Is bamboo hardy in zone 5. I'm thinking about getting the clumping type.

It depends on how low your temps get, nett. Some bamboo will withstand temps of 0 and minus degrees F.

I have read that several varieties are hardy to zone 5. They perhaps would fare better if they were bedded down for the winter with straw and given some protection. They are all hardy to different temps.
