The pic is of tropical hibiscus Kona Pink a double if not a triple Hibiscus.I thought we could use some tropical color to brighten the wintery weather we are all experiencing.
I look forward to some spirited conversation but as mother nature has decided to be nasty this year we will also be chatting about the weather and what we are growing

I don't remember who sent this to me to share but I thought it might cheer us up.

Dave

thank you for the intrest and welcome

I do understand having the "I don't wanna" stuff going on and can usually push through that. What I have now seems to be a combination of a cold and the flu. Endlessly running nose, sewats, dizziness, etc. It seems to be passing but I think it's like the poker phrase that you have to know when to hold em and when to fold em. I think it's the same thing Tony had and he was out for a day and a half and he rarely gives into such things.

Anyway, I'm starting to feel better and thinkby tomorrow I'll be able to go outside with risking "de agony of de feet" by fainting or falling.

On a cheerier note, this is the twenty-fifth aniversy of my quiting drinking, Maybe the cold came to remind me of how sick I'd be if I were still drinking. Actually, I'd be long dead In comparison, a cold isn't so bad.

Dave, that is a Lantana. Love the hummingbird.

I came in from the windy cold. Down to 65 a d really windy. Workers are still working on front bed. We are moving to side bed. They are coming back tomorrow and Friday.

Dave, I can tear out anything the community owns but the owners own and maintain their own landscape. But i have been known to drop by and drop a big hint. And if something is dying, then they get a letter.

I am going back outside. I will return later. PITA's friend. Sharon.

Tulsa, OK(Zone 6b)

Ok so I have it now. there are many different flavors of associations. a lot of them work and are good to be personally i don't like anyone trying to tell me what to do. but in the instance of something dieing I agree a friendly reminder is sometimes needed.

yes its lantana i just don't know where i got the pic from but i do know it was sent to me in an email so I thought I would share.

I was glad to be able to at least get out and look around at the nursery stock. I will be looking closer to the hosta's i have so i might get some ads ready for mid to late march for sales generating. as they say you have to make hay when the suns shining.

sharon i am impressed by how much you do for your comunity with the landscapers and all. I do know its very hard to keep up with and you have got to stay on top of everyone.

have a great evening everyone

Now that everyone's weather is improving...mine has left the spring-like temps for freezing cold and yes, snow! I suppose it is only just since we had a month and a half of nice sunny weather.

I am at the computer, but I am supposed to be sorting seeds. Yes, I did have them sorted, but now I have more seeds that came in from a swap which need to be filed as well as sorting out the ones to go into envelopes for another swap. I already mailed the ones who requested that I send them separately on Monday, but need to put those into envelopes that go into a "robin". Anyone here ever do anything like that before? This will be my last one for quite a while as I was on a Piggy Swap and a Tomato Seed Swap. Enough is enough! I need to get some in place and ready to start early now, so as soon as I finish my obligations I can get started on organizing them to get my "early starts" ready. I don't know how people do so many swaps and do their gardening and all the other necessities of life as well. I probably wouldn't even be doing this if my husband did not love to cook so much, as I would have to do that too! I am, however, doing laundry today too.

Y'all already know what snow looks like so I thought I would share my first spring flower bulb emerging...this was taken on Feb 11th...

I am up but drenched in sweat just from wallking from my bed to the computer - about eight feet. My nose is red and sore but not running constantly. I have a cough tht sounds like I might bring up a lung. However, I think I'll be fine tomorrow. At least well enough to get out and play with some plants.

I was so sick yesterday the dogs got short changed on dinner. With Tony's help they got their usually chicken, brown rice and eggs today.

Our temperature is 74 now. Beautiful day. I'm still too woozy to walk around but am definately on the mend.

Dave, the new link does not work for me. Help! JB

I am sick of cooking. Today I took that ham and made the spread, pea soup and I am tired.
All that grinding up and cooking off and cleaning up is a bunch of crap. I need to stop being the happy cooker. It took me all afternoon to get it all done and then I had to cook off chicken for Barney and grind it up and wash those dishes. No, I do not have a dishwasher. When I moved here I said I would not need one because I am not going to be cooking. What a joke that was. My daughter loves my cooking and when she has a late day at work she cons me into doing dinner. Which I do with love, but today was a mess because I had to take the jeep to the carwash and get a hair cut and did not get back to the house til nearly one p.m. Never did get my cuttings planted. So, Tomorrow is going to be greenhouse day. For Sure. It was warmer today because the wind was calmer. But, not much snow melted. I am amazed.
Going to have a drink of wine and some cheese. Ate lunch about three and I am not hungry for dinner yet. That will be a salad for sure.
I had a delivery today that I was so impressed with. I had ordered two "daisy" wreaths for the doors because I felt they wuld make it look like Spring. They came and they are beautiful I paid nearly $40 wholesale for them. They are just perfect. They look so real and straggly , like someone just picked them and put them in a circle. Made my day.
I put one on my daughters side and one on my side. Looks really nice.
Have a good evening everyone. Katie Honey, are you up??????JB

My SIL is outside with the front end loader moving the snow pile so it melts tomorrow when the temp goes up to 60 deg. If it goes that high. Nite.

You're welcome JB. (giggle) PITA

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Katie, if nothing else, bundle up and go out and sit in the sun. The fresh air will do you good. Take an antihistamine so you don't snot so much.

As my mom used to say, "to blow some of the stink off of you". The fresh air that is.

Las Vegas, NV(Zone 9a)

well, I am inside and my shoulder and the front of my legs are in pain, but it is a good pain. I took a picture of the helpers for you today. I also took a photo of the pile of garbage that came out of the bed. This morning I decided for them to dig it down 2' and about 1 1/2' down they ran into total desert rock.

At about 1pm they moved to the back side yard bed by the pool and dug up all the cannas, irises, day lilies and white rain lilies that were in that location.. If it does not rain tomorrow, they are going to dig up some fig trees roots that are invading the irises and daylily area. And after that they are going to double dig my vegetable garden area and also dig up some hardy hibiscus and the black bamboo. When this is done I am going to celebrate. I think I will turn up the water heater and fill up my footed tub and take a long soak in bath salts. .

We have a major storm coming down from the Pacific Northwest. So I will have plenty of time to catch up on Vern's ironing and clean out the boxes on the dining room table. I also need to clean the plants that were dug up so they can be shipped.

Looks like PITA is getting the same storm we are but is going to get hit big time.

I will check in later. Have a great evening and a great morning tomorrow. Sharon.

Sharon, where's your whip??? Those guys are just standing there! How dare they just stand there to have their picture taken!!

Have no idea what storm you are talking about. We aren't having any storm. Where do you get your information?

Maybe from Seattle area? Don't know.

Las Vegas, NV(Zone 9a)

Oh I am sorry, I thought you were PITA of the entire state of Washington.

Sharon - That's what our "soil" looks like. Aboput half rock. We sift it and use the rocks for paths.

It's almost 6am and I'm up. Much better. Still stuffy but my nose isn't runnig constantly so I was able to get some sleep. For some reason antihistimines didn't seem to hellp but this bug seems to have almost run its course. I just don't bounce back the way I used to.

I will be going up to Ca. soon, maybe towards the end of next week. It's a 600 mile trip on Mexican roads and It's always tiring even though I'm able to take my time. I have to get some medical tests done and see my doctor.

Our weather is evening out some. This morning is not very cold. I don't need the propane heater on - just a flannal nightgown and a warm bathrobe. This is our usually our best weather so I am enjoying it as best I can..

Still lots of work to do to finish brownbagging the last kitchen wall and the second bedroom. Since I live here and have lots of stuff all the work involves moving things around and losing any sense of organization. We are gradually moving forward.

A lot of my seedling goldenberries seem to have bit the dust. They are still too small to prick out so I'm just watching them. Still only one arhat but with seeds from Horizon Herbs I often only get one or two plants. I'm not real good at starting seeds but I do keep trying. I have one baby Hawiian woodrose from a pcaket of seeds from Horizon. Only one seed made it but it's a huge, beautiful plant. It has a couple of flower buds that have been haninging one for a couple of months waiting for the weather to warm up.

I came to Mexico after liberating my mother from a nursing home where she had been dumped by my sisters and some crooked lawyers. It was in the mid-90's and I think I am still recovering from it. It was an awful situation. I have no regrets about what I did but I sometimes feel that with the demands I made on myself in that situation I used up a lot of my emotional and physical resources. I jsut don't have it in me to push through things like a cold. I saved my mother from an abusive situation and she was able to recover a lot and have a few happy months before she died peacefully with me sitting beside her. My sisters and the lawyers completely their "job" of cheating me out of about half a million dollars. That's how I got to Mexico.

Time to get to work.

hugs, katie

Wrightstown, NJ(Zone 7a)

Good for you Katie.. You are stronger than you think so keep on truckin Girlfriend. We are all here for each other and boy what a group. How in hell did we all manage to find each other. I am so thankful for each and every one of you. I adore you all and wish I lived in the West because I swear I would come and live with each one of you for a month at a time. Bring my dog and birds and make you absolutely crazy. Then move on. LOL.

But, the best I can do is hang out here and just try and irritate you all I can by writing and bitching, etc.

Jen, I see I have not been censored yet, so maybe Terry and Melody have quit and now we can talk the way we used to. Not that I care, we do not need to use bad language unless the situation warrants it. I nearly lost it this winter. I have a few choice words that would crash their computers if I said them. Oh well, so be it.

Must go into town with my neighbor. She needs sheep feed and I need a coke. Talk later. JB Yes, I have plenty of work to do but I do not feel like doing it. So there.
The sun is supposed to be out and it is not. It is to be warm and it is chilly. So, I am rebelling and doing nothing constructive.

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

I wish you lived in the west too JB. Maybe it would toughen you up a bit so you would quit your whining.

See Katie, JB has days that she does nothing too, but she does it with style. She goes to town with her neighbor for a coke.

And Sharon, for your satisfaction. we got 3 inches of snow last night. Is this the big "storm" you were talking about? All this is going to do is add to the mud the driveway is getting down to.

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Just got the cat off of me. So, now I can type. She has found the best place in the house to sleep is on my shoulder when I am on the computer. Right on the front of me. So, I type with one finger when she is here.

LOL, now let me see, what was I going to say? OMG, she must have squashed my brain. I can't remember.

The only thing that comes thru is PITA. Wonder what that is.

Oh yeah, Lee, how is that Storm doing? Is she down to the dirt yet? Or is the snow still so deep that she is digging it up? Have you decided what you are going to plant this year? Are you going to wintersow anything? I can't even get excited about planting yet when I look out and all I see is white. Still.

Well, JB, those plants I ordered, tropicals, have to take the long way around. The tracking has them coming on the 22nd. It wasn't enough that he didn't send them priority, but there is no mail on Monday. Can you believe this guy? Have you looked at his stuff? He has tons of things on there and obviously has no clue about mailing plants. He said he had to send out 22 plants on Monday. Why he put on so many at the same time is beyond me.

And why I bought any is even more of a mystery.

Wrightstown, NJ(Zone 7a)

I am back and I did not go into town. She called when I was in the GH and said she was ready and I was not finished planting so I said go without me. See Smart A ........I am working today. So there.

I did an inventory after I planted of what survived the winter of cuttings I had planted in the summer and I am delighted I have what I have. I am in good shape to start the selling by March 1st at least if the weather permits shipping. Otherwise I will hold off until the 15th. I could ship on a day like today if it would not drop to below freezing at night. Those plants sit in a cold truck and will freeze or if not actually freeze they will shut down and some will die.
Jen, why in bloody heck did you buy tropicals now. Logees is not shipping for the past few weeks to NJ. I bought stuff weeks ago and it will not be shipped until they feel safe to do it. It only takes two days and they will still not take a chance because of the night temps.

My dear young neighbors who have the greenhouse and country market stand just called to ask me to lunch next week. That is so cool. I may actually live through this winter now that people are back from the winter vacations and are planting again. I love those kids. They are young and full of ideas and energy. It wears off when you are with people like that instead of sitting around with a bunch of half dead old people.

I am going to work on the Market Place and get things listed so I am ready to go March.
Give me the name of this Wonder Man you bought from Jen, I want to see what he has.
If you have listed it before point me to it. Thanks.

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Don't run off smart A--. He held it for 2 weeks for me and I think it would have been fine sending it now (them) if he had sent them priority. I will the info in a dmail

Had to go get my fern and ginger out of the shower. I have had them in there for about 5 minutes, then will leave them in there with the shower doors closed so they get the humidity. They really like that. Yes JB, they told me so.

Years ago I used to gather up all my houseplants and put them in the shower for 5 minutes once a week. Cripes they did good. Don't have the get up and go now.

That is nice that the young people think of you JB. LOL, Bet they learn a lot from you tho.

Do you have an Aimee to send me? I am going to send you some money via Paypal for one.

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

The guys name is Duncanju. Don't know why he put up so many and this time of year.

Wrightstown, NJ(Zone 7a)

Jen, I have 12 Aimees in 6" pots and 37 in 3" pots. Just Dmail me what you want and when the time is right I will send it. I am very serious about shipping just now.
If the shipping is even priority, they sit in an truck or warehouse overnight and if the temp goes to freezing or below they can die. Then the customer blames the shipper. In your case, I would be darn sure they grow and if they do not look good after a few days I would notify PayPal and put in a claim against him. If you paid by paypal that is. What a jerk to ship now. Depending on his location it may work for you, but I would not do it.

Wrightstown, NJ(Zone 7a)

Jen, this dude has The Silent Seed listed under his name as his business. I clicked on it and this is what I found. He is in Mass and sent everything across country. Read the negative comment that he has. He has no positive. If this is the same person. I could be wrong. I will look again.

Good afternoon everyone:

i doubt even paypal would refund money on a perishable. thats why the postal service does not insure plant material.

Sharon I love manual labor ... I could sit and watch it all day ....lol I crack my self up .... he he

I managed to get outside and do a couple of hours of work boy I am worn to a frazzel. I did notice I have 25 McCay's Giant columnbine sprouted from last fall's late planting. I soaked asome DL seeds as wel as some other stuff

Anyone ever open an iris seed pod??? i di it was tough to get into and when it did crack it was like a skeet shooting range. the seeds stack on top of each other like casino chips and like to fly across the room. there was like 88 seeds in one pod. I have them soaking in my magic mix I like to use... same as last year.
I did get out and run some of the mix along with some foliar feed through the greenhouse. Its almost full wall to wall and 3 shelves high oh i guess it 2 if you dont count the floor as the 1st shelf. I have a nice tray of lavenar growing also. i managed to get some seed from my inlaws when we went out to visit them last summer
Well I managed to soak the following
Day lilies
smow on the mountain
dark red holly hocks
big blue hosta
hardy hibiscus - red - pink- white and a mix
yellow iris
I am sure I missed a few but i also got the following planted
white swan echinacea
Phlox drumondii a mix as well as a red
Polar star mum

well I am sure there is more but it escapes me at the moment.

Jeanette : did you pay the guy via a credit card??? if so dispute the charge as not getting what you paid for "priority shipping". you might get a claim on paypal on that but as far as survivability goes not really likely.

You know I hear about winter sowing but i never really got the whole process. i sow a lot of seed in the late winter but its in flats and in the greenhouse. I am sure JB will agree no mater how much greenhouse space you have you always want more. I think when it comes time to plant the new shed and greenhouse I will do a much bigger one and attach it to the shed so I will have a good and tight grrenhouse with access I wont worry about during the colder periods. I am considering using a roll up wall on the est end of the new house.of course it will have to be 6' 6" tall so that walking through it wont be an issue.

well last but not least we are suposed to have the same weather for the next week with a splash of a chance of rain but mostly upper 60's and 70's..... I still don't think winter is quite done with us though. I wish I had more enclosed growing space i would sow more seeds in there.

well have a great afternoon
Dave

Jen's buyer is not on Plant Scout I don't think, unless they are in under the name of the Company. I will be so anxious to see how the plants look. Off to rest and have some wine.
Have a good evening everyone and remember I lub u.

Thumbnail by Pughbear7
Tulsa, OK(Zone 6b)

the way the second one is clumping i am thinking it might be interesting to see what shakes out with it.

mulege, Mexico

I don't know what they are but I like the second one. Nice color and form.

I got up and Worked today. I think I'll probably survive - barely. While Tony worked on brownbagging the kitchen wall, I cleared in the second bedroom and the big closet. Then I went down in the arroyo and discovered that the first of my yacon plants is poking up leaves. I planted the rest of the tubers.

I put a promagranite tree about half-way down the arroyo and it is growing well. They can get huge here so I had to be careful where I put it.

I have a running bamboo that I got from Horizon Herbs. Need to be very careful where it goes.

Tony and I are going to Santa Rosalia tomorrow. I have to renew my immigration papers with the nasty immigration man. Tony has to do something about his new propane business. I showed him the Marey tankless water heater on eBay. It looks perfect for here. Doesn't need electricity and you can leave it be for eight months of the year . Even when I had a tanked water heater I didn't use it from one year to the next. Too much hassle. But a hot shower during the winter here would be very nice.

The dogs are reminding me that it is dinner time for them. I'm having pea soup that I made the other day - guess it's that time of year.

Have a good evening, everyone.

hugs, katie

Wrightstown, NJ(Zone 7a)

Oh Katie, I am so glad you are feeling better. My daughter and SIL both have sinus infections for the past two weeks. Nothing seems to help and the mucus is a mess. They are still plugging away but neither of them feel up to snuff.
It may take you some time to get completely better, so do not overdo it. You are doing so well just being up and about. Sounds like you are even getting some things done. Good Girl. You are wonderful.

Pea soup, blah, I still smell it cooking . It took three hours for the darn peas to get soft and I soaked them overnight. I hate making pea soup for that very reason.

I cut black pussy willows today. They are filled with little black catkins, not as many as last year, but they are alive. I put a handful of them in water to see if they will root. Does anyone have any of the ones I sent out that grew or did they all die? I was able to get three new bushes from last years and I hope they survived the snow.

I am going to watch NCIS now. Love you all. Have a good evening.

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

I did pay thru paypal but don't think they try to help you unless it is thru their parent company of ebay.

I looked on Watchdog, but only under the selling name. Will try the other.

Dave, regarding your plants. The first one might be a poppy? Only thing I thought it might look like. The second one, I definitely pull as weeds.

Dave, would love to see pictures of your plants in your greenhouse.

Lee, where are you? Haven't heard a thing from you.

Bob and I are thinking of getting a big TV. Do any of you have any suggestions? Don't know if I can take any more tho. LOL I have been doing a lot of research on the computer and we are going to Spokane next week since I have a dr. appt. and we will look there.

Sierra Foothills, CA(Zone 8a)

Hello, everyone! I am glad everyone is feeling better! I am too, especially since I have been on antibiotics for a week, after the relapse of the gum infection.

I am glad that everyone's weather is improving now, so I will try not to complain too much as we had a month and a half of nice weather. It has been snowing steadily all day long and overnight as well, at times rather blustery but still nothing like you have it on the northeastern part of the country. (Or, in Jeanette's case, northwestern part...)

I have been busy today keeping up with all the cleaning and laundry as we have been getting power outages and I just lost a long post to you all and can't remember everything...LOL!! This time I put the battery in it, as at home I usually use the laptop without the battery since it doesn't last that long anyway.

I have also been busy with the seeds, sorting out which ones to put in envelopes for the round robin seed swap. No more of these this year, as I have not started anything except the peas and lettuce which is under the snow right now. Also I planted a few nursery starts of broccoli.

Oh, Oh! Lost power...'bye!

mulege, Mexico

Here's a tip for the split pea soup: get the freshest dried peas you can find. Do not soak them. Bring a couple of quarts of water to a boil. Drop the peas in a handful at a time so the water doesn't stop boiling. When all the peas are in and boiling lower heat to a simmer. They will get soft in about half an hour.

I'm still sniffing but I'm definately getting better. Glad I took the two days off as I would have been useless and probably have fallen down the arroyo. Bump, bump, bump.

kb

Rosamond, CA(Zone 8b)

Katie you sent me cyber cold/flu. I am dieing too.

Sharon you work horse, looks like you're accomplishing much.

mulege, Mexico

It just feels like you're dying. But a runny nose is rarely fatal although after two days you may wish it was. Get yourself a big box of soft tissues and go to bed. Ignore anyone who tells you to get up and get to work. Administer chicken soup as desired. See you in about three days.

hugs, katie

Las Vegas, NV(Zone 9a)

PITA, I am so glad you got some snow to help make your mud.

My workers were here another 8 hours gain today and will be back tomorrow. Was suppose to be a crappy day and it was actually beautiful. I got some plants moved and some beds refurbished to plant some of the plants in the garage. I will wait another week. They started on the bed by thee master bedroom and the pool. Again we found the roots from the fig tree. It has blocked off the irrigation system in three different areas. I would say they have 1/5 of the bed done. But it does get more narrow the closer the bed gets to the pool.

Of course, I gave them explicit rules on which cannas went in which box. The one that speaks English even repeated it back to me. Well, no such luck.

Dave, I am going to send you a couple of those really long stemmed day lilies, if you want them. They may only be long stemmed because they were behind the tall cannas.

I moved about 12 irises that I moved from my old home. I put them in a corner and they never died but they never grew. Been in that spot for 10 years. Now they are in the sun and in great soil and not fighting tree roots. We shall see.

So Katie, if you got screwed out of your inheritance, how do you live.

JB, anyone with the sniffles or sinus problems, they need to use the flush out system that washes the nostrils with a saline and soda solution. It has a bottle that you fill with warm water and a packet of the dry ingredients and in about two days they are back to normal. Anytime you feel even slightly stuffy, you use it. I am an ex-sinus sufferer and I swear by it. I got mine at Costco but I am sure you can find it at Walmart or any larger pharmacy. But it will be cheaper at Sam's Club or Costco.

Well, my body aches all over. To much fun gardening. But I have a big smile on my face. Later friends. Probably early afternoon.

Las Vegas, NV(Zone 9a)

Cross Post. Yes I am a work horse. Always have been and always will be until I cannot. But you must remember my father. You do not quit when you are tired, you quit when you are done. Funny think, my two brothers and I learned that but my younger sister, the youngest has no clue.

Dawn, sorry you are sick. Living in the desert you know how to keep your sinuses healthy.

Later, Sharon.

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Yeah, my sister went to Spokane today and said they ran into a blizzard of snow. LOL, they didn't have any so they could use it.

Gotta take the cat to the vet in the morning to have her teeth cleaned and her nails clipped. She has a whole bunch of toes on each foot. More than she is suppose to. She has been licking the one foot and wouldn't let me touch it. Well, I got a pretty good look at it and the nail has grown into her toe.

It's an all day trip. 'till she wakes up anyway.

Wrightstown, NJ(Zone 7a)

Here in the USA I am stuck with Goya Dried Peas. Never ever soaked them in the past, but who knows where these came from and how long they were here. You are right Katie. I should have just kept my mouth shut regarding telling you to get up. I apologize and I will not do it again. JB

Tulsa, OK(Zone 6b)

good morning and yes I am up with the chickens 5 am to be exact. i figuired I had a tough time sleeping last night so i will get up and see what the day has to hold in store for me. I am planning on redoing my cold frame so I can put my DL's out as well as the other stuff thats soaking.

Jeanette: yes tv advise LED 120 mhz 1080 or higher. I did not like the new 3d tv the glasses are too cumbersome and I am afraid it would be like some of the other fads just sit by the way side and die a slow death. we have a 47" lcd in the bedroom and are looking at the 60 to 65" led's. I would definately go into best buy and sit down in there tv room. nothing beats watching different tv's side by side to make up the mind. thats how I decided the 3d was a non starter for me. we bought our tv in the bedroom 2 years ago and really love it. might be why i have a tough time getting out of bed??? naa. I do sit down on the side of the bed a lot to watch tv in the BDrm. we have talked about putting in a couple of chairs as a sitting area on my side of the bed.

Katie do you have the bad flu bug that was going around here last winter. the darn thing would not die. I swear I was fine for a few days and then back it came even after antibiotics. Its a tough one to shake.

the nettie pot sounds like pure torture and black magic..

Jeanette your post on the cats toes looks a bit odd to me...of course "she has a whole bunch of toes on each foot"

almost sounds like when kim called the vet to check on the cost of declawing the cat. they asked 2ft or 4 ft? kim said it sounded like a big cat 4'...lol I will never let that one die...

well its time to get moving. I am sure I will die about 2 ish just in time for nap30...lol
Have a great day

Morning Dave, I was going to dmail you. Did you want black pussy willows this year? If so I want to be sure they are cut and rooted and I will ship them in the gel if they root properly.
You decide and if you want to give it a shot again, let me know. I thought you said yours died. Thanks. JB
