CLOSED: Thanks for the Peppers & Tomatoes, Heather!

Everett, WA(Zone 8a)

Anyone in Heather's Tomato + Pepper Exchnage is invited to post a list of what they recieved,
or comments, or anything else, in this thread.

Here is a list of the totally awesome variety of seeds I recently received
from Heather's 3rd Annual Tomato & Pepper Seed Exchange.

Manitoba, Morden Yellow and Sophies choice are all Canadian tomato cultivars.
They were bred for colder climates. There is an agricultural research station at Morden, Manitoba.
The Sopies Choice one was developed near Edmonton, Alberta.

Jaunne Flambe has a high carotene content.

Liberty Hill, TX(Zone 8a)

Thanks for posting I love seeing the different varieties.

Bordentown, NJ(Zone 7a)

Micro Tom is so tiny you can plant it in a 4-6" pot and grow it as a houseplant. (now!)

Everett, WA(Zone 8a)

CLScott,

Thanks for the info about "for cooler climate". That moves Manitoba & Morden Yellow much higher on my list, and means I should look for Sophies Choice.

Does anyone know varieties that are more vulnerable to slugs, or more resistant?

Corey

Liberty Hill, TX(Zone 8a)

No such thing

Everett, WA(Zone 8a)

Oh, well, at least that reduces the variables!

Corey

Sierra Foothills, CA(Zone 8a)

Any of you growing peppers ~ I found a website that gives the fine details of growing peppers.
http://www.ecoseeds.com/Pepper.growing.tips.html

I hope that this is helpful.

Evelyn

(Ang) Bremerton, WA(Zone 8b)

CajunKY, will you let me know how Banana Legs does for you?

Biggs, KY(Zone 6a)

I sure will Tiki. I will be posting a lot about my gardening as I will be new to SFG.

I can grow me a tomato inside NOW?!!!

Calgary, Canada

Slugs don't like copper metal.
I toss a few copper pennies near them, or a bit of copper wire etc.

(Ang) Bremerton, WA(Zone 8b)

I've never heard of the copper thing before but I have heard of using coffee grounds. I make a ring around my containers and there goes my slug issues.

Biggs, KY(Zone 6a)

I put out saucers of beer for slugs.

Liberty Hill, TX(Zone 8a)

I'm going to have to try that. We have always had Fireants that took care of the snails and slugs. For some reason the Fireants have gone away, but now I have snails and slugs for the first time in all the 18 years I've been out here. I haven't even seen one since I moved here from CA.

Biggs, KY(Zone 6a)

Fire ants are something I do not miss!

Virginia Beach, VA(Zone 7b)

My seeds from heather were mailed today. It will probably take 10 business
days to get them. So that means Christmas eve or after Christmas. It would
be cool to get them Christmas eve. Nice selection of tomatoes Cajun. I will
be willing to trade with you when I get my seeds. I do have Mini Orange cherry
tomato, it's mild. Are you really a Cajun? You know I was born in Louisianna,
but raised in California, and now live in Virginia. I have Cajun blood from my
dad.. .. Will post my list when I get my seeds. Will be some tomatoes but mostly
peppers.

Linda

Virginia Beach, VA(Zone 7b)

Opps. It's corey that wants to trade, maybe. Corey, I'll post my list
when I get my seeds. I do have the mini orange cherry tomato.

Linda

Biggs, KY(Zone 6a)

Yes, Linda. Born and raised on the bayou. And I do miss the food. LOL
Where in Louisiana are you from? I was actually born on the north shore of Lake Ponchatrain but moved down the bayou to Dulac and I call it home. I miss it more and more.

I have a bunch of tomato seeds I want to trade. I am looking for some odd bush beans and a few other things. I will have to downsize to SFG in the Spring so I need to conserve room. But I am looking for a few special melons also. I need to start my thread.

Everett, WA(Zone 8a)

Linda,

Sure, hoepfully we'll wnat different things. The more I research, the more I realize that Heather knows more about tomatoes than was ever written on a seed packet!

Some are earlier than DG Plant files suggests, and far more were bred for cool climate than I knew. Canadian, Russian, "Sub Arctic".

One neighbor that told me she had no toruble getting tomatoes to ripen in our climate last weekend added "of course, i buy plants when they're THIS tall" and indicated something like 2 feet. That sets the bar even higher than I thought!

I've been reading a very polite thread over in heirloom vegetables, where people discuss their favorite tomatoes. Everyone thinks their baby is the cutest baby, but they all seem able to get along. One heretic claimed that hybrids were so good, there was no NEED for heirlooms. They didn't even lynch him!

I think a LOT depends on climate and soil ... and palate. Reviews in Plant Files are wildly contradictory, which I suppose makes sense.

Zinniared,

I thought I was losing my mind there for a minute. I don't have you registered in this swap :) I suppose you registered in another forum under another member name? Please tell me I'm not losing my mind...it's been a long cold winter and I'm afraid my brain cells have frozen along with my toes.

BTW...my hot peppers are doing beautifully on my window sill in the kitchen. Who would have guessed Peter Peppers would enjoy it a little on the cooler side :) I always like to think of hot peppers and spicy food in the middle of winter. Reminds me of warmer days to come.

Corey...I can relate to your growing dilemmas. People in Toronto still don't believe me that I grow Tomatoes and Hot Peppers in Calgary. I had to send them pictures to prove it.

Biggs, KY(Zone 6a)

Heather, do you go to the Stampede?

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

Once in a while, but not as often as I used to. Usually only when visitors...business or personal come to town. I do like to enjoy the stampede parties that go on around the city during that 10 days. I find there's plenty of stampede activity around the city, without actually going to the stampede grounds.

It is great for tourists, but I grew up here and lived here most of my life...so I try to vary what I do during stampede every year.

If you haven't been, you should go sometime. It is a lot of fun, lots of festivities....tonnes of free musics (outdoor bands), and on and on. Tourists love the free stampede breakfasts that go on around the city each day as well. Never a dull moment.

Biggs, KY(Zone 6a)

It has always been a dream of mine but I doubt it will ever happen. I watch it on TV. I never thought of all the stuff that would be going on in town. Free breakfast sounds great! LOL

Heather, I am roper2008. When I signed on to Dave's garden I
thought you had to have different user name for different forums.
On most of the other forums I'm roper2008.

Cajuninkentucky. I was born in New Orleans, but we left when I
was 2 years old. So I don't remember it. This was back in the
late 60's.

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

Hi Carolyn,

I know the handwriting on a few of the packs was very hard to read. One of your sweet peppers was actually "corno de toros" or also known just as "corno di toro" most of the time. The other one should read "Jimmy Nardello's".

Thought you'd like to know the correct spelling in case you do seed saving on these later.

Thanks...Heather

Carmel, NY(Zone 6b)

I don't think there's really a tomato named Tomatofest, that would be the supplier. Is there another name on the envelope?

Sierra Foothills, CA(Zone 8a)

Sequee ~ That was the only name on the envelope. I agree with you, but maybe someone will tell me what tomato they got at the Tomatofest. (Possibly, they did not know...)
