It's Seed Ordering Time...what have YOU purchased?

Headed over there, also.

I'm also very interested in your GH. The DH purchased me a 12X7X7 for Christmas, so I want to figure out how early I can start seeds for zone 8B in it.

If you are growing tomatoes, they always say to start them 6-8 weeks before the last frost or the date you wish to set them out in the garden. For our plant sale, we use 7 weeks and that seems to work well. Sounds like you got a nice sized greenhouse to grow in. I think your extension services can give the last frost date for your area. Nancy

Thanks Nancy! :-)

Here is what I have to plant this year. I don't have a lot of space for tomatoes so hope this is a better year than last year for them.
Tomato 'Black Cherry'
Tomato 'Black Sea Man'
Tomato 'Fresh Salsa'
Tomato 'Marion'
Tomato 'Mexico'
Tomato 'Mortgage Lifter'
Tomato Rainbow Blend: Sundrop (orange), Gold Nugget (yellow), Brown Cherry (brown),
Sweetie (red), Green Grape (green), Snow White (creamy white) & Bicolor Cherry
(pink/white striped). From Big Dipper

silver spring, MD(Zone 7a)

My seeds from Baker Creek came in last night

Black Krim
Paul Robeson
Jersey Giant
Tanaase es Canares
Sub-Arctic Plenty
Star of David okra
Dragon Tongue Beans
Corne De Belier peas
De Grace Snow Peas
Alaska Peas
Jimmy Narello Peppers
Shishito Pepper
Wando Peas
Rosa Bianca Eggplants
Ping Tung Eggplants
Ma-Zu Eggplants
Golden Marconi Pepper
Tai White Ribbed Eggplant
Blue Lake Bush Beans

And lots of greens and onions. I think I over bought. Everything is going in EB's. I'm making them myself. Home Depot is having a big sale on the containers. We just moved into our new house and the previous owners never did anything with the yard. As well, everyone's yard drains into ours and I don't want all their pesticides etc. leaching into my veggies. I can't wait for the gardening season to begin!!! We're going on vacation this week, but as soon as we get back, we're going to start our seeds.

I thought I was done, but thanks to Carolyns post, I found 11 new ones yesterday that I ordered. I could just sit and read about those tomaotes all day....and did ;-o

I wanted the green grape, but you had to order a larger amount, for one plant I didnt do it, almost with I had.

gardenglory, would you trade a few of your Giant Belgium seeds for a few Green Grape seeds? I can give you five (half of what I have).

Gainesville, FL(Zone 9a)

O yes...and I will send you a list of the 11 I have coming, in case there are some of those you want as well. Altho I just ordered them yesterday, I have a feeling they will be here quick.

****

I couldn't understand what you meant until I went to the site and found out that they're out of pack amounts for that variety already.

Please e-mail me at cmale@aol.com with your address b/c I never remember to look at my DG mail until usually notified something is there, and I'll send you a few seeds of Green Doctors which I think is a much better green when ripe cherry than is Green Grape and many others would agree.

And part of this is guilt b/c I goofed when sending seeds of Green Doctors last Spring and it if weren't for that Adam would be listing Green Doctors as well. Many of us at Tville sent him varieties, concentrating on the hard to find ones, but other popular ones as well.

I'm sorry but this is NOT a genera offer folks. Right now I'm dealing with my own free seed offer elsewhere, now closed, and have about 350 seed packs to do and return in the SASE's sent to me.

And this when the Australian Tennis Open starts on Monday for I'm a big fan of tennis and watch all that I can. LOL

Garden Glory said in her post above she didn't get the Green Grape seeds and explained why,

And then I said I'd send her Green Doctors, which is better than Green Grape, but I also said it wasn't a general offer so I'm going to send her just a few seeds b'c she said she wanted just one plant.

Carolyn

Mine came really quick. Is there something else from my list above that I can send you. The only ones that I am limited on are the Rainbow mix (very small amount of each kind, just one pkt with color coded seeds).
I love the Gleckler Seed sight, thanks for posting it.

Carolyn, I haven't been following this,or any, thread for a while. To answer your question, I am trying to please my neighbors in this area where we have such a short growing season. I start at least 300 tomatoes a year and give most of them away.

I'm getting meaner in my old age and I will not do that anymore. If they want those Hybrids I mentioned they can go downtown and buy them. I will only be planting heirlooms that are not readily available here. Believe me, there aren't many.

However, I will plant BHN 589 because in my garden, which may be vastly different than anyone else's, it tastes the best. I don't know why. I consider it a blessing! It is the only hybrid I will be offering this year. Excuse me, I forgot the 100+ Sungolds I will be plant

It KILLS me to hear someone say they like Early Girl and Celebrity. I've had to control myself not to yell: "Good grief, do you have any taste?"

I did conduct a taste test last August with a small number of friends. I gave each one a taste of Brandywine Sudduth's and one knot head said, "Oh, that's the best. Is it a Celebrity?" I nearly died.

Moss Point, MS(Zone 8b)

Ray I see enough extras in that tray that you could separate them and make up 4 more trays. I'd be tempted. May God help us all.

Virginia Beach, VA(Zone 7b)

Ray- Der-Phan, I haven't started any tomatoes or peppers yet.
All my trays are in the Sunroom. I was looking at them yesterday,
and thought ' I'm going to plant all that!'. I know I'll be giving some
plants away.

Auburn, AL(Zone 8a)

Starting seeds today...wayyy to many seeds wayyyy to few Earthboxes...

Winston-Salem, NC(Zone 7a)

Never realized we had a tomato forum at dg! yay!

I'm not in the position to buy any seeds this year but if I was the list would be very long. I have about 95% of the seeds offered in Seed Savers Exchange circled.

Liberty Hill, TX(Zone 8a)

Twiggy- when I read "May God help us all" I can't stop laughing. Its so nice to know that there are other "nuts" like me that truly love starting seeds.

twiggy, I did get a little generous with adding seeds to the pellets. I have 5 babies in some. Didn't expect to have such of a high germination rate. Just about all popped up by the 3rd day. If they separate easily, I will plant them. If not, the scissors are close at hand.

zinniared, yup, my neighbors and friends are gonna be getting lots of seedlings, whether they like it or not. I told myself last week, no more than 50 tomato plants. Today it's "no more than 60 tomato plants" :)

araness, I'm in the same boat. I have plenty of 10-15 gallon containers, but for me, they don't do near as well as SWCs. Will be ordering 5 or 6 more in a few weeks.

Virginia Beach, VA(Zone 7b)

Are SWC's earthboxes? Where do you order them from?

Oceanside, CA(Zone 10a)

Yeah, SWCs= Self Watering Containers which includes.....Garden Patch Boxes, Earthboxes, Tomato Success Kits, Earthtainers, etc...

Will probably get 3 more Garden Patch boxes and 3 more EBs.

I have all 3, as well, and particularly like the Garden Patch Boxes. They are less expensive, and I find that the wider lip allows rain water to get into the reservoir, thereby taking advantage of Ma Nature whenever possible. My best producers, though, seem to come from the 15 gallon tubs. Too expensive to keep alot of those, though, since they take so much more MG potting mix.

Oceanside, CA(Zone 10a)

Yup, I like the GPs the best as well. Cheaper and much easier to water. I don't use their fertilizer or cover though. I use EB's cover on them. Fits nice and tight.

Virginia Beach, VA(Zone 7b)

Thanks, I'm going to check it out.

SE Houston (Hobby), TX(Zone 9a)

And, don't forget the 5-gallon eBuckets! Less space AND less potting mix! One eBucket = 1 square foot of planting space.

Here's the link to the discussion of our latest design that incorporates an overturned colander to create the water reservoir. Veeeeeeeeeeeeery easy to make (if all your parts are ready, you can put one together in 3-5 minutes!), and approximately $1.60/per eBucket - $1.08 per colander @ Only a Dollar or Dollar Tree stores, and $.47/PVC tube, 20" long.

And look what you can do...

Last fall at Navy Exchange I bought an earthbox. They only had 1 and it
was 50% off, so I paid $15. The regular price was 29.99. On the side of
the box it has www.earthbox.com. A lot more than the Navy Exchange
offered it at regular price. I may wait to see if the Exchange will have some
this summer. Sometimes they will only have 1 or 2 of a certain item. If not
I can always buy it on the internet. Last year I spent a lot of time watering
my 5 gal buckets. Back and forth from the rain barrel to the buckets.

Virginia Beach, VA(Zone 7b)

Wow, Gymgirl I have to check that out too. Thanks

I just use potting soil bags as covers. They are just the right size to go to the edges, and the price is right!

Auburn, AL(Zone 8a)

How are they cheaper? Both are 29.95, does it take less mix? I'd like to try one but if they are the same $$ I'd prob stick to EB's...cause well backyard looks bad enough without a million different types of containers...although not sure how it can distract from that big wood goal post we built to provide support for the tomatoes...

Virginia Beach, VA(Zone 7b)

The earthboxes are 54.95. Garden Patch is 29.99. The earthboxes
look bigger to me. I'm thinking maybe I can squeeze 3 peppers in the
earthbox.

ZinniaRed,
Save yourself some steps. Hook up an automatic drip system on a timer and water all your eBuckets automatically!

Bocabob has given us detailed instructions for hooking up a drip system where you run lines from the main hose into each container and set the timer. I still need to hook mine up, but the components can be purchased at HD or Lowes. I have a 6-cycle timer for mine.

The first link is the discussion thread with detailed photos that Bob posted.
The second link is an EZ sheet of the components and instructions that DGer Araness so lovingly compiled for those who are not "instructionally" challenged -- like I, who need those pictures to make sure I'm buying the right stuff!

Bob put one together at a DGer's home. It took 1/2 to install. Per Bob, the system can link up to 45 different drip sites! How cool is that?

If you buy just the basic Earthbox without the fertilizer and soil it is $29.95. The price drops when you order in quantity.I usually order 3 at a time but the price drop is no longer that big. I don 't know if the dimensions are significantly different as I have only used EB's but am tempted to try the Garden Patch just to see. Here is the link to the basic ones at Eathbox.com:

3 GP's will cost $105 (S & H included)

3 EB's will cost $110.10 (S & H included)

Not as much of a savings as I thought. Only saving $5.10.

Here is an old thread comparing the SWCs if anybody is interested.

Actually GP's are bigger(wider) and have a 4 gallon reservoir. EB's have a 3 gallon reservoir. You can grow 6 peppers in each box easily.

Auburn, AL(Zone 8a)

that's an Earthbox with mix, does the Garden Patch come with mix?

I put 6 peppers per EB

Not quite sure since I don't order either with mix. 3 ready to grow EB kits will cost $206.70. Yikes! Almost $50 in S & H.

Sequee,
Great tip on recycling those soil bags as EB covers!

Twiggybuds,
You're very kind. I've got a looooooooooooooong way to go before I consider myself a specialist in the garden at anything except how to keep the worms happy!

Yep -- I've got worms!
