Screening plants needed 5 metres high!

Brisbane, Australia

Please could someone advise. I want to screen our pool area but have to use a raised garden bed. The area is about 8 metres long ad needs to be about 5 metres high. Can anyone suggest what I should plant that will be evergreen, long lasting, fast growing, have a tidy habit, drop little leaves etc as it is near the pool – the plants will initially only get midday sun, once grown to two metres will get strong Brisbane afternoon sun. I would also like as little maintance as possible including not having to water… Please help…. Karen

Yucca is evergreen, and demands nothing here in the U.S. No dropping of leaves, just would need the seedhead cut back once a year. Maybe in clusters of 3's.

Good luck!

Perhaps Green Giant Arborvitae would work for you. It grows fast, is evergreen, and does not drop leaves. They grow in almost any sort of soil, are drought resistant, and are generally not fazed by freezing temperatures. I am in the deep south, and these trees also handle our heat and humidity well. A problem may be that it can get 50' tall and 15' wide when mature. An alternative is one of the medium-size Arborvitae, staying 15-25' tall.

The trees you see are 2 1/2 years old. They were approximately 8' tall and 4' wide when planted and they are now 15' tall and 6' wide.

Bagworms can seriously infest Arborvitaes and destroy them, but if they are not a problem there, the plants are very attractive.

We have bagworms in numerous varieties of trees, but I have never seen one on my Arborvitae, and I have 8-10 of them. I will need to keep an eye out for them. Thanks for that info.

I hadn't either until recently. Now they are in all seven of mine. :(
