Dh home
Dh left again for china today
parents are in from Ca to visit and they brought their dog..... sigh.... mean dog to Lucy. :( she is not a nice dog. Snapped at Savannah too and Lucy ... its going to be a loooong week.
trying to get the garden back in shape
building a new sign for our front entrance and doing landscape rearranging
lots of garden stuff going on here ...
hope you all are well and enjoying our last weeks of summer.... where did it go ?

Pleasureville, KY(Zone 6a)

Thanks Lou, was wondering if everybody was still alive and okay.

Sue, don't talk like summer is all ready gone. I am hoping that we will have some real summer, and not the hot humid stuff we have been having. Sorry the dog is being such a meanie to Savannah and Lucy. Will they be there all week? Hope you had a good visit with your DH. I bet the time seems to fly when he is home.

Hey, Bernie, gonna mosey on down to WK for the RU? I will have to check my schedule to see if I am in school that weekend before committing myself. Would love to, but will have to see.

I am still canning and freezing stuff from the garden. Today froze about a 5 gallon bucket of tomatoes, and a 2 1/2 gallon bucket of green/red peppers, and then snapped about 7 gallons of beans which I will can tomorrow night. I am in school all day tomorrow, so won't get to it until about 5:00. We just broke them and DH put them in the fridge in the garage. I will wash and can them tomorrow.

We had a horrible storm come through last Saturday night, trees down and crops blown over. Our power was out from 6:30 p.m. until about 2:00 p.m. on Sunday. DH did get a generator hooked up to his freezers in the garage so that all his fish wouldn't spoil. It was a borrowed one, so he is shopping around to buy one big enough to run the freezers and the refrigerator in the house. This is 3 times in the last couple of years that we have been without power for a day or more. Now watch, if he buys one, we will never have another power outage in our lifetime!

The weather has been kinder too, which I really like. Seems like our drought has broken, as we got rain during the night last night, in addition to what we got last Saturday. Total was about 2 inches in all. Not much by some standards, but enough to green everything up.

Marcy, check in and tell us what you have been up to.

Joyce, you too. Wondering if you have completely recovered from your broken foot/ankle? Heard your pond tour was a success.

Ric any more beautiful pictures you have taken recently? wren (over on the pet forum) How Was Your Day? has some super photos of some catapillars and butterflies that she raised in captivity. You ought to go take a look. She has been posting pictures all this week.

Last Saturday about noon, I had a nasty fall. Sprained my ankle, and scraped up my whole leg on the front. Walked with crutches about 3 days, and the leg is a solid mass of scabs. When I have to go out, I make sure I wear long pants, or a long dress/skirt, so DH won't get arrested and jailed for wife abuse!

Then on Tuesday afternoon, one of the puppies wandered away, so spent 2 days worrying about her. I did walk the woods on Wednesday, looking for her, but didn't find her, and had to be back home to dress to go to visitation at the funeral home. I called all the neighbors and told them to be on the look out for her, but beyond that, there was little that could be done. Thursday morning, DH woke me up, saying, come in the kitchen, I have something to show you. It was the puppy, who had wandered into the next door neighbor's house. We were both over joyed to have her back home.

DH's DBIL passed away last Sunday morning, early. Visitation was on Wednesday, and funeral on Thursday. He had leukemia, and got a bad infection from an absessed tooth, which got into his bloodstream. his wife (DH's sister) had a stroke several years ago, and he was the primary care giver for her. She is paralyzed on the left side, and needs assistance with everything. Her son is looking into putting her into a rehab hospital to see if there is any more that can be done so that she may regain some use. Beyond that, it looks like hiring someone to stay with her, or put her in a nursing home. A very sad situation.

Well, I typed my life history, or rather the last month's history, but I have missed you guys. I realize there is another cyber place that has claimed many here, but am hoping that they will check in from time to time to let us know what is going on in their lives.

Cincinnati, OH(Zone 6b)

THANKS Lou for the new thread!

FINALLY got a break from the hot weather!
We've been doing some new projects around here.
Part of our Garden setup was based around Wu's love of trampling thru the plants.
So many of these items, fences, etc are being revamped. We've also decided to take the Boardwalk completely around the yard.

Bonnie, Wren and I talk Butterflies often on the 'Other' Site....lol!
Thanks for thinking of me!

New Madison, OH(Zone 5a)

Huggs everyone!
Thanks Lou...for the new thread!
Time just gets away from me....sorry. The heat was terrible. I didn't do much while it was here...except complain...lol! Not that ..that did any good!!!
Bonnie....hope you are recovering nicely from that fall?
Let's see...I think the last I was on...my daughter was in from Florida.
We had a blast with her here. She is a mover and a shaker...just like her dad. She had a big cookout for us all...here at the house. She bought all the food...and did most of the work too...wouldn't let us do much! Had her brother and family...her kids and their families too. Older brother , Mike, couldn't make it as he was in Canada on business...but I think there were 16 of us here!! It was a fun time!
The next week after she left, was a big letdown..so didnt do much of anything.
Now this week is our great Darke Co. Fair....started yesterday!
We get free passes for life...because we were married 50 yrs last yr. Can't beat that!
We went last night..but didn't stay long...what a crowd! I don't do well in those kinds of crowds!!
Think we will keep to the daytime hours from here on!
Hope you all have a wonderful day!!!

Columbus, OH

Lou, I think it's cooled down enough I can send your plants! Woo hoo!

I've been crazy busy with life and work. DH is riding in Pelotonia today!

Seymour, IN(Zone 5b)

Good to see everyone! I missed you all. It's been better weather than in July, but we still have been having some extremely humid days. We get up to fog and it lifts but stays overcast , hot and humid. What a weird summer. The gardens are looking like they are very stressed and like they usually do in late September. My gardening efforts feel like hospice care. Tending to the dead and dying. My cutting gardens seem to be late so they are still blooming and I do have plenty for my bouquets. It's not summer to me if I don't have a big bunch of flowers on the dining room table and the patio table. We have been sitting on the patio and reading alot and enjoying the antics of the squirrels, birds and hummingbirds. We never did get many butterflys this year. I love this retirement life in the summer. I don't like the winters much but at least I don't have to go out if it's bad outside. Have a good weekend everyone. Today is our 45th anniversary but I don't think we be celebrating . Our daughter came up to visit and take us out to lunch. Thats enough for us. Lou

Pleasureville, KY(Zone 6a)

Well Happy Anniversary Lou. That was nice of your daughter. I doubt my DS even realizes how long we have been married!

You hit the nail on the head, seems like I am doing respite care for many of my plants. Have entirely given up on the annuals, and have been concentrating on all the perennials, so that they will have a decent chance of coming back next year.

I had school today and was planning on putting a canning of beans on when I got home, but was tired so napped rather than doing that. Will can them tomorrow after church.

Marcy, that is about what all of us have been doing this summer. It is disappointing to wish for sping all winter, and then to be so disappointed when we get weather like we have had this year. Wish we could mix the winter and summer temps and get a decent ambian temperature. Now I am setting my hopes on Florida weather being relatively warn this winter. Watch it be colder there than here in Kentucky!

Good to see you Celene. What is Pelotonia? Riding what? See nosey questions.

South Point, OH(Zone 6a)

Found this. Pelotonia is a grassroots bike tour with one goal: to end cancer

http://www.pelotonia.org/about/history/

Seymour, IN(Zone 5b)

Celene, just give me a heads up when you send them so I can be watching for them. Have a good Sunday!

New Madison, OH(Zone 5a)

Hey everyone!
A beautiful day here...cool..sunny ..almost perfect!
Hope you all are getting the same!
Went Saturday to the fair..during the day. We left after eating supper there...as again..there were too many people!
Didn't go yesterday at all. And haven't been today yet...not even sure if we are?
I grew up at the Greene Co. Fair. Our church had the big dining hall there, and parents were there from dawn to dark..working. I was in 4-H...so I was there too...EVERY day! I also worked in that dining hall a lot. But seems as I have gotten older, it's not as thrilling as it once was!
Guess I will go see what else I need to get done here today. Take care all!

Pleasureville, KY(Zone 6a)

Well, it was a beautiful day here today. First thing I did was to get out and weed one flower bed. Gosh, I had neglected everything while I have been canning and freezing.

DS and his SO spent last night, and they made roasted tomato sauce today. In between, DS went fishing, and caught several fish. He was thrilled. We finally got the sauce in the jars and processed. They had 6 quarts. When I make mine, I put it in pint jars, but they love spaghetti, and usually make enough for 2 meals, so they like their sauce in quarts.

DH picked a 5 gallon bucket of beans today, but he will be giving them to a lady at church. I have canned all that I am going to can.

DH and I are talking about going to the state fair tomorrow. He borrowed a generator from a friend of his who lives in Louisville and needs to return that. So since we are already close to the fair grounds, he wants to go and look at the livestock exhibits.

They are really having problems with his older DS who lost her husband last week. She is not able to stay by herself, so the siblings are taking turns going to stay with her. That is not going to work in the long term, but until her DS decides what needs to be done, that is what is happening now. I really think that DH is wanting to go to the fair, and after we have been there, he will plan on staying with her.

One thing for sure, I need to mop my kitchen floor tomorrow. I am almost sticking to it.

Bonnie sorry to hear about the loss . sure hope it all works out . have fun at fair. don't eat to much.
i m so behind on my canning ... uhg.... bad tomato year for us .... not many canning tomato's around. i am not paying 1.99 lb either. ain't gonna.
Well kids are in school
forgot to feed Lucy this morning
parents leave tomorrow
having dinner with them tonight
got new outfit and hey it fits !!
did some whip cream shots about 7 min ago
talked with Tim in china. not good news on his job expectations ..
grocery day
hot and humid here

decided to plant 50% of my plants in grow beds this fall. pots are to hard to care for during winter . then watering in summer is a PITA.
that way don't have to build as many hoop houses.
fall is in the air . Where did summer go ?

Barberton, OH

I'm still here. As usual for me on Sun I did too much of the wrong thing the wrong way and my back told me all about it. So did my therapist but he taught me a few maneuvers to help. Now when i do the things I'm not supposed to, I only do it for a short time, then rest. Things have to get done, but not all in one day. The weather is cool enough that I can wear my full anti-mosquito armor including head net and go into the back 40 to work for a bit. The gardens are at a stage that they don't require as much work. Frying peppers are ripening so they will need freezing. Tomatoes are starting to ripen, slowly except for cherries. Most of those never make it into the house. Enough for tonight. Shopping tomorrow, therapy on Fri....................Herman

Pleasureville, KY(Zone 6a)

I did the grocery shopping today, after I had lunch with Janet. We hadn't gone to lunch since we were planting the gardens. So had a lot of catching up to do.

After that, had a little time after getting home, and rested up for Bible Study tonight.

So really nothing much going on here. I thought it was supposed to be cooler, but it was up to 90 today!

please send out some T&P for Cookie. Her mom is not doing well. She is back in the hosp. Please send her any healing thoughts of comfort or prayers. . She sure could use some.
off and running to soccer

Pleasureville, KY(Zone 6a)

Sorry to hear about Joyce's DM. Sending t & p's for the whole family.

thanks Bonnie i will pass it along to her.

New Madison, OH(Zone 5a)

So sorry to hear about Joyce's mother being back in the hospital. My prayers are with her and the family.
Hi everyone.
Took lil kids to the fair last night and dropped at least 60 bucks! Glad we only have to take them one night!!! But they had fun...so that's what counts!
Guess we will go back tonight for one last time. It ends tomorrow.
Dave has the weekend all planned out for us...lol.
First a flea market show in Portland, In...then tomorrow night...the big car show in Eaton. I should be about exhausted by Sunday!!
Then next weekend we have the kids overnight...plus their cousin! Jeannine's sister's boy. Her dad smokes...and he has asthma...so he can't stay there. When Jeannine and Jackie..and hubbies are doing something together..we usually keep him too. He's not a problem ...and gives the kids someone else to play with.
Grocery day today...so gotta get movin here. Have a great day everyone!!

good morning
well still hot out

hey folks
been crazy busy
had to deal with SSI with Jess. they gave her to many food stamps ? 452.00 and i thought it was a bit " to g ood to be true ?"
LOL so i had her be cautious and she had 300 for a back up, so they took that.
kids had soccer 4 games this week

mama got in a tiff with the president of the soccer association.
Marcy have fun with the grands
have a great 4 day weekend Ric. what are your plans ?
we forgot to bring LUcy in one afternoon. she got a whole 30 min outside off a leash ..... came home a slobbering , foaming mess. wtih the biggest grin on her face i think she had fun.
no rain here either.
tomorrow is farmers market and kids want to spend some money they earned this summer.

Pleasureville, KY(Zone 6a)

Yesterday set a record for heat this year. 107 at 6:00. Boy it felt like you were stepping into an over just walking outside.

Same old thing here. I am going to the closest casino today. Meeting my DTS and we will have the buffet lunch, and then play the slots for awhile. At least it is something different.

Cincinnati, OH(Zone 6b)

Well I just got off the phone w/ Joyce and got her permission to post this.
She's doing well w/ her leg and the Surgeon is tentatively saying the screw will come out in 4 weeks.
Then she should be able to go to a walking boot.

As most of you know her Mother was diagnosed w/ Cancer last year.
At her age she opted not to have treatment.
Well her Mother had been in the Hospital for the last 12 days.
The Cancer has spread and is now in her lungs.
She is in a center at Otterbein that is the stage between Hospital and Hospice.
From what she described, and my experience w/ Dad, it sounds like she's shutting down.
Cookie is spending most all her time there now.
She has no internet connections so I will be her contact here.
Feel free to call me for other info if you need it.
She's hard to reach by phone but I'll pass any and all posts on to her.

Ric

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

Please tell Joyce that I will keep her family in thoughts and prayers.

Cincinnati, OH(Zone 6b)

Will do Chele!

sending T&P for her and her family
Bonnie i can't find your apple dumpling recipe ? ! again can i get it from you pretty please ... i looked and looked , can't seem to find it in my file's nor in the dmail i searched. hmmmmm. mystery
would realy love it again if you could mange to scrouge it up fer me again.
i think i know basicaly most of it ...
thanks

Cincinnati, OH(Zone 6b)

Start w/ Apples?

:P
BRAT !!
i did google this recipe and came up with some similar but they used Mt.Dew ?? and i think that is gross IMHO . and some used 7Up
her recipe is with orange juice and i think its much nicer.
i may experiment with the doughs.

Pleasureville, KY(Zone 6a)

Sue. it uses Crescent Dinner rolls
Peel and core apples.

Place a 1/4 apple on each dough triangle. Sprinkle with cinnamon and sugar (I leave it up to you) according to your tastes.

In a sauce pan, heat 1 cup orange juice, 1/3 cup sugar and 4 tb butter. When butter is melted, pour over triangles that you have placed in a pan sprayed with a non stick cooking spray. Bake 375 for 30 minutes, or until dough is brown.

This tastes like you slaved away all day.

So sorry to hear about Joyce's mother. I am sending t & p's her way. Wish there was a way we could all pitch in and help her by sitting with her mom, and letting her have a few minutes to herself. I know she wants to be there and do it, but I know that after a long stint, you welcome even 5 minutes away.

When I thought it couldn't get any hotter without spontaneous combustion, we topped yesterday. Now this is not official from the weather station in Louisville, but local thermometers registered 109 about 5 this afternoon. Now that is hot.

Talked to a friend in New Orleans this morning, and they are expecting up to 20 inches of rain from the tropical storm, with another possible hurricane heading their way. I would be thinking about moving out of there.

This message was edited Sep 3, 2011 9:27 PM

Bon's thank you

got tomato's in dehydrator and some green beans. cranked it up to 155 . hope it helps with this humidity in the basement .
got one more 25 lb box of tomato and then i think i m done ! ? with tomato's
honestly i wish i did more corn but just didn't have the energy this year.
welp time to get busy

Columbus, OH

Got rained out of my soap show today. grrrr

Seymour, IN(Zone 5b)

It was 104 degress yesterday, and we woke up to rain and it's only been in the sixties today. Quite different, but a welcome relief it is not the total end of summer and the true beginning of cool weather. LOL

Was lazy all day and did a sum total of nothing! Oh weel! I just getting lazy in my retirement, because I can always do it tomorrow whatever "It" is.
Enjoy the rest of the holiday weekend everyone. Lou

Pleasureville, KY(Zone 6a)

We got just a sprinkle of rain about 5 this afternoon. Need lots more. It has sure turned cooler, and it will be nice sleeping with the windows open. Well, until Mr. B can hear all the night noises and starts barking!!

Lou, that is the good thing about retirement, IT doesn't have to be done today, there is always tomorrow. Just don't get in the habit of putting it off indefinitely, then nothing ever gets done!!

Clelen you had a perfect opportunity to demonstrate the soap, why waste it by closing down?

Anybody got anything planned for tomorrow? Is there any festivals or fun things to do in southern Ohio or Indiana. Everything in Ky is far down in Southern or Western Ky, and it would be closer to drive to your states. If anybody has any ideas, let me know. Trying to get my DH out and away tomorrow, and me not having to cook!

Cincinnati, OH(Zone 6b)

Portsmouth, OH is having River Days.
Winchester, Ohio is having Caramel Days....YUM!

Raining steady for the last 3 hours here.
Rained all day up in Eaton at the Reunion.... but they SERIOUSLY needed it. The lawns looked like dried hay.

good morning
we have a very wealthy guy down the road from us. He irrigated his lawn, which is about 5-7 acres ! and he is the only one with a bright green lawn ! ROFLLLL
saw him out the other day mowing away. LOL he must really like a green lawn ! :)
did my beets .... eh not what i wanted. but MIL loves them.
didn't get my tomato's so i may be going today.
apple dumplings i ate the whole thing. with the help of Austin.
cool day today
need a new vacum and microwave
good day to you all

New Madison, OH(Zone 5a)

Good morning all! Happy Labor Day!
So sorry to hear about Joyce's mom...praying for all of them!
It's been a zoo here ..what with gkids overnight..plus their cousin...cookouts at son's...mmmmmmmm...the best homemade pork barbecue..yummy!! And then...garage sales in his town of Palestine..and back to some more of those today too! Then lunch at the firehouse there! I'm ready for a normal week now....lol.
Yes..everything is burnt up here too Ric. You didn't miss anything. A week ago..it still looked fairly decent...but not now. I give up till next year! Dave has watered n watered for me...it just wasn't enough.
Ok...have to go...he wants to get moving...as usual....lol.
Have a great day everyone!

Barberton, OH

Had about 3/4th on an inch of rain yesterday. About the right amount, things were getting dry. I got up and CLOSED the windows this AM. Cool enough that I might be comfortable wearing pants and long sleeved shirt to foil the skeeters.
Retirement for me; each day the same as the last and the next. I just have to work around others scheduled lives.
Think I'll end this until i get in a better mood.
Herman

got two new jap maple tree's
Lions Head and a Crimson queen.
can't wait for the fall color on the LH !
