I know you did not ask for this...but I cannot mention my town without saying...
I am only moments from The Old Mill which is featured in the opening scenes of Gone With The Wind. Being the only standing structure that remains from the movie, the commemorative stamp was unveiled at this site in 1989. There are over 200 weddings performed here every year and is a very popular setting for prom, school, etc, pictures. Admission is free (free for weddings, too) and is open from dawn 'til dusk everyday. You can choose to tour at your own pace or have a tour docent (like me) guide you. The grounds and gardens are managed by The City of NLR, Friends of the Old Mill and Pulaski County Master Gardeners.
The park is decorated with sculptures of toadstools, tree stumps, and a tree branch-entwined bridges that connect the mill to the rest of the park. Senor Dionico Rodriguez, a sculptor and artist from Mexico City, was responsible for all the details of each piece of concrete work made to represent wood, iron or stone, as well as the designing of the foot bridges and rustic seats. He was so secretive about how he made these designs that he would mix the concrete in the trunk of his car and would close the deck lid if anyone approached. When the day was done, he would throw away the mixture buckets in an undisclosed location.
The Old Mill was nationally recognized in 1986 by being placed on the National Register of Historic Places.
