? Maybe, you should only post about your own experience and not what you hear. Would you want this done to you?

"Maybe, you should only post about your own experience and not what you hear"

Take your own advise. and use "some of your own experience", not your buddy's who is new to DL. Have you bought from me? NO!!

Was not heresay, it was right out of the horses mouth to me on Cupid.

If it is a Coop, he should have put it on his own thread. You are wrong (nothing new) Read Administrator Terry's post below.

Seems Bleek admitted the wrong doing, which he deleted.

No! I have not bought from you and I never plan to. I use my own experience to judge people wether they are selling or just friends. I don't need to rely on my friends experience it was brought out on the DL forum and I formed my OWN opinion. My friend might be new to DL's but, she wasn't born yesterday and is not stupid.

It seems Blomma can't read! Take your own advice. You fight with more people on here than most MMA fighters ever see in a career. Nasty. Nasty,

Enough, even though the conversation about Lilies and Daylilies is mixed up, Let's hope for some warmer weather so we all can go outside and get some fresh air. We've been inside too long!

This message was edited Mar 1, 2015 11:53 AM

How can you form your own opinion when you rely on hearsay from your buddy. I listed 2 fans (crowns) and that is what I shipped and she paid for. That was all there was at 2 years old from seed when that one bloomed. Anyone raising daylilies from seeds knows that a 2 year old Daylily would not produce many fans. I was lucky for it to produce 2 fans (crowns) to sell.

How can you say you form your own opinion when it is not from your own experience. You have never purchased from me. You are blocked anyway.

Believe what you want if it makes you happy. What does this have anything to do with what I wrote to bleek ? Has nothing to do with you. You must be a very unhappy person. You sound very bitter.

Amanda started this argument and you followed like a docile lamb.

Below are my seedlings when planted, and blooming at age 14 months. It is where her daylily came from and bloomed the following year at 2 years old. All were planted 4" apart. Big mistake.

Why would your buddy give 2 positive feedbacks after she received the plants?

Sounds to me like it's time to "unwatch" this thread.

Did anyone order hostas?

Best to ask Admin what is and is not allowed.

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

Ahem. This thread started out on such a good note, I really hate to see it end on such a sour one. I'm going to respectfully suggest a couple things:

1) Please review your own posts here, and judiciously prune out anything that veered into a personal attack on anyone else. There's an "edit" link next to each of your own posts that you can use to rephrase or remove anything that you choose.

2) Anytime you spot something in a post that violates the rules of the site (and attempting to sell anywhere except a co-op thread is a violation), please use the contact us link at the bottom of the page and let us know your concerns. The sooner you report it, the sooner we can deal with it and get the thread back on track.

Beyond that, I'm just really ready for spring...aren't we all? :-)

Portsmouth, VA(Zone 8a)

Thank you Terry, I am ready for spring and I want to see some beautiful hostas!

Natick, MA

Me too! Today was perfectly balmy here at 40 degrees even though we have at least 4 feet of snow on the ground. Hoping for more above- freezing temps to continue and lots more melting.

My New hosta purchases for spring include Stained Glass (which I saw last year at local nursery and when I went back it was gone!) And Patriot.

How about you all?

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

I am planting these when all that white stuff is thankfully gone, but not until the 3500 bulbs we planted last Dec have gone by. Now I can't wait for that annual spring show to begin. So far just patches of snowdrops have appeared.

Hosta Candy Cane
Hosta Earth Angel
Hosta Faithful Heart
Hosta Foxfire Green Lantern
Hosta Glad Tidings
Hosta Lakeside Dimpled Darling
Hosta Millennium
Hosta Peppermint Ice
Hosta Radiant Star
Hosta Winter Snow

Clarksville, TN(Zone 7a)

I'm so ready for spring! I want to plant 'Stained Glass' along with more blue hostas. :)

Mount Sterling, KY(Zone 6b)

I need to rework my Hosta/shade bed this Spring. Maybe I will add some new varieties, haven't decided what. I'll check out our local nurseries when the weather warms up. That could be a while from the looks of things. So I will check out the web in the meantime lol

Portsmouth, VA(Zone 8a)

bbrookrd,

I love your garden, I added a walk way but just the cheap stepping stones. I have added lots of Coral Bells and several Japanese Maples. I am hoping to add some daylilies to the part that gets a lot of sun, the hostas there are huge so I will have to dig one up but not Satisfaction it is my favorite at three feet wide. Hopefully we can get more ideas from this thread as we wait for spring.

Otway, OH(Zone 6b)

So far I am adding:
Praying Hands
Earth Angel
Inspire Greatness
Peace
Zion's Hope
Big Daddy

Those are the ones that I have ordered.

May get more will just have to wait and see.

Kathy

Clarksville, TN(Zone 7a)

Do you have an area dedicated to hostas or will they be planted in different places?

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

We planted H. Stained Glass in 2006 from a coop from Shady Oaks and it is lovely, but I have no Satisfaction and it looks beautiful in Virginiaroses garden. Thanks for the encouragement. More snow expected tonight which is a real buzz kill as I am itching to get out to prune and clean up from the big mess from the storm. Meanwhile it is nice to see everyone's gardens in bloom.

Eden, NY(Zone 5a)

Not a Hosta, but I can't wait to see these after the snow melts. Here in Western New York, we have a heavy foot to two feet left on the ground.

Portsmouth, VA(Zone 8a)

Jennifer,
that is a lot of snow! We got a lot of rain. It is warming up though, I need to check on the hostas to see what is peeping. I dug up one last week we got so much rain it was drowning.

Bbrookrd,
thanks! I missed this the first time. Satisfaction does not disappoint and will need some sun to get the bright gold margins. I have Stained Glass and it sure is a beautiful hosta. I hope I can see some Lilies too!

Nanny23,
Be sure to buy from a reputable dealer who test for HVX. It is no good to infect the whole garden just to save a few bucks. Stay away from Big Box stores too, they do not test anything. A friend on Cubits saw coneflowers at Lowe's sitting on a table and they ALL had Aster Yellows! He would not throw them away, they were just merchandise ,and it is the same for nematodes and HVX.

katgroves,
I have praying hands planted in full shade and it is not doing well, I think I will plant it into a pot and give it some morning sun to see how it does. Your order looks like a good one!

Clarksville, TN(Zone 7a)

Beautiful, LilacJennifer. Welcome to the discussion. Chime right in any time. Are you still growing Wolverine? That's one I haven't grown ... yet. ;-)

Otway, OH(Zone 6b)

My hostas are scattered all over the place. Last summer my son and I made a flower bed on the back side of the trailer and I planted 2 hostas there and they did find. More afternoon sun but shade all morning. Kathy

Clarksville, TN(Zone 7a)

I've found the same thing with a lot of my hostas. They like some sun part of the day. The nursery tags often say just shade.

Natick, MA

I read this somewhere, that hostas being "shade plants" is a misnomer (sp?) They tolerate shade, so I think are popular for those areas, but alot of them like some sun and/or have better color when they get some sun.

Clarksville, TN(Zone 7a)

That's true. They look better with some sun. At least mine do.

Wyoming, MN

Hostas also multiply faster with more sun. They can look pretty stressed but commercial growers give them a lot of sun. I have a lot of shade and like them to look good. Yes they are shade tolerant. In the wild some varieties grow in full sun on exposed mountain sides.

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

Some of my hosts do well in part-shade/part-sun spots, especially if they get plenty of water... but all of them get protection from afternoon sun.

I've been steadily adding to a collection since we moved in here four years ago this coming May. First I rescued a few stragglers that were already here, transplanted several from our old house (it was going to rental status, and I - rightly - figured most renters don't care about fussing with plants they didn't plant.)

I am a sucker for whimsical and cute plant names, so I have a few of the "mice" series, a few of the Lakeside series, and then I have several wavy, curly ones - Pineapple Upside Down Cake, Pineapple Poll, Whirligig, Kabitan (which is FINALLY becoming decent sized in its new home), and several of the big-leaf types - Empress Wu, Guacamole, Abiqua Drinking Gourd, etc.

I'd like to add a few more this year - probably Robert Frost and Jimmy Crack Corn...and whatever else my favorite local nursery has that jumps off the bench and into my cart :-)

Clarksville, TN(Zone 7a)

I hope we have a better selection here than we had last year.

Love the big ones.

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

We have an independent nursery, run by the Amish and they always have a great assortment. Even nicer, they offer small pips (pups? whatever) in 3-inch containers early in the spring. They pot them up and charge more as the season goes on. The early bird really does get the proverbial worm. If you're down this way, give me a holler and I'll be happy to steer you to my favorite local haunts.

I do wish Rita still had her place in Jackson - I really miss our April trek to Randolph's and the other nurseries nearby.

Clarksville, TN(Zone 7a)

Some Amish folks come to the Farmers' Market here on Saturdays - May through October - so I'll be sure to ask about hostas. There are also some other vendors who bring plants and more seem to be doing so. I hope to find some interesting things this summer. I bought a huge 'Coffee Cups' Colocasia there for $10. It has been one of my favorites.

I forgot that Rita had closed. :(

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

Hosta Mania is still going strong in our Nantucket Garden. I just updated our Hosta list and there are more than I thought, but I am not ready to throw any out as I may be adding to the deer/rabbit fenced part of our property which will mean more room for divisions of these green gems.
Need to look up some from Terry's list that sound interesting (Pineapple Upside Down Cake, Pineapple Poll, Whirligig, Kabitan, Empress Wu, Robert Frost and Jimmy Crack Corn) as well as Cville_Gardener listing of H. Wolverine. But Wolverines look so scary that I am afraid to look that one up. Virginiarose has me looking for some Satisfaction! Some random views of some of the Hosta in our garden. But today we found our first Crocus so it is now Bulb Time, my favorite season. Patti
