This looks like a heliconius to me but i haven't been able to discover what kind. You can't see it in the photo, but the antenae clubs are yellow and so are the legs. I've never noticed a bright red dot on the inside wing near the body of the various heliconius that come from the passiflora. The little slice of outer wing peeking out is orange with a thin black trim, but from the inside wing pattern it looks like there could be barring or patches on the outer wing. I did some very specific searches on the internet and came up with 4 and 5 hits. good grief, i usually get at least ten thousand hits even when i make a mistake in the search criteria. Any ideas? Thankyou.
Butterfly ID Please
Looks like Dryas iulia - Julia Heliconian to me. See http://bugguide.net/node/view/6358 and

The small red dot may be a parasite.

Thank you shorthog...some of the images look very much like my butterfly although i've had a lot of julias come out of the passiflora and they have been much smaller than this one. still, i see the image of the yellow clubs (i don't know how common that is) and the red dot so i suppose this is just a big julia...granted i don't examine each julia i see this closely and there are a lot that i don't see, so i feel pretty comfortable with your call (but i can't imagine how i could have missed those yellow clubs in the past). Very much appreciated.
