winter is here on the Homestead...

Nauvoo, AL(Zone 7a)

Sad about Darius. shocking.

our neighbor Friend committed suicide the other day. I been "out of sorts" over that one.
I think about it all day long. Can't get it off my mind. He's just gone now. Can't imagine what his family is going through.

clutter........i can't stand it....yet , I have clutter. My husband is the hoarder around here. We are trying to fix that.

Allergies. I have so many allergies. I read somewhere on the net during the past year that we slowly become more allergic to things as our digestive system becomes more compact and congested with muck and junk on the digestive walls. Leaky Gut? etc... I Then read that Diatomaceous Earth (food grade) will slowly and gently scrape and clean the Junk off the digestive system walls so that our system can absorb the good nutrients to get our immune system back in good health. I've been drinking a small glass of orange juice with 2 tablespoons of DE every evening for 6 wks now. I also have Candida. The DE is clearing things up and I feel so much better.

Strawberries.
I tried growing strawberries in hanging baskets and it works great but even though the baskets hold more soil than the gutter system, they still had to be watered a lot. Tried growing them in a 2ft x 8ft 12inch deep Table Top Garden and they still had to be watered a lot. Current have two plants growing in 5 gallon grow bags.(20). It's the Maximus Giant Strawberries. I need a watering systems for the strawberries if I am going to grow them in containers. Our summer heat drys them out too quick for me to keep up with constantly.

Suicide is very shocking and very sad for so many reasons.

Where do you get food grade DE?

I had no trouble keeping my berries wet enough in the towers but they did not have enough room the way I had constructed them. I am hoping this system will be better. Have just a few small holes for drainage but if I see the soil is turning to mud I will drill some more holes. I am really hoping this works.

Cricket, how is work progressing on the house? And how much planting have you done? Still too cold here to plant anything out.

I had a really nice day today. It started raining late yesterday evening and through the night. Cleared up by this morning but it was cold and breezy. We left early this morning and went to the seed and plant swap and sale. There were classes, demonstrations, door prizes and snacks. I went to three classes. Container Gardening, Seed Saving and Beginner Bee Keeping. I enjoyed them all and learned a lot. Also got a lot of heirloom seeds to try.

After the swap we went and got a bite to eat. Then we headed out to see the Turtle Man. He was appearing at a local sporting store. When we got there the like-minded him seemed a mile long so we opted out. We really enjoy his show but there was no way we were standing in line that long.

We went on home and I took Remi in and gave her a bath so she could stay in and play with DH for a while. They both enjoyed that. I set about getting some projects done in the garden. I finished planting my first tier in the hanging strawberry garden project. It looks good. I filled another half barrel with wood chips and compost and planted a nice wine berry cane I dug up in the yard. I set up another water barrel , actually a 32 gallon trash can, and emptied water in it from the big barrel. I finished emptying the big barrel into some buckets and made a better foundation for it. Then I set it back up and put some of the water back in it. We are supposed to get more rain Monday into Tuesday so it should fill back up. That gives me 87 gallons in the front and 40 gallons in the back yard. That will help in summer.

I finished up outside and went in for supper. I enjoyed some red beans and rice I cooked yesterday and fried a deer burger to go with it. Mmm Finished off the night with a good talk with my sister and now I am ready for bed.

Biggs, KY(Zone 6a)

I had a productive day in the garden yesterday. I planted three tires of sweet corn with seven stalks in each tire. One tire was planted with older seed so if it does not germinate I will have to replant and I will consider it succession planting. LOL

After I finished that I got my friend to come weed eat a spot fore where I want to put two more planting beds and a couple more tires. I also want to get a couple cattle panels to put between the two beds and grow some yard peas and my Cukes on. After he did the weed eating I used the shovel to dig up a couple clumps of obstinate grass and some dandelion tap roots. Then I put down my ground cloth. That is all I can do at the moment. I have to get one of my two by sixes cut before I can hammer my boxes together. Then I will dig some more compost and wood chips.

I also got my tater boxes made. They are sturdy cardboard boxes covered with plastic. I filled them partway with compost and wood chips and put two seed potatoes in each box. I plan to fill the rest of the box as the plants grow. I hope they do well.

I am sick in bed this morning. I have a very sore throat, headache off and on and a stuffy head. I also had a stomach ache but thought it might have been from too many cough drops. I am missing church this morning and I hate to. I was thinking I might get a hot shower and see if I feel like going but I would not want to give this to anybody else.

Baker City, OR(Zone 5b)

Cheryl, take the shower anyway, you'll feel better. Tell me what yard peas are.

Biggs, KY(Zone 6a)

They are also called asparagus peas. I think they are technically a long bean.

Have not felt up to taking my shower yet. Did not make it to church. I am running a low grade temp now.

How can it be food grade ? It is a poison.

You feed it to those you wish to kill?

"quote from website" There is no life without Silica! Some say that, "Silica is the most important trace mineral for human health!" Silica plays an important role in many body functions and has a direct relationship to mineral absorption. The average human body holds approximately seven grams of silica, a quantity far exceeding the figures for other important minerals such as iron.

How Diatomaceous Earth Works

When Diatomaceous Earth is taken into the body it starts working in 3 different ways:

1st: As it moves through the stomach and digestive tract, it attracts and absorbs bacteria, fungi, protozoa, viruses, endotoxins, pesticide and drug residues, E-Coli, and heavy metals. These toxins are trapped and passed out of the body. In addition, any larger parasites that happen to be in the stomach or digestive tract are killed by the D.E. All of these activities result in a much healthier body with less sickness. We often hear the phrase "I just feel better" with our DE users. This better feeling comes from all the "junk" being removed from the body and by giving our immune system the "jump start" it needs.

2nd: Diatomaceous Earth is very hard. On the hardness scale where diamonds are a 9, DE is a 7. This is very important, because as those millions of tiny hard and sharp DE cylinders pass through the small and large intestines, they "scrub" the walls. After only a few months of taking DE, the intestine wall is no longer coated with mucus and molds but CLEAN!! The advantages of this are:

1. Regular bowel movements (This is the #1 comment everyone makes about DE)
2. Healthier Colon. This is especially important as we get older. A clean healthy colon keeps away polyps, cancers, and ulcers. Today, many are spending thousands of dollars to get colonics to do the same thing as DE does. Many users report increased energy and needing less sleep. This is a result of all the food and nutrients that are taken in being better absorbed into the blood stream. With a coated colon--many nutrients never get absorbed.

3rd: A small amount of Diatomaceous Earth gets absorbed into the blood stream as silica. One of the benefits of Silica is that it helps to destroy bad fats. Everyone that we know that is taking DE has lowered their cholesterol by 40-50 points. Everyone is also amazed at how their high blood pressure goes down.

The benefits of silica are many. In today's grains, there is actually a shortage of silica. Years ago, the silica found in our foodstuffs was adequate, but with today's hybrids and depleted soils, only about 1/3 of the silica needed is supplied in our food. DE is a simple and inexpensive way to get the silica your body needs.

The intake of silica through DE can help you in many ways:

1. Lower High Blood Pressure!

2. Lower High Cholesterol! - Most are reporting 40-60 points lower after only 2 weeks on DE.

3. Sore joints feeling better - Osteoporosis is a symptom of the aging process. As calcium in our body system depletes, our bones become brittle and weak. Taking only a calcium supplement can not correct or stop this threatening and crippling disease because the body cannot assimilate and make use of the calcium without the presence of silica. Evidence suggests that, instead of affecting healing, supplemental mineral calcium, on the contrary, accelerates the leaching away of bone calcium and thus hastens the degenerative process of osteoporosis and similar diseases that affect the supportive and connective tissues in the human body. For osteoporosis, silica can stop the pain and even restore the bodies’ self repair process. Silica is responsible for the depositing of minerals into the bones, especially calcium. It speeds up the healing of fractures and also reduces scarring at the site of a fracture. Even when calcium is insufficient, the body can turn silica into calcium that the bones need.

4. Healthier skin – Overseas, DE is used extensively as a health and beauty product for hair, skin, nails, bones, and joints. Tissue degeneration accelerates due to aging when connective tissue develops an increasing inability to retain moisture when left unassisted. Silica can help slow the degenerative process of connective tissue. With silica, vitality and life, which are often lost as the years accumulate, can be naturally maintained or even restored to your skin. Collagen, largely made up of silica, is the glue that holds us together. If our body has enough silica, the collagen will make us look younger. Silica helps with skin problems and injuries including itching, rashes, abscesses, boils, acne, calluses, warts, eczemas, burns, frostbite, benign skin sores, insect bites and bed sores. If you regularly follow a silica regimen, your skin will keep its young look.

5. Hair That Grows! - Hair is nature’s greatest beauty enhancer. Hair deserves to be pampered. Hair at 90 micrograms per gram is almost as rich in silica as are healthy bones, which contain 100 micrograms per gram. Silica is a major component of hair. Using a good silica supplement (such as DE) should be part of your ongoing hair care program for revitalizing hair. Silica helps to prevent baldness, stimulates healthier hair growth and assures beautiful shine, luster and strength.

6. Teeth and Gums! - Hardening the enamel, silica prevents cavities and preserves teeth. Silica also prevents bleeding gums, gum atrophy, and recession that causes the loosening of teeth, which could ultimately lead to tooth loss. Silica effectively fights ulceration and the decay of bones and teeth and also lessens inflammation.

7. Toughens nails - Your nail plates are complex protein structures that grow four to five millimeters per month on average. With silica supplementation, fragile nails become normal within a short period of time. Silica will beautify the appearance of your nails and improve their hardness, making them shinier and less prone to breaking.

More Benefits!

Silica lowers bad cholesterol and raises good.
Silica fades age spots.
Silica stimulates metabolism for higher energy levels.
DE has a negative charge and bacteria have a positive charge. It is believed that it sweeps bacteria out of the body by trapping it in its honeycomb shaped skeletal form.
Silica supplementation helps repair and maintain vital lung tissues and protects them from pollution. By maintaining or restoring the elasticity of lung tissues, silica reduces inflammation in bronchitis.
It acts as a cough decreasing agent. Silica tones the upper respiratory tract (nose, pharynx, larynx) and reduces swelling because of its positive action on the lymphatic system.
Silica supplementation keeps menopause free of stress and helps to prevent many unwanted side-effects.
Cancer can not survive in cells that have the correct levels of Silica.
Silica works with other antioxidants to prevent premature aging and to preserve youthfulness.
Silica can help prevent kidney stones and heal infections of the urinary tract. It is a natural diuretic which can increase excretion of urine by 30 percent, thus flushing the water-excreting system and restoring normal function to these vital organs.
The presence of sufficient silica in the intestines will reduce inflammation of the intestinal tract. It can cause disinfection in the case of stomach and intestinal mucus and ulcers. Silica can prevent or clear up diarrhea and its opposite, constipation.
Silica will help normalize hemorrhoidal tissues.
In regulating and normalizing the bowels, silica has a pleasant side effect; it can alleviate lower back pain, which often troubles the elderly.
Silica proves effective with female discharge, abscesses and ulcers in the genital area and cervix, as well as mastitis (especially for breast feeding mothers).
The intake of silica acts as a supportive treatment for inflammation of the middle ear. Because of the beneficial effectiveness on the lymphatic system, silica can be used for swelling of the lymph nodes in the throat.
Has anti-inflammatory disinfecting, absorbing and odor binding effects.
Silica can normalize circulation and regulate high blood pressure (hypertension).
Silica can decrease vertigo, headache, tinnitus (buzzing of the ears) and insomnia.
Silica can help diabetes by promoting synthesis of elastase inhibitor by the pancreas.
Silica can help arterial disease by strengthening the blood vessels. Studies confirm that with age, silica disappears from the aorta, the heart's key blood vessel thus weakening its critical connective tissue and resulting in a greater cardiac risk.
Silica can help prevent Tuberculosis.
By improving the elasticity of the joints, silica helps rheumatism.
Silica has inhibitory effects on coronary diseases.
Silica can help avoiding or alleviating Alzheimers disease by preventing the body from absorbing aluminum and may flush out aluminum from the tissues. Silica can stimulate the immune system.
Dosage: Take 1-2 tablespoons per day mixed in some kind of liquid or food. There is no unpleasant taste. Since it will not dissolve, stirring several times while drinking will prevent settling. Some have experienced higher energy levels, so it is probably better not to take it right before sleeping. No worry about getting too much--any excess silica not needed by the body is automatically eliminated through the blood stream, kidneys and intestines. "quote from website"

Sounds too good to be true to me.

Baker City, OR(Zone 5b)

I'm going to ask the vitamin dept lady at the co-op about it.

Biggs, KY(Zone 6a)

Does it come in a pill and where do you buy it?

many many years ago, they put DE in feed bags and house hold grains to kill weevils. It dried out exoskeleton insects. Now days, they just want to spray everything with pesticides
It didn't kill anyone way back then

I only know of the powder form

I have been sick then last two days with a stomach virus but I felt good today so I got some work done. I did the trimming in the yard. I only have a small electric trimmer so we have to hire somebody to do the most part. It is all hillside so I would not be able to do it anyway.

I planted beans, squash and cucumbers today and I weeded the cauliflower and carrots. The okra I set out died so I will have to sprout some more. :( Chipmunks are about to destroy my corn. Peas are up pretty tall and should be blooming soon. Berry plants are growing well and starting to bloom. I am working on another piece of gutter I can get some more plants.

I scored a nice deal at Lowe's a few days ago. Two fig trees for less than half price. I paid just $5 each. They are Chicago Hardy and are hardy up to -20. I plan to plant them in half barrels for the first year. I love figs. We had two huge trees in our yard down the bayou and I will be glad to them again.

Hope everyone is doing well.

Nick, have you gotten the new house set up yet?

Baker City, OR(Zone 5b)

I was also thinking that Nick might be too busy with the new house, chickens and probably garden to be yacking on the internet, but I'm sure he will be back eventually.

Sorry you've been sick, Cheryl, but glad you felt well enough to get outside to work today. Your garden season is way ahead of mine. My peas are up about 2 inches, just barely putting out tendrils to reach out for something. They are bush peas, the snap pea type, no shelling. They make an unruly mess of vines that try to climb each other, but that is good because they shade each other. Climbers would fry in our sun and wind. Today I weeded peas, onions and garlic. I'm trying to hurry because I will have surgery on Monday morning to take care of a hernia, and expect to be next to worthless for at least a week afterward. Prayers would be appreciated even though hernia surgery is pretty routine. I will have lifting restrictions for at least a couple of weeks.

I think winter is over, finally! Maybe we need a new thread that says Spring!

Biggs, KY(Zone 6a)

I have had the thought of a new thread also but I have long forgotten how to do it. And likely could not accomplish it on my Kindle. It is convenient but has it's limitations.

So sorry to hear you are having health issues. You will surely be in my prayers. I hope all goes well. You take it easy afterwards and follow doctor's orders. You will heal quicker that way.

Now DH has the virus. It is going around. I am surprised I caught it as I never catch what goes around. It is a bad one to be sure. Worse on the joints and muscles than on the stomach. I never threw up but I did stay in the bathroom most of one night. The rest of the time I was down with muscle and joint pain and pain pills did not help. But they did put me to sleep.

Lewisville, MN(Zone 4a)

Just ordinary stuff going on here.
Farmers Market opened Saturday. Great turnout of vendors & customers.
I sold about 100 tomato plants & lots of eggs. Some hanging basket items, too.
Here's a new summer thread.
